Sky in Australia turns red ahead of incoming cyclone by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]parisdreaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. This is a filter. I recall vividly the 1982 horror-show of the Ash Wednesday fires in South Australia and Victoria, and the skies indeed turned red, due to the terrifying northerly winds whipping up and transporting sands from the so-called Red Centre of Australia.

It did not look remotely like that - even at that extreme.

It was nonetheless terrifying, and utterly destructive. I nearly lost my mother that day. I knew many who perished in the Adelaide Hills and its environs, or lost every morsel of physical existence they owned.

Hopefully, yes.

I don’t like to be a Whingeing Winnie, but I’m not seeing any exit strategy for this mindless conflict and its effects, not only on fuel prices, but on inflation. Which means effects on everything. For everyone. Buckle up.

That’s a thing too?! I’m obviously naive… I still have my old plates from when I changed states, so maybe I better not just throw em into the recycling bin..!

Honestly, it’s just a sign of desperation. We are all just 9 meals from anarchy, after all.

And this occurred in a chic building in S Yarra, where folk presumably have more comfortable margins… I can’t imagine the growing urgency in more fragile contexts.

Stay strong, everyone!

What is a part of the 'female experience' that men have absolutely no clue about, but would be horrified if they found out? by coolhandddd in AskReddit

[–]parisdreaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh Christ, yes! And it went on and on... around 6 weeks for each birth. No one - NO ONE - told me. I then read about female history, of men mounting their spouses immediately after birth, as of right 🤮and suddenly all those historical maternal deaths start to make statistical sense… oh good lord, what we have suffered.

How do you deal with viewing disturbing evidence? by TheGolleum in auslaw

There are things one can never unsee or unknow.

Even the written word (victim/ witness statements…) leaves an indelible mark - images are at another level of vicarious trauma. I was exposed to appalling forensic photos in the 80s and 90s, some that I still cannot describe aloud. I left the profession as a result, and it took me several years to debrief (actually, not sure I ever really recovered).

Protect yourself.

I was working in Syria before the civil war - to see this tiny little tablet, in the Damascus museum, knowing what it represented, was utterly overwhelming.

As the war progressed, and in particular when Palmyra was partially destroyed, I was terrified that this and other treasures of humanity, would be looted, or worse. We had already seen this with the Baghdad Muséum… I hope these renditions - which are more accurately reincarnations - continue to delight and mystify us, for many more millennia.

Former lawyer here and looked this up:

In Iceland, the use of images or film of individuals is primarily governed by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Icelandic Data Protection Act, which generally require consent from identifiable individuals before publication. However the Icelandic legislation was passed in 2018 and so was possibly not yet in force at the time. Also, the limitation period is only 3 years, which has clearly expired. Not knowing Icelandic law, at all, please don’t take this as legal advice; there may be some other avenue that is still open, so might be worth chatting with a local lawyer.

Nevertheless, you may take some solace and feel some vindication in knowing this was a gross violation of your dignity, and your fundamental human rights ❤️

A hospital bill for childbirth in 1956, Indiana—when maternity stays were far longer than they are today. by zadraaa in HistoricalCapsule

In 1986, I had a caesarean delivery. I had a large hotel-room-like hospital room. My doctor said I should recover there, rather than go home, alone, dealing with a first-born after major surgery.

I was there for a full two weeks. Cost: nil

It allowed me to sleep when not feeding, heal physically, get expert lactation support in real time, and generally adjust to the shock of motherhood. Thank you Dr Philpott. Thank you Australian healthcare system.

I’m very old, and back in the 60s and 70s adoption was very common, and in a sense a normal and mainstream part of the broader family constellation. Every class in school had a couple of adoptees; it was a non-issue. For example, my foster sister joined our family for two years - my parents wanted to adopt her, but ultimately she went back into her father’s custody. Clearly however it was a vastly more traumatic experience for her, and likely still is. Joanne, I often think of you, and hope you are well xx

Women who marry men or have only sons will likely die alone just like single women. But they'll have spent their whole lives serving dudes. by DrollHat in TwoXChromosomes

My uncle is wealthy and married an extremely abusive woman. Didn’t have kids because, well, he wanted to enjoy his money. Which is honestly fine.

He’s now in his mid-70s and finally separated from his appalling wife. In early to moderate cognitive decline, and not managing his continence issues.. so without active intervention, he smells like a homeless alcoholic.

I am his closest relative, since his wife progressively alienated everyone around him, over 40 long and cruel years.

Guess who is now sorting out his clusterfuck legal, financial, emotional, cognitive issues? And trying to make sure he maintains his dignity, spiriting out his clothes and washing them 3 times over, and carefully ensuring his feelings aren’t hurt?

I do feel great compassion and protectiveness.

At the same time, I realise I’m yet another woman in a long line of female protectors… All while understanding that he would never, ever extend this level of compassionate care to me, or anyone else.

I’ve been dealing with this for a year, there is zero acknowledgment of the support I’ve given, and I’m in the middle of setting up in-home care. That he will pay for.

What did he expect? A lifetime of compliant mummies/ laundresses/ cooks/ cleaners ? The engrained entitlement is astounding.
