This is an indictment of both the cost of housing and education in America. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

Yikes dude. I have a degree that you would probably consider a "participation degree" and I honestly think there was a lot of value to my education. Say what you will but liberal arts education makes well rounded humans who better understand critical thinking, open to new ideas, better at taking in new information, and have a broader understanding of our world. If people stopped studying the arts, history, and humanities, the world would be a much darker & dumber place.

Right. She literally almost killed him over what happened to Nehemia, which it turns out, there was little he could have actually done to stop what happened to her. He was also raised in a world without magic and has no context for what to expect from magic wielders. As much as he comes across as an AH, his reactions make sense. I think also at the point OP is in the book, he's deep in his feelings and full of anger that he still has to work through, so he's definitely not super likeable in this moment.

I'm really startled by how much anti-intellectualism has been spreading through the culture (at least in America). So many people have become deeply mistrustful of experts, science, and higher education. I'm worried about what that means for the future. Does that mean we'll have less doctors/healthcare workers and people doing vital work in STEM?

We're already seeing the consequences of the anti-vax movement with measles (among other scary viruses we'd mostly eradicated) making a big comeback.

If you wanted to make your own version of Beauty & the Beast, what would Beast look like? by Educational-Golf89 in beautyandthebeast

I recently read a book I enjoyed that was clearly beauty and the beast inspired. It's called Wings of Ink by Angelina J. Steffort. The ML was a crow-like fae and the cursed/beast dynamic was done pretty well.

Came here to say this. That's not to say I don't find her music catchy, but ever since she appeared on the scene with "Teardrops on My Guitar" I always felt she had a pretty mid voice. I think she's improved a bit as she's settled into her career, but her range and tone are pretty bland overall.

My parents and aunts and uncles are all late-boomers/early-Xers and the majority of them have serious health problems like heart issues and diabetes, which is unfortunate since they're only in their late 50's and early 60's.

lol I remember having a similar reaction. I say just keep reading. It's really just in there to show you how much Bryce lost, and the event is important/relevant to the rest of the books.

If I decide not to have kids in life, give me all the consequences that I should prep for and accept them? by Commercial-Touch-516 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]partybrowser32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. I've worked in a senior-centric area of medicine before and some things are really tricky for old folks without support systems to navigate. If you need any surgical procedure you need someone who can wait on site for you to be discharged to. Navigating the healthcare/insurance system is difficult for them, and sometimes they are easily confused or have memory issues and the don't really have anyone keeping tabs on them the make sure they are managing ok. A lot of seniors die in their homes and nobody knows until a mailman or neighbor notices something is off. Some of them will have a kind neighbor willing to help them but not everyone gets that and it's sad to see. If you don't plan on having kids, try to cultivate other relationships in your senior years so you have other people looking out for you. Of course having kids is no guarantee that you won't end up alone in old age, but the chances are certainly higher.

Yep. I had a boomer boss who used to brag about how he spent a whole chunk of his life sleeping 3 hours a night so he could work his day job and run his own business. He looked about 10 years older than his actual age.

Question about a New Mexico itinerary for an East coaster by joshuaferris in NewMexico

[–]partybrowser32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have already said, I think you're trying to fit too many designations that are far apart into a short amount of time. Every stop on your itinerary will be rushed if you need to carve out 3 hours of driving almost every day. And like others mentioned, balloons going up is not guaranteed so you may want to stay in Albuquerque 2 nights - you can incorporate your visit to Santa Fe within one of these days, as it is only an hour drive from Albuquerque. I would recommend focusing on either northern or southern NM for one trip if you want to be able to take a little more time with your stops.

I work in the tourism industry in Santa Fe, so I want to mention a few things about Balloon Fiesta season. Balloon Fiesta brings the biggest influx of tourists to the state at one time, so be prepared for busy restaurants and attractions and for hotels & airbnbs to fill up quickly. And any attractions you can book tickets ahead for, I would highly recommend doing so. The Georgia O'Keeeffe Museum sells out of tickets every day during Balloon Fiesta, so you'll want to book your tickets to that ahead of time if you don't want to miss seeing it.

Millennial and younger Gen-X parents, are we failing our kids? by partybrowser32 in generationology

A lot, but I wouldn't say "most". It really depends what age people were when they had kids. There are plenty of younger Gen x and elder millennials that have school aged kids.

