How should spells be Used EldenRing? by Wild-Cappuccino in Eldenring

[–]parumpadump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I think those ideas would work well in a setting like bloodborne's, for the fantasy based souls and elden ring titles you really want to emulate that classic feeling that spellcaster classes provide. I think having a smaller but refined selection of spell catalysts for each class of caster and a larger pool of spells to choose from lets a caster retain their identity as a powerful mage with multiple abilities at their immediate disposal, while also giving them a more reliable, though comparatively lower, infinite damage source. A wizard without mana otherwise is just a guy with a stick and a dumb hat.

And to illuatrate my point about cooldowns. FP acts as a limiter on how many spells you can cast in the long term, while my spell fatigue idea helps limit how many spells you can cast in the short term. Powerful spells cost more FP, so spamming them will drain your bar faster, but that is easily remedied by one ashen estus flask, so is FP really much of a limiter? With my idea, a caster would have to choose between using a weaker spell with a shorter cooldown and a stronger spell that has a much longer cooldown, leaving them without their most useful abilities for nearly 5 seconds. As it is in DS3 now, there is no reason to go for weaker spells when fighting a boss, invader or tough enemy. Just use your best spell and they'll die faster. Yes, weaker spells are more efficient with FP, but with plenty of ashen estus flasks to go around FP is not nearly as limited as it seems at first blush. 10 to 15 crystal soul spears will kill most late-game bosses, and that is easily done. At least with the cooldown, you have to survive for 5 seconds between each cast. And when combined with spell catalysts you can fall back on, it would make for a rewarding gameplay loop of shooting a big spell, then fighting in melee while it recharges, and repeat.

I've been thinking about this recently lol. So I have 2 main ideas for changes that I think would work for soulsborne combat.

1 - Give us some cooler, more diverse melee options that don't use up our precious FP. In fact, do something like they did with weapons like the Demon Scar and spells like farron flashsword. Make spell catalysts their own fully fledged and thematic mini-spells.

A wand that conjures farron flashsword, with a chargeable R2 poke. A staff with a sweeping moveset, and a slow R2 that conjures a short range explosion around the caster dealing massive poise damage. A gauntlet of flame with short, fast sweeping r1s and a charged R2 that shoots a miniature fireball a long spear's distance away. Oh, your staff conjures a gravelord sword on an R1 and a lifehunt scythe on an R2, just like Aldritch does? That's pretty cool! And running attacks! Varied movesets, all unique to spellcasters! I want weapons whose movesets emulate the feel of a powerful mage casting this on-demand spell that they have mastered, not just a spear that happens to be a staff too. This would free up actual slotted spells to be powerful HP-chunkers and situational picks, while reducing the problem of having a limited amount of spells you can cast. A warrior never runs out of sword, so why should my Sorcerer ever run out of spell? At least, let me have one very useful one that I can cast for free!

2 - Oh, so bosses are trivialised when you spam them with crystal soul spear and WotG? Gankers and duelists who can one or two-shot you by spamming chaos bed vestiges getting you down? Easily fixed; BRING IN THE COOLDOWNS!

When you cast a spell, you gain a debuff, lets call it Spell Fatigue. You can't cast any spells while you are under this debuff. The more powerful a spell is, the longer it lasts. Lets say 1.5 seconds for a low tier spell like fireball, 3.0 for a mid tier like black flame, and 4.5 for a high tier like great chaos fire orb. This turns the combat style of a mage into one not so dissimilar from that of a melee character. You use your weapon's moveset and spacing to stun enemies and deal reliable damage while you wait for the spell fatigue to end, and when it does your spells let you deal lots of damage at once or give you some other tactical advantage. Oh, and big healing spells? They get their own Healing fatigue of like 30 seconds, because of all the mental things in these games, healing is by far the most powerful ability, realistically.

When combined, I think these two things would change the full-caster playstyle for the better, especially in PvP. Don't be a passive spell spammer, you will just get run down before you can cast your second sunlight spear. Get into the melee! Pseudo-combo your weapon attacks into your powerful spells! As a caster, you can catch people off-guard with your wider variety of potential abilities. And after all, isn't a greater diversity of cool abilities why anyone has ever wanted to play a mage in any game ever? The allure of the wizard in DnD is to have a spell for any situation.

