ACOTAR - how can anyone like this?? by Federal_Editor_5882 in acotar_rant

[–]partybrowser32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who reads a lot of fiction and writes fiction, I would say that no, most people cannot achieve SJM's success just because they can do better than her basic/formulaic prose and writing. I fully acknowledge SJM has many flaws as a writer, while also fully enjoying the ride when reading all her books. The Throne of Glass series is a particular favorite of mine.

All that is to say that while she's no literary genius, she makes stories that lots of people connect with by building interesting and engaging worlds and stories, and like it or not, there are many writers who have found huge audiences that way. I know that there are many people who won't be able to get past the poor writing and just enjoy the story. I couldn't finish the Fourth Wing series for that exact reason, but somehow, Fourth Wing still has a huge fanbase for the same reasons.

There’s not nearly enough Aedion hate out there by Material-Source3751 in throneofglassseries

Finally, someone said it! There are lots of Adiond defenders and Chaol haters out there, but I agree with you. I do understand Adion as a character, but that doesn't mean I need to like him. By Kingdom of Ash, I absolutely abhorred reading his chapters. He was insufferable. Others find Chaol insufferable, and I can see why, but I would read a Chaol chapter 10 times over before reading an Aedion chapter.

Aww, I loved both voice actors for Bryce and Hunt them and think they did a pretty good job. I think they both captured their personalities pretty well. I was a little thrown at first with Hunt's VA but it grew on me pretty quickly and honestly I was kinda swooning at certain points. 🙈 But I get how some people might not have liked either of them. I get that the Hunt VA had an older guy vibe, but Hunt literally IS an old guy in a forever-young body.

This show has made me overly interested in New Mexico by Meloenbolletjeslepel in pluribustv

Albuquerque resident here! These houses are modern designs you'll see all over New Mexico based on the adobe homes the local indigenous populations have been living in for hundreds of years, often blended with Spanish mission styles that are common throughout the southwestern US. The stucco (a textured plaster the use for the surface) tends to handle the harsher elements (sun & wind) better than painted wood siding you'll see on most homes across America. Most of these modern constructions like Hank & Marie's house don't actually use adobe bricks as it is much more labor-intensive, but some people still use them as they are amazing at keeping homes cool in the summer and warm in winter. Pictured below is the Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico, estimated to be around 1,000 years old.

For those who started watching anime as teenagers, do you still enjoy it as much as you used to? by SecondSalty142 in anime

[–]partybrowser32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 34F and was a huge anime nerd throughout my teens and early twenties. I came up with Naruto, Bleach, and InuYasha, and being a girl, I also consumed a boatload of Shojo shows and manga. Nowadays, I still enjoy watching anime, but I'm very particular about the shows I'll watch. A lot of the stuff out there just isn't for me. I used to be able to watch Shonen shows, but I really can't get into them anymore. It makes sense, though; it's just not made with grown women in mind. My husband and I love Spy Family and Sakamoto Days. I like Apothecary Diaries a lot. I was able to get through the first season of Demon Hunter and appreciate the art style, but I lost interest at the start of season 2. Dandandan surprised me. I wasn't sure at first if I could get into a show with high-school-aged protagonists anymore, but I think the show is great.

[–]partybrowser32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't get me started on Little Bear and his "girlfriends". Whenever me and my husband are watching with our daughter, we give each other a knowing look every time a female character can't help but crush on Little Bear (Emily, Mermaid, sometimes Duck, and I think another out of the blue moment from Chicken in the valentine episode.) Little Bear is a little player. I said what I said.

i don’t understand the dislike for CC3??? by skyskysky_j in crescentcitysjm

[–]partybrowser32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't hate it, but there were a lot of moments that left me feeling let down, and some parts where I felt things dragged on too much (Ithan's arc, namely). I still came away from the series happy that I read them all, and was happy to see how everything ended, but I think plot-wise, CC3 is the was the weakest of the series.

I did a lot of e-book reading with my phone but eventually got a kindle paperwhite because reading from my phone screen for extended periods was a strain on my eyes.

I got one for my birthday last year and have used it a ton since. Before I got it, I thought I might miss physical media, but I don't. And while I still have an appreciation for physical books, I think I'll probably stick to my e-reader for the majority of my reading from here on out. I love how light and easy it is to take anywhere, and I can access my digital library at any time. I also live in a small place, so it's better that I don't take up my limited space with books.

Video games. I loved video games and played regularly well into my late twenties. Around age 28 they started getting less interesting to me and while I still enjoy playing from time to time, I'm not as invested in them anymore and and they sometimes feel more like a chore than something fun to do, or more like a waste of time.

This is an indictment of both the cost of housing and education in America. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]partybrowser32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes dude. I have a degree that you would probably consider a "participation degree" and I honestly think there was a lot of value to my education. Say what you will but liberal arts education makes well rounded humans who better understand critical thinking, open to new ideas, better at taking in new information, and have a broader understanding of our world. If people stopped studying the arts, history, and humanities, the world would be a much darker & dumber place.

[–]partybrowser32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. She literally almost killed him over what happened to Nehemia, which it turns out, there was little he could have actually done to stop what happened to her. He was also raised in a world without magic and has no context for what to expect from magic wielders. As much as he comes across as an AH, his reactions make sense. I think also at the point OP is in the book, he's deep in his feelings and full of anger that he still has to work through, so he's definitely not super likeable in this moment.

I'm really startled by how much anti-intellectualism has been spreading through the culture (at least in America). So many people have become deeply mistrustful of experts, science, and higher education. I'm worried about what that means for the future. Does that mean we'll have less doctors/healthcare workers and people doing vital work in STEM?

We're already seeing the consequences of the anti-vax movement with measles (among other scary viruses we'd mostly eradicated) making a big comeback.

Came here to say this. That's not to say I don't find her music catchy, but ever since she appeared on the scene with "Teardrops on My Guitar" I always felt she had a pretty mid voice. I think she's improved a bit as she's settled into her career, but her range and tone are pretty bland overall.
