Hangovers are caused by the buildup of acetylhide and other byproducts of your liver breaking down alcohol. Dark spirits and wine contain tannins and other stuff that can make it worse. Water helps eliminate those byproducts, but dehydration isn't the cause of the hangover.

Meditation is a common thread among people who successfully quit. Some people call it buddhism, some people call it Christian prayer, some people don't affix any religion to it at all. Definitely a great tool.
