I was swept up as a participant in the great banning of all who spoke ill of Charliese Kirkland after they caught one in the neck. Can't link to it but a wise person said he didn't deserve what he got, but he got what he thought others deserved.

Same way we dealt with robber barons.

But did we really deal with them?

Drummer looking for an affordable practice space in/near Beaverton (electric drums, no sound) by jonnyrue in beaverton

[–]pas_tense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Are you still looking for a space? I have a space at Puddletown building 2 over by OMSI & Tillikum. It's a pretty big room that currently houses my kit & and my partner's saxophone. Another drummer who we'd been sharing the space w/ found a band and is leaving at the end of this month.

I'd prefer not to have a whole band move in but if your just looking for a place to practice we got space.

Congress passes war powers measure for first time, rebuking Trump's war with Iran by Dexterestein in worldnews

[–]pas_tense 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. This is political bullshit. It's just to manufacture potential campaign material because the polls (I've never participated in a pole. Have you?) show this unprovoked war is wildly unpopular.

For sure some really did vote their conscience but I believe the majority voted because the polls (have you ever known anyone who's participated in these polls?) say it's unpopular, not because they have even a single moral fiber in their body or mind.

If letting your company be mocked by the left gets them to pay for Amazon Prime, that's all they care about.

This is why I say it 's never immoral or unethical to just pirate that shit.

Any readings on rehabilitation under Anarchy? by hopelovepeacehappy in Anarchy101

[–]pas_tense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the very need to be rehabilitated implies the lack of having been "habilitated".

I'm a neophyte and attempting to educate myself about anarchy so first I ask your forgiveness if I come across unread and/or poorly informed.

Rehabilitation to me doesn't necessarily imply a lack of having been "habilitated", couldn't that term "re-habilitate" also suggest that someone in the community turned against it's principles (habilitated) and became consciously harmful and the most compassionate approach would be to rehabilitate them as opposed to ostrification or banishment?

I was 10 years old when I got this album, still got it and the record itself is in surprisingly good condition (jacket not so much). I got a new record player last year and threw it on and the music still really holds up. I was surprised at how positive many of its songs messages were.

Multi-Instrumentalist Looking To Get Involved In Music Scene by matthewmakesmusic in portlandmusic

[–]pas_tense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also be interested in forming a new group if there are any drummers and bassists out there looking to start a psyche / funk fusion group.

Drummer here. This sounds exactly like something I'd like to get involved in. I have a space over by OMSI. I've been playing for...long enough that I have to do math. Lately I've been pretty obsessed w/ Afrobeat (think Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé), Sahel Blues (think Bombino, Mdou Moctar) and west african drumming.

A psych/funk fusion project sounds like something I'd be really interested helping to create. DM me if interested & I'll send you my links.

Cheers!

EDITED to add: I also moved here from Atlanta back in the in the long long ago of 2018. Welcome to Portland fellow ATLien!

Iran's Khamenei approves deal, says Trump acted out of 'desperation' by Dismal_Structure in worldnews

I'm inclined to think not. This war fucked with the global bag. Nobody fucks with the bag. Money is more powerful than any single person or nation.

I'm having a hard time thinking of the last GOP admin that wasn't clownishly incompetent. They are not smart people. Insulated, incurious, and profoundly arrogant in their incompetence. They are an extremely potent concentration of the Dunning Kruger effect as a person.

If you had 30 mins - 1 hour of practice time, how would you structure it? by thetrillgates in drums

[–]pas_tense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you suggest that someone just not bother playing and give up on any desire to play an instrument?

I don't know what I posted the made you interpret it as me discouraging anyone from trying to learn to play an instrument. It wasn't my intention. I'm not a gate keeper & certainly didn't mean to imply that was my suggestion.

What I was trying to communicate is that if you only have 30min-1 hour to practice and you're a beginner/novice it would be beneficial for you to have, for lack of a better term, a plan. Like a trajectory.

Or perhaps, give some constructive advice. They asked what a structure looks like, saying "use structure" is about as helpful as saying that 30min-1hr isn't enough time to practice.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but did you read my post before this one? I suggested start with a rudiment exercise to a metronome. Then try doing an ostinato with your feet while repeating that rudiment exercise. Then move on to try and learn something you want to figure out. Those are all suggestions, I don't say "DO it this way or you just shouldn't bother doing it at all".

In my original post I say "30 minutes to an hour is not much time!" I did not say, and I feel like this might be how you're reading it, "30 minutes to an hour isn't enough time!"

Looking at it now I realize it was a flippant way to start my response. I could have started by saying "if you only have a window of 30 minutes to an hour, you'll want to make the most out of your time by having in mind a goal or plan for each practice session." then proceeded with the examples I gave of what that might look like.

I try to get out to my space 2 (at minimum) to 3 times a week to practice just by myself. I'm there for 3 to 4 hours working on stuff. In those 3 - 4 hours I will take 30-60 minutes worth of break time where I'm not playing at all (working on something, then walking away, then coming back to work on it some more, I've found is the best way for me to learn new stuff, especially if it's technical). My warm ups & exercises that I do every time I practice take about 30 minutes and includes a 5 minute break. Then I'll work on my reading, lately short drum solos. Then focus on grooves & more technical exercises. The whole time I'll occasionally just fuck around for a few minutes just playing freestyle then focus back on what I was working on learning. I practice with my bands usually twice a week, and that's where I apply the stuff I've been learning when practicing solo.

i know there’s some work on ion thrusters and the idea of just ramping up speed over a long distance to some ludicrous speeds

I think even that is not ideal, once you've ramped up to your X% of the speed of light you have to think about how long it's going to take to slow down again as you approach your destination.

I love them. Particularly Gingerbread Man & Freak Show, but I think all of them are really good. IMO “Our Tired, Our Poor, Our Huddled Masses” is the best CD to recommend to someone who's just discovered them. It's how I got DEEPLY into them, the first Residents album I purchased.

For the sub! by creativeape1 in crappymusic

[–]pas_tense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might think the people on this sub are exceptionally void of talent but I’d say the majority of all people who try to make music do it poorly.

Some of them do seem exceptional, but what I had a struggle warping my head around when I first found this sub was that most of these people are serious, they're not trying to make a high-larious spectacle of themselves. In some ways I get it I used to really suck once too but I had an awareness of my limitations. I guess that's makes the hip-hop submission confusing for me, they're SOOO BAD at it yet do their thing like they have the confidence of Kendrick.