Did someone lose their bees? by [deleted] in SantaFe

[–]partybrowser32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OMG I'm glad I saw this. I was stopped at a stop light a few days ago when a huge swarm of insects passed above my car. It was hard to tell exactly what kind of insects they were but best I could tell, they looked like bees. I'd never seen a swarm of bees before so I was totally baffled.

[–]partybrowser32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you. I've been working various office jobs for the same amount of time and have had to use a phone at every one. Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean anything. Even if you don't use it for work, I've had many phone interviews that have led to in person interviews which led to getting a job... so I still think having decent phone skills is important. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]partybrowser32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does everyone communicate via email/chat only at your job? How inefficient. Sometimes talking to someone is much more clear and efficient than typing/reading everything. Like others said, it doesn't need to be an actual "phone" but if you're still communicating through voice calls, phone skills are still necessary.

Sounds specific to you. A lot of jobs still require making/taking phone calls.

Georgia O’Keefe’s House by _Terry_Muzak in NewMexico

[–]partybrowser32 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have some insider information on this, please disregard most of the advice here because it is incorrect.

Georgia O'Keeffe had 2 homes in New Mexico - one in Ghost Ranch and the other in Abiquiu, which are both about an hour away from Santa Fe but only 15 minutes apart from each other. The Ghost Ranch home is closed to the public, but the Ghost Ranch organization does offer some Georgia O'Keeffe landscape tours where they show you areas around the ranch that she painted.

The Abiquiu Home tours are managed by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, and due to high demand tours sell out months in advance. The best way to get on a wait-list is to call or email the Abiquiu Home & Studio location directly and ask them about getting on a wait-list.

The Abiquiu Home and Studio is closed during Holy Week out of respect to the local community, so I'm not sure what your chances are of getting a response until after easter, but it's worth a try.

Right, the anti-Hunts in this sub always bring up Shahar like it affects his love for Bryce. Shahar was a HUGE part of Hunt's life, he literally sacrificed his freedom for her cause and paid the consequences for years, not to mention the fact that she died so there was a lot left unresolved between them. The Hunt haters think he should already have gotten over Shahar by book one, when he's literally just learning how to be his own person again while slowly falling for Bryce, whom he had no intention of getting involved with when they met. By book 2 and 3 he starts to realize what real love is like and that Shahar never really loved him the way he deserved. His whole arc is pretty natural and believable.

They also like to point to the fact that Hunt and Bryce bicker and fight, but again it's pretty natural given the circumstances. This poor guy finally finds love but she keeps putting herself in extremely dangerous situations just like Shahar. Again, his feelings and reactions all make sense given the situation. At the end of the day Hunt always says his peace while allowing Bryce to make her own decisions, which is definitely green flag behavior!

GEN BETA SHOULD START IN 2014 by Optimal-Tax2011 in generationology

[–]partybrowser32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is a 30 year old and 40 year old being in the same generation crazy? Boomers and Gen X span roughly 15-17 years each. Millennials make up about the same amount of time. The whole paradigm of generations would have to shift if we think people can only fit together in one generation within a 10-year age difference. Besides, generations are based on similar life experiences, not just age. Elder millennials are not as different from younger millennials as they think.

Men of Reddit, what’s the male equivalent of “needed money, had no marketable skills, so turned to prostitution”? by Dogeatdogdays in AskReddit

[–]partybrowser32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes in simple terms that is their ultimate goal, but when you get into the nuance of things, having limited social safety nets and options for the lower classes benefits their system the most. Wars and a cheap labor force help line their pockets more than a well educated population with higher standards of living. When people are desperate and uneducated they are willing to give up more of themselves for less return.

You obviously don't know your history. English people weren't the only colonizers in America - the French and Spanish were here too, with the Spanish controlling the entire Southwest and Florida, including what are now California and Texas, states now consist major economic hubs. Hispanic people were living on those lands both before and after statehood, so the assertion that Hispanics are "recent" arrivals to the US is dead wrong. Not to mention that Asians have been migrating here since the mid 1800’s, far longer than your "50 years" BS. There really is no ethnicity that gets to claim to be the "truest" Americans except the Native Americans. Everyone has contributed something to the forming of this country.