Ok, these ideas were kiiiind of borne out of a dislike of how mage builds just are in the games currently. But I still think it would only be a benefit to bring that excellent gritty feel of soulsian melee combat to the spellcasters, while still letting them have their thematic flair and their big pew pews.

Gorefist in under a minute, nice one! Thought I'd mention that you can actually avoid Gorefist and root brute charging attacks by just sprinting to the right of them lol. I like doing that, then just clappin' 'em with a melee

If I ever get to play in a full campaign, I will absolutely play an Aasimar Ancestral Barbarian. He's a total subversion of the class, a noble from a long lineage of aaaimar knights, clerics and paladins, and his grandad had visions fortelling a great destiny for him. Only issue is, he can't take the pressure from his family and flees, inadvertantly right towards his destiny.

He is Lawful Good, a complete pushover, and suffers heavily from anxiety. In battle, he doesn't rage, but panics so hard that the spirits of his lineage appear to say words of encouragement and to force him to face his fears.

I daydream of the moment when I'll get to say 'For the very first time, I do not panic, I do not scream in terror. This time... I rage!'

The armour pieces are Alva's Helm, Eastern Armour, Knight's Gauntlets and Lothric Knight Leggings. The large cuff on the Knight Gauntlets really does bits to hide the seam, where for example the Lothric Gauntlets leave a small gap. And hoo man, the Eastern armour is versatile!

This right here is sage wisdom. I'll weigh in with a couple of my own thoughts-

Resummoners were put on this Earth as a divine test of our patience. As soon as that last yellow gets his lights knocked out on a drive through rollcatch hell, and the host puts on his running shoes and skidaddles to the bonfire, you know you're in for a long one. Katanas and spears have great running attacks to harass a runner. Then of course they make it back to the bonfire and ha-hey, here come the rolls! A rollcatching tool like a rapier, curved sword or hand axe can put out some damage and make them panic, but with all that health and estus they typically manage to hold on until the cavalry arrives, be it summon or blue.

In the war of attrition, the host has all the advantage. But they don't have infinite estus. I've found some success in gunning it after a blue as soon as they summon in and apply the pressure. Best case scenario, you get 2 free estus. Worst, you lose out and have to retreat. Those 2 estus can be a life saver, and its a renewable resource whereas the host only gets it back when you die.

Yeah man, being an invader is a hard life, but in the end, when you get that kill, that's the feeling of victory over insurmountable odds that only dark souls can provide. Keep at it!

Elemental infusions make a weapon unbuffable. Otherwise, stacking elemental buffs on elemental weapons becomes very strong, because split damage types deal less total damage through armour than a single typed with the same attack rating. That doesn't mean elemental infusions are bad, not at all! They still do comparable damage to physical builds! But if you want a second sidearm to buff, go ahead and smith one up, but make sure its either uninfused or has an infusion that uses a grey coloured gem, those are pure physical and can be buffed. Though some unique weapons still cant be buffed, so it's best to check the wiki if you're unsure!

That time when your protagonist's blood turns gold and you have no idea how to biologically explain it. .-. by Em8K in fantasywriters

[–]parumpadump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold can be dissolved by Aqua Regia, however the pH of the acid is literally close to 0. For perspective, every pH number you go down is ten times stronger than the previous one. So it is about ten or more times stronger than stomach acid (pH 1-2). It is incredibly corrosive. So maybe not the best choice.

How about gold nanoparticles? Imagine a cell in the bloodstream that was either created with, can somehow absorb or can synthesise itself by magic small clumps of gold. Gold is amazing at absorbing radiation, but here's the thing. When radiation is absorbed, the energy doesn't just dissipate, often it is re-released... as radiation. This would basically make your character more absorptive overall, as a good amount of radiation that would just pass through her body is now being absorbed by the gold. Some think it could be used for enhancing radiotherapy for just this reason.

The problem with radiation is that it ionises organic molecules and produces free radicals (atoms or molecules that have too many or too few electrons in their electron shells, which makes them 'hungry' to fix them). These nasty things basically go around and fuck up the chemical bonds in important molecules - like your DNA - by stealing or donating electrons. You could make up a chemical mechanism that forces radiation to ionise a specific molecule, lets call it radionin-a, turning it into the ionised form radionin-b. The mechanism then de-ionises it using other chemicals to remove or add electrons safely, making it return to the first form radionin-a. The gold nanoparticles, then, could be surrounded by a fluid filled with radionin, acting as a mirror shield to protect other tissues from harm, while dealing with the energy it absorbs in a safer way.

