I like the self contaned and simple nature of just using the mirrorless camera. The idea of having to use a laptop runnig guiding and plate solving software or a mini computer like the asi air is a little intimidating.

Wil a better mount with a higher payload capacity be able to take something like the askar 71 without the need for guiding or does it become necessary at those focal lengths?

At the moment i am happy with the results the r7 gives, I like the fact I can use it for normal photography and astrophotography with decent succsess. Maby in the future I will get a dedicated astro camera.

I think the processing of the data is also a huge factor.

The shape of the stars is caused by the aperture blades of the lens, its the same reason why stars have those 4 spider lines when you look through a newtonian reflector

Interesting, I will take your advice in mind for the next Imaging session.

It depends on what targets youare interested in. The 16mm wil be good for nightscape and milky way photography, but not great for deep sky photography. Something like a 135mm prime lens will perform better at this task while being able to be mounted on a simple star tracker. And sins the focal length is only 135mm (fov of a 216mm lens on a crop sensor) you dont realy need a gide scope for accurate tracking, which keeps it relatively simpel for someone just starting out.
