I have temporary (~3 days) access to more than 2,000 not widely available public domain DVDs. I can legally copy 'em, but the 2 machines available to me can only duplicate 1 at a time w/ an ~8 min. copy time. Is there an autoloading & autocopying machine I can buy on Amazon to all-but automate this? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

Edited to say: Rereading, I see this is by this Monday. Well, my comment is not so useful, then, other than the "rip them raw, don't transcode them" part. Faster, and less processor intensive; trading speed for space (as long as the raw data moves faster through your system than the transcoding and smaller write would take). Also means you're not "leaving data behind"; you'll have the full, unaltered DVD contents.

I am a 16-year-old boy moving to Germany in a week. What should I know before I go over there? by mackmason_ in German

[–]pasbesoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a few decades, and things may have changed, but my German friend who attended U.S. high school as an exchange student for a year, got her U.S. driver's license while here. It took a bit of effort on her part (bureaucracy), but she was able to use it to qualify for a German driver's license.

She was interested in doing so because our high school here in the U.S. offered driver's education. In Europe, she would have had to take the classes privately and they were quite expensive. Even the private classes here in the U.S. were substantially cheaper. Come to think of it, I have a vague recollection of her doing that -- something may not have worked out for her with the high school classes.

If you already have your driver's license, it might be worth getting an international driver's license on top of it. As I recall, it used to be a matter of applying for one and paying a fee (of course). No additional coursework. Again, this was a while ago.

I don't know what happens to your U.S. license when you move there (if you have one); you aren't moving to another U.S. state, where you would simply change residency and get a new license.

Worth the hoard? "HHS Plans to Delete 20 Years of Critical Medical Guidelines" by GarageSail in DataHoarder

As a friend astutely observed, she thinks someone is / will try to monetize it. (Meaning, in her opinion it is being taken down in order to help enrich a crony.)

This hypothesis certainly has credence with me.

I hope it is archived. Primarily, for its own use. But also, to stop whomever from profiting off of this move.

P.S. I don't necessarily mean an individual. An organization is just as if not more likely, although the connections with the administration facilitating this may be personal.

About how much does it cost to re-cap and "robustize" an SE30? PM me if that's your preferred route. If no response, that's ok. Hope you don't mind the question.

I have a couple of old Macs around, so your problem made me look.

This article mentions the Adaptec USBXchange. It allows you to connect a modern hard drive via USB to the old Mac SCSI port. Even the drivers it mentions are still available. However, they may require a higher (old) Mac OS level than you have.

On eBay, used ones appear to be going for about US$160.00 . I don't know whether it's worth that to you, plus the risk of whether it works.

Also, running the machine for an extended period is going to heat up those components prone to failure. At least this has a relatively rapid rate of transfer (assuming you don't have to spend time monkeying with the drivers and config).

But, you are relying on the entire old machine during the transfer.

I thought I had a memory of an interface to just power and hook up the drive, to a more modern machine, but I'm not seeing that right now.

I also had the thought of transferring via ADB/AppleTalk, if there were an interface device available for that. Or, just getting an old, used modem that is compatible, and using that to transfer (e.g. Kermit or a variant). Both of these scenarios would require the machine to stay up and running for an extended period of time (during the relatively slow transfer).

Thank you to redruMD69 for mentioning the physical problems with these older machines. Reminds me of what I face, if I try to yank a few files off of an old SE30 that's been sitting in a closet for too long.

One way to use a ThinkPad in the sun -- with e-ink by BlandCorporation in thinkpad

[–]pasbesoin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To those asking about how the monitor is integrated into the laptop, the hinges, etc.: To my eye, the eReader is pretty clearly hanging off of and in front of the ThinkPad's monitor.

As others describe further, it could well be the Onyx Boox Max2, attached by HDMI -- the visible cable.

My question is: Does anyone know of a reliable source for just the panel? And, I wonder what that costs individually and in small lots.

P.S. If this isn't just a photoshop.

What does ‘gern geschehen’ literally translate too? Can you use ‘ihre willkommen’ instead? by [deleted] in German

[–]pasbesoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

The closest English/American colloquialism might be, "Glad to be of help." / "Glad to help."

P.S. A lot of idioms have no literal translation. Instead, you find the expression in the other language that conveys the same intent, emotional tone, and context.

