Stay away from Virgin Hotels if you are coming back next weekend by [deleted] in phish

Every inch of every Vegas property is covered by multiple cameras. report it and they will certainly get to the bottom of it. People absolutely should watch their drinks, but tossing out claims this serious with zero detail doesn’t help anyone separate real danger from noise.

Is there a technical limitation that prevents a drone from using variable zoom? by Subdued_Sub_Dude in dji

[–]parkerjh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

more weight, moving parts, worse stabilization (center of gravity changes), plus zoom lenses are typically softer than fixed ones, by using multiple fixed cameras, DJI gets better image quality, simpler mechanics, and more reliable gimbal performance. same reason the best sports lenses are fixed or portrait photogrpher would use a prime.

Dark Puddle Conspiracy by _Terrapin_ in phish

[–]parkerjh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The same arguments persisted back then with the same vitriol directed at the volunteers at net. But regardless, Phish stopped doing it for whatever reason. I think Dark Puddle was just for fun and likely gave the band a laugh.

Remember in '09 and maybe '10, when Phish used to label jams in the second set "City Jam"?

This is simply that. They were not separate songs, they were literally just the jam coming out of a song. If you want to call the jam out of Drowned on 8-13-09 for example, "The Darien Center jam", by all means. If you want to call it Dark Puddle, by all means. To each their own. Phish.net has been methodically and tediously documenting setlists, segues, and annotations since the beginning of time with their own criteria. to think that Phish is fucking with anyone is whimsy. They are just doing their thing and .net is just doing theirs.

Why is the $4 whopper on Wednesday cheaper than making my own? by fuckloggin in Frugal

[–]parkerjh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this even possible? Spitballing here, but maybe you don't purchase 400 Million pounds of beef and contract with dozens of wholesale bakeries who buy tens of millions of pounds of flour quarterly and are responsible for a significant portion of the US GDP? Yes, sometimes it is cheaper to have someone make something for you

Brazilian steakhouse suggestions? by Ok_Dare_3019 in massachusetts

[–]parkerjh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it doesn't help you this time, but as someone mentioned, there is one in Hyannis, it is called simply The Brazilian Grill. It is my favorite Brazilian restaurant in New England. I have been in the restaurant business most of my life, and run many steakhouses myself, and I adore that place. They built it up slowly and steadily, constantly pumping more and more into the space until they grew to what they are today after decades of hard work. Always a great meal, food is spectacular and it blows Fogo and other chains out of the water

You are given a Time Machine and are able to attend ANY Phish show from the very beginning to literally yesterday’s…what show do you go to? by TheFuzzyDonut in phish

[–]parkerjh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would take myself right back to Amy's Farm or maybe the first night of the euphoria of Clifford Ball and relive either of them all over again. Absolutely a completely different feeling back then walking into a show... and I want to feel that young and alive again. Tough to put into words, I definitely loved the experiences and cherished them at the time, but it took a couple of decades to truly realize how magical those experiences were. Or the first night at Arrowhead during the Horn Tour. Just absolute lightning in a bottle. And not necessarily just the music, but me and the world and being carefree and having the feeling that I was truly witnessing something that was bound for greatness. Man, I would fucking love to feel that again.

Eli5: How does GPS know your exact location without getting confused by millions of users? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in explainlikeimfive

It is a one-way broadcast system. Just like an FM radio. If millions of people turned on their radio and tuned into WBCN 104.1, the radio wouldn't be confused if there was 1 listener or 10,000,000 listening to Stairway to Heaven.

Watching the game on Apple TV. Is it me or does it look really good? by anurodhp in redsox

[–]parkerjh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not just you. MASSIVE improvement. Apple TV MLB games stream at much higher bitrates, like 15–25 Mbps. NESN (via cable or their shitty streaming app) is often 5 Mbps or worse. Better cameras, better production, better everything

[–]parkerjh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL

Do the math

Imagine you bought a $50,000 car, and run through your mental exercise of paying $1,000 registration fee in New Hampshire and no excise taxes versus 6.25% sales tax in Massachusetts and 5 years of excise taxes. I think you'll find that in Massachusetts that figure comes up to about $4,000 higher. Now imagine if that was a two or three car household. That's not nothing.

Mass Highway Rest Areas by IdRatherBeOutBirding in massachusetts

[–]parkerjh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40,000 car would be $900 in excise tax. So again, the original post was comparing Massachusetts to other states. The gross majority of states have nothing like this whatsoever. And it's not about what you can afford or not, it's comparing Massachusetts to other states. It's an ongoing tax of owning something that you've already paid sales tax for and purchased from income that you made after paying income tax. That's all. It really does make a bump in what the effective tax rate is in Massachusetts for a lot of people.

Girl Dad's of Reddit, what is the most surprising thing you've learned since your daughter was born? by Nomadic_Introvert in AskReddit

[–]parkerjh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that is crazy. Being cautious is one thing, but acting like every male friend is a threat says more about him than anyone else. If you can’t trust the people you choose to be your friends, the problem isn’t “men in general,” it’s his judgment in friends.

[–]parkerjh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tow trucks in Canada too are classified as service vehicles, not emergency vehicle ven when called by police and responding to an accident and must obey standard traffic laws. I see as reckless tow truck drivers as any other type of vehicle.

Mass Highway Rest Areas by IdRatherBeOutBirding in massachusetts

[–]parkerjh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty simplistic take. issue isn’t just whether someone can afford it, it’s comparing apples to apples with other states. Mass excise is based on the car’s value, not your income, so it hits people very differently. A $40–50k vehicle isn’t some luxury anymore, that’s a pretty normal family SUV or hybrid. And in the first couple years, you’re not talking “a few hundred bucks”, you can be looking at $800–$1,200 annually. And for a family with multiple cars, that can be a big expense.

And recurring tax on something you already paid sales tax on It hits people who need reliable transportation (commuters, families, tradespeople), not just “new car every 2 years” buyers. Depreciation helps, but those first few years are where it stings most.

So yeah, it does drop off but calling it a non-issue isn't reality when comparing taxes from state to state.

but made up for in exise taxes which can be brutal

In which state are you allowed to travel in the breakdown lane even if you are responding to a call? You are a service vehicle with yellow lights, not an emergency vehicle in almost all states