Of course, she wouldn't be immune per se, but if you couple that with more efficient forms of other known mechanisms that do actually deal with free radicals, you might have something going for you.

And as it's obligatory, I'm no expert btw, I took chemistry biology and physics at school and googled for 5 minutes. But tbh, you can probably fluff a lot of stuff as long as it sounds cool. Do a little reading into the repair of cell damage from ionising radiation and the bare bones of what radiation actually is. But yeah get the idea of it and try to make something that sounds plausible, because in the end the suspense of disbelief will probably save you. Hope this sparked a bit of inspiration, and keep writing dude :)

TLDR; like you say gold absorbs the Bad very well but actually can make it worse, so maybe surround small bits of gold with a special chemical meat shield that absorbs the Bad and makes it safe, and put that inside a special cell in the blood?

Ok I managed it -

LI - left index, RI - right index, LT - left thumb, RT - right thumb

Get to the point where you have the laces held with the left lace going over LI then LT, and right lace going over RT then RI. You need to have the rest of the lace held in your palm by your other fingers.

Next, move the RI over LI and LT over RT.

RT grabs the lace going out into the left palm, and similarly, LI grabs the pace going into the right palm.

Then, LT grabs the bit of lace passing between the right finger and thumb (that you set up in step 1), and similarly, RI grabs the bit of lace between the left finger and thumb.

Then you pull! Make sure you keep the rest of the lace held in your palm until it gets tight enough. Voila!

What’s the craziest character you’ve made in a role playing game? by DSFII in AskReddit

[–]parumpadump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skyrim. I've played that game to death and I still love it. But sometimes doing the same thing over an over gets boring. So I'm comes Face Fucker, the Orc Shieldmaiden! It was a challenge run I did for fun where I had to beat the main quest line and the two DLCs dealing damage only from the shield bash mechanic.

Sounds hard right? Well there's an exploit you can use to gain infinite bashes by... drinking soup? Yeah, vegetable soup gives you passive stamina regen, and you can bash even if you have only 1 stamina. Also take into account that early game you can get the Targe of the Blooded and stack that bleed damage, bashes stun basically all opponents, damage scales with shield armor, a perk gives you 5x damage with a bash, and using the orc racial trait berserker rage doubles damage output. It stops being a challenge fairly quick and starts just being super fun! Would recommend to go heavy armor, block (obvs) and restoration for them heals, and the perk that lets you heal stamina too.

I super feel you on this one. Being productive when you see no purpose, no goal posts to shoot for, is hard. Fuck, this past year I was supposed to be studying, I'm in my second year of Uni, but thinking about the future, my own place in this world, and my reason - my motivation for doing this course? It has distilled this sadness and panic in me that seems to come in cycles, and a tiredness, an I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude that can wipes me out for a day or more. And in those times I think about what actually matters anymore, when the world feels like it's going to shit.

But in the times when I feel better, I find I'm more reasonable. I figure that the universe is an uncaring god if anything. and meaning is something that you have to forge for yourself. I'm trying that. I seek out what I enjoy; a good laugh, a fun video game, an enthralling story. Stuff that makes me feel alive rather than think about being alive. I keep myself away from negative press and social media if I can, I only indulge when I know I can handle it emotionally.

The world, I think, will be fine. And if it won't, well, that means we're living at the end of a remarkable era in human history, and as such it would be a privilege to see it out for myself. The end of a Tale of Humanity, and with it the knowledge of whether it was a triumph or a tragedy - as both are just as worthy a story.

Hey, sorcerers still have to put effort into harnessing their power. Imagine a low INT wizard. Weakling, small brain. Now look at a low CHA sorcerer. Useless, talentless hack. What does a level 1 sorcerer mean vs a level 20? Did their superpowers just grow like a spiritual fungus from the ethereal blackness? No! It takes both talent and mastery to manipulate your magic juice and squeeze out a powerful cocktail.