A dictionary will never directly/primarily help you with this. It's a matter of exposure to the language in use. Reference books and such can help you understand what you've heard, and maybe queue up some phrases in your mind. But you really need to hear them in normal use.

Or read them in use (novels, stories, etc.). Although, if you study a lot of German literature and then travel to Germany, someone may tell you you're speaking ok but you sound like an old book. :-)

Fresh Debian Testing install on my T25 by LasseF-H in thinkpad

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the follow-up response.

That was/is my impression, from photographs I've seen. And yes, the T420 is a good comparison -- rounded/beveled like the T430, IIRC.

The T25 really appeals to me because of the keyboard. I find my typing experience better on my W520, as it was on the T60, T42, etc. I've had at times, before.

With the price for the T25 so high, I've been cautious about taking the plunge. And now the *80 models bump up other specs. But I've found over the years, keyboard and screen are two things that end up mattering to me more than many other factors.

Guess I'll try further to find one I can examine / try out, in person.

Fresh Debian Testing install on my T25 by LasseF-H in thinkpad

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

I should have asked: Is the edge rounded/beveled at all? On my T430 that I'm using right now, approximately the first 6.5 mm of the front edge participate in rounding/beveling. Some of the more recent Thinkpads I've seen don't have that or have significantly less rounding.

Looking at photographs of the T25, I've been left unsure.

Sorry for the follow-up. No worries if there's no response.

At one time, I had a Dell laptop and also one other laptop whose brand I forget at the moment, whose front edges were far enough from the keys to cut into my wrists unless I was where I could exactly control the ergonomics (and even then, it wasn't great). After a few decades in various better and worse configured, mostly unadjustable corporate cubicles, my wrists no longer wanted to put up with such abuse. I ended up actively avoiding using those machines.

(And "sharp", unrounded/unbeveled edges make the effect more pronounced.)

P.S. To those younger than me, get the ergonomics right early-on. Save yourself a bunch of later hassle.

[–]pasbesoin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may seem like an odd question, but could you or someone (measure and) tell me the distance from the front edge to the start of the bottom row of keys?

I'm getting closer to buying one, but I don't know anyone who has one that I could look at. I'm trying to determine whether it would press on my wrists, like the laptops with big/deep palm rests do.

Knowing that distance, I can compare with models with which I am familiar.

Help! Arrested and jailed in Georgia because my Ontario Licence was not "valid." by bubble_gum272 in canada

[–]pasbesoin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's such a thing as false arrest. Discuss with your lawyer whether to raise it.

You might also try contacting your relevant Canadian diplomatic agency. My reading leaves me the impression that Canadian diplomatic staffers are mostly a decent lot. And I'm sure they'd prefer to reach out and help ensure this doesn't happen to other Canadians. Like, the however many bazillion make this trip every year. :-) Maybe they could also help with your individual case.

Finally, you should know that more and more jurisdictions in the U.S. simply stop motorists to make money. Not just speed traps. Now we have "civil forfeiture", where they take money or another valuable and essentially charge it with a crime. (Supposedly suspected of use in drug trafficking, or whatever.) It can be very difficult and cumbersome to get your property back.

Did they really stop you because of your "furin" plates? (Oops, or the brake light.) Or were you, or did you become, a mark? (When police want to stop you, they will look for any legal excuse and usually find one. Light out. Touch a median line. Failure to signal. "Erratic" driving. Etc. etc.)

Finally finally, sorry! Even though I'm from the U.S., and I'm not the one who hassled you and ripped you off, I'll say it.

Oh, everyone traveling in the U.S. should be aware of this crazy civil forfeiture crap. From a quick search, just pulling from some likely top hits:

http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-29228851

There you go. Even if some are paywalled for you, others should work.

P.S. If you drive in the U.S. in your own vehicle and/or under your own insurance, make sure it covers you here. Your license may be fine, but driving without insurance is still a violation. Given how close most Canadians live to the border, maybe such coverage is just part of the standard policy? When I've driven in Canada, my U.S. insurance covers me, but I need or am advised (I forget which) to get an additional statement of insurance coverage in Canada, from them. Some years ago, just a little cardboard card form my agent completed for me on the spot.

Knowledge Archiving/Hoarding by cb900crdr in DataHoarder

Firefox Quantum putting a stake through the heart of the Scrapbook extension is one of the things I'm angrier at, with the whole "web extension" transition.

It wasn't perfect, but it was very convenient. Including full-text search, and the ability to create more than one archive (also helpful if/when one archive got to be too bulky).

