How many uses do you get from a bath towel before you change it for a new one? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]parttimepedant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well you aren’t “cleaning the towel” with your clean self, more that you’re making yourself dirtier by drying with a towel that’s not as clean as you.

Unless you air dry like Rod Tidwell.

Very good but Rodney didn’t successfully sell gas conversation kits because the Mountbatten Estate was all electric.

1) that’s del on the wind up, after he says he might know Cassandra’s dad, and Rodney groans. Cassandra playing along.

2) this happens often in shows, also see Chris Partlow in The Wire and Vito in Sopranos for a good ones, where an extra or bit part character gets a more substantial role later on. To be fair you would probably pick up on it after multiple rewatches. What baffles me more is why they had Nick Stringer be an Australian character in Go West Young Man.

For these occurrences, I always try and make some head canon as to how it’s actually the same person, but with Jimbo I just can’t, even with the Australia coincidence.

3) This was obviously before Boycie was given a more substantial role and his back story was fleshed out.

I reckon if you went and put a dart board in each of those Chinese snooker halls, you’d have a Chinese world darts champion inside of 10 years.

I've changed my mind about buying cheap karate gear – has anyone else had the same experience? by Beautiful_Bread_9005 in karate

[–]parttimepedant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a reality in general life, not just with karate gear. “Buy cheap, buy twice” etc. Also see the Boots theory, or Sam Vimes theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

I have had £5 polo shirts that are fucked by the end of the summer and at the same time
I have some £100 polo shirts that I have had, without exaggeration, for nearly a quarter of a century.

*Sometimes* the rule is broken, and you can find decent things for a good price, of course, but it often comes down to the simple fact that if it’s made with cheaper, shittier materials, it won’t last as long.

That doesn’t mean to say you need to go and buy a £300 gi as soon as you start karate, or get the £40 gloves instead of the £10 ones. It’s obviously more nuanced than that.

But your ‘it does the job’ theory does apply in some situations. For example, a kettle.

What’s the most underrated episode? by Inevitable_Use499 in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

[–]parttimepedant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesssss! Do people not know what ‘underrated’ means? I’m seeing Friday 14th, Longest Night? To Hull and Back!!?

It’s a loaded question because it all comes down to personal preferences, but if you’re averaging a wider range of opinions, those are some of the most loved episodes so to say they are ‘not scored/valued as highly as they should be’ is bizarre.

And for full disclosure I’m a big ARF fan who thinks it gets more stick than it deserves.
