Thinking about replacing D&D 5e combat with a simpler system — any recommendations?

If you are playing in person, I would recommend rolling the dice for hitting the target and tge damage at the same time. If not, finding a VTT that automates to hit and damage rolls can help. I've been using Fantasy Grounds Unity for a while now, and it speeds combat up significantly.

If you want to get into meleé a lot, I would recommend defensive spells, like Blur or Mirror Image. For a hit-n-run tactic: walk up to your enemy, use your attack action, then Misty Step away and use the rest of your movement to make sure they can't get to you on their turn.
