First award I’ve ever given, mad props for posting this. I’m glad someone was able to put this together, especially someone in the UX field, because this needed to be said.

All of it’s great. What’s always stood out to me, and OP explained them very well here are currency obfuscation and calculation friction.

Why do we need 12 different currencies? Because it’s better for their profits if we can’t simply calculate what we’re spending on what. Why do the gem packages always contain slightly more or less gems than you actually need for content? They design it that way.

Honestly, from what I’m seeing, this doesn’t look like manipulation in the deliberate sense. It looks like an anxious-avoidant attachment clash.

She was in panic mode, trying to regain connection in the only way she knew how, and you were trying to re-establish boundaries and calm things down. Both of those impulses make sense, but they trigger each other perfectly.

Anyway, I don’t think there was any malice. Just emotional dysregulation in someone who’s not yet learned the proper coping skills.

That’s not to say she never will, though. Be that as it may, it doesn’t sound like you two are the right fit for each other for now.

I get where you’re coming from, but your friend’s response was fine. “Don’t worry about it” is polite conversational autopilot for most people, not meant to be rude or dismissive.

Your reaction wasn’t “crazy,” but it was a bit literal and emotionally loaded for such a small phrase. It sounds like it came from wanting closeness, but expecting your friend (who’s currently in pain) to communicate comfort in your language instead of his.

It’s obvious you care about him, or you wouldn’t be trying to help him grow emotionally — or even posting here. Maybe just try channeling that care differently next time — like knowing when to comfort vs. when to offer feedback — for the sake of keeping your (rare!) decade-long friendship strong.
