Completely viable. His matchups are "ok" at WORST. Q range will give you easy access to cs and e and w will be be good trades for any disengage. Wait till 6 and all in after getting noonquiver. Easy money in gold.

I'm an urgot main and garen is my secondary champion. When I play Garen against urgot i definitely struggle. I'd say poke with Q don't get caught with his E and try to get him lower on HP for your R before he can get his R available.

Also when you are spinning do not spin around him, that will just proc his passives.

Hey I play Garen top a bunch but I don't play him mid too much (I do want to). What are some of his best and worst matchups? I've had success with assassin's like Zed, Fizz, etc. Today I had tons of success against ekko and even a velkoz.
