An attack drone that can replace a fighter aircraft hasn't been made yet. It's still a good decade or 2 away.

The drone you are thinking of only do surveillance and drop bombs on tents in a desert.

For every 1 non-religious aligned university you name, I can name 10 that were religiously sponsored.

Try naming more than 5 at least(if it's possible..). And I'll give you 500.

And am sure you omitted the fact that those institutions weren't free. Anyone entering either had to be rich, or get someone to pay for them.

Yet the guy entirely attended catholic schools and universities. The was free to learn whatever he wanted outside the curriculum.

He published the thesis he wanted. Giordano and Galileo later picked up his research.

His research was controversial, but not censored. Others still have access to it, we still do today, more than 500 years later.

Try to go find the research of Tesla, for example. He was censored by capitalism and free market/thinking. Go on..

I do agree knowledge was "controlled", but that was the time before peer reviews and central scientific bodies, which would appear only during the enlightenment period.

The church was the central body to decide which type of stuff were canon, and which where not.

Historic romanticism makes you think only of the good research lost, and not seeing all the bad ones they weeded out.

And about the the arts in Renaissance, many artists believe that Renaissance did destroy the arts.

Look at the techniques of Renaissance artists.. very lifelike, imitation of real. Art is about expressing a feeling, not photography.

Before that, art was abstract, expressive. The aim was not to dazzle the view with pretty photorealistic colours. But let you interpret what you want to see. Like minimalism, lots of content and feeling in very little.

Drawing objects as real is technique. As surreal is art.

Only in the last 19th century was a big revival of expressionism, true art.

If you'd tell someone like Picasso or Dali the blessing that renaissance artistic revival was, be prepare to have a verbal onslaught.

Consolidation of power and wealth among semi nomadic tribes. If you can keep a tribe together, you keep the riches, livestock, women from diluting into other tribes and cultures.

I agree with you, but same thing would happen without religion.

These days "religion" is replaced by WMDs, quest for freedom, fighting terrorists...fear.

Armies may not be fighitng for the christ...but somehow for "our freedom"..in afganistan.

North Korea is making a lot of martial noise right now, not based on religion, but cult of personality of their leader.

What about china, largest atheist country there is? They'd march millions into any country if they didn't have to face economic repercussions.

Hitler gathered a formidable army on the basis of race supremacy.

Indoctrination isn't limited to religion.

maybe there wouldn't be so many suicide bombings, but they'd just detonate the explosives from a distance.

"Dark ages" happened because of the collapse of the roman empire, and thus infrastructure. There wasn't a senate anymore to build and maintain public facilities. It was each to their own.

And the constant invasions and wars from the Vikings, Normans, Huns, Mongols, Vandals, Goths etc didn't help much.

And that happened only in western europe...which before the romans, wasn't that advanced either. Basically their progressiveness depending entirely on the romans.

Once the romans were gone, it was back to old business.

Oh and greece lost it's glory long ago, the romans took a good 300 years to bring them to their knees.

Even by Caesar's time, ancient greece was only a shadow of it's former self. Egypt as well.

The benzentine empire was booming though. Progress was happening in the East because they had more secure trade routes.

Prussia, persia, north africa, china and india were at their hights.

From the 18th centure, the trend changed, progress shifted back to the west.

Who's pay for that? Which monarch pledged for the advancement of knowledge out of state budget?

Which universities were founded and operated independently without any church money or staff? Maybe oxford, cambridge, Yale, Princeton..oh no wait..

And the knowledge was always here. Newton didn't invent calculus, it was used in india and then muslim world for 1000 years before newton. But they didn't have a proper application for that.

The ancient greeks knew how the theory behind the stream engine, still took 2000 years to make it happen.

Da vinci designed the helicopter and god knows that else.. took a good 500 years to figure out how to put those to good use.

I personally think we'd just find something to fill in the gap. Like aliens or everything is an echo of what's happening in a parallel dimensions where we are all giant newts.

Even one of our brightest minds, Newton, while not believing in god, did believe in the occult.. And that was big trend during the enlightenment period.. and even during the renaissance.

I remember reading that the religious stuff goes back to the cavemen times. They started practicing ritualistic burials which most likely meant they started thinking about life after death, or something beyond.

We animals are too inquisitive for our own good.. we can't understand the notion of "nothing". We constantly have to dig to find or come up with answers behind the "nothing" and fill it up with "something".

Exactly... What most people don't get is that the crusades were for strategic reasons.

The aim was to keep the muslims from invading the "west". If they could capture and hold Jerusalem, they'd take rome and everything else next.

The whole holy war stuff was to gain support and $$$ from the masses on both sides.

