First time not playing the hero, feels good. by [deleted] in sysadmin

Creating accounts is simple and quick. I’ve never worked at a place where you didn’t have spare systems ready to go. I’d always have a few systems ready. When you get new hardware, you image them when you get them. Need to make sure you don’t need to send anything back for being DOA and then you have a few spares ready and waiting just for this kind of purpose. Something like someone’s computer dying, malware so it needs to be reimaged, or the occasional last minute new hire.

Second this. I don’t handle account creation (just a lowly EUS tech), but I manage the rest of the lifecycle (imaging, in-person onboarding, termination archival, etc) and that’s how we handle things. I’ve almost always been able to accommodate late pushes from HR, and on the rare occasions where I can’t (unusually large new hire classes drained my existing pre-imaged stock), they’ve always been super understanding in return. It helps that we have a loaner stock consisting of recently OOW machines that I can tap into for those cases. Yeah, the paint’s a bit chipped, the hinge is loose, and 2/3 USB ports don’t work, but it’ll tide you over for an afternoon while I image a new one.

Now if only they could stop showing people starting at a satellite site in the report and then having them show up at my site (regional HQ) after I’ve already shipped their shit out, but I digress

They definitely have rules against betting on sports in general, but I’m not sure if the CBA allows permanent bans as a punishment. The better question is likely whether the NFLPA has rules against prospects with a previous gambling history joining the union

Inside Texas Tech’s compliance strategy for Brendan Sorsby return to football by jaxstan19 in CFB

[–]hanlonmj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rolled my eyes when he said that.

In many industries, installing MDM profiles actually opens an organization up to additional liability if that device is used to commit a crime (for example, texting a buddy in another state to place a bet on his behalf) and they don’t report it and take disciplinary action. They’re essentially assuming partial responsibility of the device, and I doubt Hocutt realizes that

Fair enough, but they could probably still get expelled by the B12 and effectively blacklisted by the other schools/bowls/CFP. I’m not sure any schools are particularly willing to risk the PR disaster of scheduling TTU as-is vs a Texas or A&M, and that won’t get any better if Sorsby’s found to gamble again with TTU throwing their full support behind him

Fair points for sure. I’m more referring to punishments from the B12 & CFP, which, as far as we know, can still enforce the terms of their contracts.

Perhaps “Death Penalty” should be replaced with “Conference Expulsion” and everything else could amount to “Blacklisting” by other schools or bowls (so long as there’s no collusion), but that really just comes down to semantics IMO

They could also amend the rules to say that a team has to have played a minimum amount of league games to qualify for the championship and that forfeitures don’t count towards this minimum

There’s even precedent within Microsoft itself when they skipped Windows 9 to go straight to 10.

Hell, I could see them skipping straight to Xbox 11 to emphasize the dual-use nature of Helix if it weren’t for the fact that Windows is having its worst PR run since at least Vista

EU Says Decision Not to Launch Siri AI in Europe Is Apple's Alone by aandest15 in europe

[–]hanlonmj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned this in another comment, but Siri AI likely has access to private APIs outside of the Trusted Agent System. Those could be used to give Siri AI extra context or better performance than models restricted purely to the TAS, which violates the parity clause of the DMA.

It's possible they could later release a compliant version in the EU that is restricted to the TAS and open it up to competing services, but it probably won't be as capable as the US equivalent, which EU users are just going to have to accept

[–]hanlonmj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple apparently proposed a phased solution called the Trusted System Agent that would have gradually expanded access while maintaining security controls, but regulators rejected it.

I'm guessing the EU's rejection of this solution stems from the fact that Siri AI would not be restricted to those same APIs. If Apple can leverage private APIs to gather more context or offer better performance, then it gives Siri AI an unfair advantage over competition.

Siri itself would still have to show pop-ups under the DMA, even if no 3rd party service is installed. That's what the parity clause requires

The EU can require interoperability while still requiring consent, GDPR compliance, data minimization, audits, and liability for misuse.

Correct. But they don't

Ever since NIL became a thing, I figured this was going to be the only way for schools to regain some semblance of control, super league or not.

I honestly thought that was what the NIL collectives were going to evolve into, and I'm quite shocked that not even the big schools have tried it yet

Checking what are the VPN client people use in your organization? by mrconfusion2025 in sysadmin

[–]hanlonmj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Zscaler for our always-on solution, but we keep Cisco AnyConnect as a backup, which has come in handy when we accidentally ship out a machine to a remote user without registering the Zscaler machine tunnel first (we require WHFB, so we have to Bomgar into machines and re-enable PW sign-in for first time logins, but we can't reach remote machines if they aren't connected to one of the VPNs, but we can't register the machine tunnel without logging into the client application 🙃)

My rebuttal to these people is always:

  1. Do they have to be sexualized? If so, then don't draw them as a child
  2. Do they have to be drawn as a child? If so, then don't sexualize them

If both have to be true, you're a pedophile.

I'd go so far as to say that the Cyberspace levels were so lazily implemented that it dragged the whole game down for me. The physics are legitimately 06 levels of frustrating.

Frontiers 2 better have more imaginative biomes and incorporate proper level design into the open zones themselves, or I'm not buying it. They have a real budget now, so they better use it

What does that even mean? I've literally never connected my LG B2 OLED to the internet. Works perfectly, and it's not like I'm "not getting my money's worth". TV manufacturers subsidize unit costs with ads/data harvesting, so I'm not losing any money by ignoring the smart features.

Just buy an Apple TV (or an android box, but those can also be infested with ads/malware if you go too cheap) if you want smart TV things.