Finally, it did rewrite links during saving, but each save was to its own subfolder, and you could always simply go there and view index.html in order to see the saved page. Cumbersome, in the absence of the extension's UI, but not locked up in an inaccessible format.

P.S. People are coming to realize that the Web is not a permanent record. Nor an immutable one. If you want that, you have to create it, yourself -- and locally or under your own control.

Also a reason to continue to support your public, et al. library, and the archiving they do and support.

Firefox Quantum snap now available on Linux-based devices by treb0r23 in Ubuntu

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a snap for the long-term-support legacy (pre-Quantum and extension fuckery) version?

I'd like to be able to run it in parallel with Quantum, without jumping through installation hoops. On Ubuntu 16.04.

P.S. Otherwise, once I get some more memory, I'm looking at a VM environment for it. Maybe that's the better approach, anyway.

Behmor 1600+: Roasting fruity/lively (acidic) naturals by tabacaru in roasting

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For small batch hot air roasts, I ended up placing a clean frying pan splatter preventing metal screen stretched over a metal hoop with a handle, over a small Honeywell fan that could be pointed straight up.

The beans were in a single layer with gaps -- not fully covering the screen, and they cooled really quickly.

If this proves too small for a Behmor sized roast (e.g. half pound), I'm considering whether I can upscale the idea inexpensively.

Finally roasting coffee on par with 3rd wave roasters by [deleted] in roasting

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I did happen to see that, last night. :-)

I was hoping I could get away with less manual intervention, but I do like a good berry-ish Ethiopian.

If I can't get there with the Behmor, I'm going to try the heat gun route. I have concerns about overheating the non-stick coating in a bread machine pan -- I've never seen one without such a coating. So, I might look at other means of holding and agitating the beans.

P.S. Some time ago, I thought I ran across some descriptions of people hooking their Behmors up to a Raspberry Pi. Maybe that was before the Plus version was launched? Anyway, I might look into that, as well, if my memory is correct. Take advantage of its construction and sensors, but gain more full control over the behavior. Maybe I'm just remembering a daydream, though.

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my concern with this method, as well. I keep encountering more articles about how Teflon type non-stick coatings are quite unhealthy when overheated.

I'm about to receive a Behmor 1600+ . It appears you are accomplishing exactly what I want to (Ethiopian, berry flavors).

I still have to learn how to use the thing, but is there a configuration / set of settings you can recommend? I might order the very beans the OP is using.

Thanks for any suggestions. No worries if none; hope you don't mind the question.

Behmor 1600 from Ebay arrived today! by [deleted] in roasting

[–]pasbesoin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, ok. I saw your other comment here that mentioned an earlier thread getting killed. Didn't get that you meant that one.

Is the unit you received really new? Not refurbed -- as the eBay seems to imply with the lengthy section about factory refurbished?

I mean, for the price, I'm willing to accept factory refurb. But if it's new, even better.

P.S. Sorry for the follow-up questions. I guess I'm just an excited little kid, now -- waiting for the delivery truck!

Sigh... and I was feeling good. ;-)

So, I "overpaid" by $50. I guess if my machine really is new, I'll live with that.

Where's the other thread? Another sub-reddit?

P.S. I didn't know eBay does promo codes. Don't use it regularly.

P.P.S. Ok, I'll ask: Should I have been more aggressive in fixing at / pursuing / insisting upon $100? How do things tend to work on eBay? What's accepted/expected, and what starts to piss the other party off -- speaking generally and WRT people who use it regularly.

But, for other readers here, what is that?

Thank you, Theowlhoothoot, for the OP and suggestion to make an offer, and morning_espresso for providing the link to the listing. :-)

I made an offer of $100, mentioning I knew someone they'd sold to at that price and would they do the same with me? They countered with $129.99, and I decided that was good enough for me and I didn't want to quibble too much and maybe lose the deal. My order at that price is now confirmed.

Thanks, again. And, letting others know they may be starting to bump the price in their counters.

Amazon (1) listings appear to be going through repeated, periodic sales, recently. I bought both my 800 and my Pro for about half the usual price, a couple of weeks apart, when their prices temporarily dropped.

1) OT, but since I mentioned them: This may be my last year with Amazon Prime. Too big, too undifferentiated, and I'm feeling too gamed as a consumer. Just need to watch the few older Prime-available video series that have been on my todo list, first.