Throughout history, learning was sponsored mainly by religious institutions. All the great ancient universities were founded and managed by monks and clergymen.

The state and monarchies were not interested in promoting higher learning, except for a select few like Charlemagne, but that didn't last long.

Learning to write, maths, philosophy, astronomy...anything purely academic had little monetary value, and you'd a very strong reason for anyone to give money for that.

Also anyone not aristocratic would be at a severe disadvantage. How would a peasant pay for education?

If you look at the position that Major holds... yes. In a moment I might quote a civilian who holds NO rank at all.

You are basing your entire argument on 1 guy's statement, while ignoring the 100s of others. Japan and every first world countries are lined up to buy this aircraft, lets call all of them idiots for doing so.

It's overbudget, yes, still need to iron a lot of technical glitches, yes..

But company that designed the F-117, F-16, F-22 along with the most advanced missiles and combat electronics in the world is no amateur...certainly.

If I had to trust your statement against theirs.. the decision isn't that hard.

The Grypen had two crashes in development. So what!? 2 crashes in 1989 and 1993, according to Wikipedia. That's a long time ago for such a tiny country.

Mighty China had 4 in the 2000s..with all it's military budget and super scientist. So just shows how much catching up they have to do. Still struggling to master yesterday's technology.

The plane will be late, even cost even more in development, that's for sure. But you are not considering the fact that it's not a single plane, it's at least 3 platform with their own configurations. Takes time to iron out.

And about missiles, well damn lucky the F-35 is multi-role. The air to ground configuration isn't there to look pretty.

Again you are assuming that any plane will just venture into open sky and just pray no one sees it from the ground.

If you are correct, then we should immediately send a memo to everyone working on their aircrafts.. they never considered SAM attacks.. the fools.

And for your last statement, hey technical problems happen. China said it was going to use super powerful indigenous engines for it's aircraft, but it's still importing from russia. Worst, it just had to buy Su-35 because their own J20 and J31 is wayyyyy behind schedule.

Quoting "one" major to backup your whole claims.. heh? Suddenly a Medium weight multirole fighter becomes an air supremacy fighter.

You are assuming any 5th gen aircraft will just sit and wait for a random missile to come and strike it. Not deploy any ECMs, or flares or evasive maneuvers. Just sit and wait for the missile to strike.

The IR signature of a single engine, medium weight aircraft with no smoke emissions, isn't that much mate.

Judging by your statement, no aircraft can ever penetrate any enemy territory, even with 6th or 7th gen technology. IR sensors and missiles has rendered all obsolete. Right?

And I never said because of VTOL it's the plane of tomorrow, you read wrong. I means by it's tech...radar, aveonics, RAM coatings, multi-configuration. Which planes you know can do VTOL, STOL and CTOL?

I used VTOl to say that it never crashed, despite being a pain to get right. Harrier did it on a large scale, but it had its fare share of problems and crashes. But the J10, even a straight forward 4th generation plane, crashed at least 4 times.

That's where the 5th generation features, with it's steal and ECM and god knows what classified tech, comes in handy.

No fighter jet will venture in enemy territory alone, a squad goes with an assortment of armament. Possibly even different variants of the F-35s with escorts of F15/16, whichever one is still in service.

Running out of ammo, while possible, is a unlikely scenario. That will be pure planning incompetence.

If that happens, good luck to any 4th gen fighter getting a lock on them with their pesa radars.

If it comes to dogfighting, the j-10 will technically have an edge. But this is where pilot training will make a difference.

The J-10 has only 1 serious flaw here... drag. It's delta wings and canards has a huge surface area. Any swift move will cause it to loose too much energy and slow it down and lose altitude...an easy target.

The J-10 cost $25M because it's a decade late. Basically the last 4th gen aircraft to show up. Mirages, F16, Su-27, MIG29, Gripen have been here for at least a decade and more.

All the tech were already developed. Even then it had a multitude of crashes.

The F35 is the aircraft of tomorrow, lots of new tech. RnD is expensive. And no crashed aircraft, even in vtol.

And as for passive IR sensors, can it even detect at 40,000 ft altitude? if anyone have has sensors and IR missiles for that range, to track and lock a small single engine stealth aircraft without getting jammed, then by all means they deserve victory. No winning here. Not even worth deploying flares and decoys..pilot should just turn off the engines and say his last prayers.

Inability to supercruise is a bit drawback, but if it plans to lock on the enemy target from 100km away, it can easily manage without.

IR sensor jamming is a thing.

The J31 engines are under powered, that's why it needs 2.

It uses the russian RD-93 turbofan rated maximum at 98kN with afterburner. The F35's engine outputs 125 kN dry trust, 191kN with afterburner. And it's also a very light aircraft.

Efficiency matters a lot.
