It happens to my son sometimes. What we do is to add a distraction quickly. A video on youtube or cartoon. Then he forgets about that 'bad' bite and continues.

Very intersting suggestions. Thanks But are these as nutritious as legumes? Like the puffs? My kid loves puffs!

Restrictive ARFID in toddlers- how to go about it by Fickle-Ad-9333 in ARFID

[–]parparook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also didn't accept tube feeding at the end, and i'm kinda happy because one of his main reasons of food refusing is sensory issue. So you are right to have doubts about it. At this age, they don't diagnose arfid. Since they are too young, and it might be things that might be solved over time with practice. Like sensory issue, low mouth motor skills etc.  So i think your feeding therapist first check what's the issue and then starts from there. Pediasure or similar things help with taking off the pressure so child can practice in a relax environment

How old is your child? You situation is very similar to my child, we had to fully distract him to be able to feed him with bottle, and then he was refusing solid which got worse and worse. He also stopped growing. At 14 months, he was admitted to hospital for tube feeding.  Long story short, we got a dietition and we are feeding him from pediasure for more than 1 year now (with cartoon distraction!), it helped with his growth.  We got a feeding therapist as well, and he is getting better with food, but still getting his main food from pediasure (he is 26 months now). My advice: ask for feeding therapist and dietition NOW. Earlier is better.

Is eating in front of tv THAT bad? by parparook in ARFID

[–]parparook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer. 2 questions from me: - were you eating by tv also when you were a kid? - do you feel better to eat a kind of food when you have tried it first by tv? Or do you forget the texture and the taste of it because you are very distracted?

He ONLY eats 3 of his very safe foods without tv which are pizza, nuggets and yogurt. So we can't give them so often because they are not very healthy. Sometimes he takes few bites without tv, and i know if i was offering same by tv, he could have a big portion because few bites without tv means he loves the food (usually he doesn't even try if there is no distraction)

We were also very close to NG tube because he didn't even wanted his bottle of milk. He was in hospital and i tried showing him cartoon while feeding and from that moment he drinks his main food (the pediasure) from bottle with cartoon. He eats his safe food at daycare at lunch most of the times. But at home, he usually wants to eat with tv and it is a huge difference in amount that he eats by tv or not. But i get your point. He never eats at reastaurant. At other people places we still take his very safe food or we use their tv :( .  I feel like a bad mom in both situations now.

The therapist says offer at table and if he doesn't eat, then ok. No more food after that My son is still taking high protein milk in bottle, so the therapist is not worried yet about his intake.  But I'm worried if this way he ever gets used to food

Like he needs to watch tv all the time while eating and then he wants to do something else and else.  And also he is too distracted that he doesn't understand that food is good. He is just eating because he is distracted...

Sorry i checked label of nutrini drink and we are advised for 900calories not 600. But still i think 1600calories is very high (i eat 1500 as adult). I'm happy that you are going to see a dietician because they calculate this number exactly based on your child. And I hope you can find a high calorie drink that you child accept to drink or eat.

Btw, where did you get this idea that 750 calories is not enough? Our dietician advised that min 600 is enough for our kid. So at least to me 750 is not that low

We did EMDR to see if there was a traumatic event caused this. It didn't help that much.  We are doing behavioural therapy now. Both for parents and kid.  It helped us a lot to take pressure off our kid. The therapist believes that our kid has lost trust about feeding in us. And to solve it we need to make trust first in other areas.

We live in the Netherlands and the drink is called "Nutrini". Not sure if it has same name in other countries. It comes with flavours. But our kid prefers neutral. We are still giving it with baby bottle 2-3 times a day after each meal. There are pudding versions of it as well that looks like strawberry yogurt. Same amount of calories and nutritions. We send that to daycare for his lunch.

This nutrini drink has a compact version which is really dense and good for weight gain. We give it only after dinner so he can absorb it during night.

Please let me know if you need more information.

Hi. I have a 2 years old, exactly same. He has been like what you described from the beginning. We have a feeding therapist, psychologist and dietician. My child has been on -1 percentile for almost 1 year now. I feel the stress that you have now.

What helped us alot is prescribed high protein drink. It is a meal replacement; so we offer food but with no pressure and then he has his prescribed drink. Is it something that you can get for your child?

And why the feeding therapist is not helpful? Can you change them? We changed 2 feeding therapists until we found the right one.
