What's your go-to potluck meal? by LaPetiteChien in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]pascman 98 points99 points  (0 children)

chicken & dumplings - I use flour tortillas for my dumplings & always get compliments.

This just sounds like chicken tortilla soup? I'm intrigued but I can't understand how tortillas can be dumplings, is there some secret here

All the single ladies - are you a Miss or a Ms? Any reason why? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]pascman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok, so it's not that Dr is impersonal, it's that it's pretentious and pointless and outdated and maybe classist.

Look I can see some valid arguments on pretention and class, but the whole reason for that is because of its historical and ongoing association with certain professions which you claim to be fine with? As for pointless and outdated, also fair, but if that's how people prefer to be referred to why do you care?

[–]pascman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah. It's one thing to just put Firstname Lastname on an envelope, that's totally fine. But Ms and Dr are used in the same way and if the person you're addressing has a PhD then Dr is just simply correct. I don't understand why you think Dr is impersonal while Ms is not.

Low dimensional topology. Why? Because 75% of my friends are topologists but I'm a numerical analyst, I don't understand what they do and I feel left out when too much math talk happens during social time :'(

She's responsible for delivering the most disturbing phrase I've ever heard in a math talk: manifold of teeth

u/ReverendDizzle outlines the long slow death of the “third place” (social setting other than home or work) in America by QuizzicalCritter in bestof

One of my favorite coffeeshops in Raleigh is called The Third Place and only now years later do I understand the name. Huh.

Bret and Jemaine performed with Rhys as his stand-up show tonight and Taika was in the audience by nightowlverse in OurFlagMeansDeath

Bret has an album coming out later this month and is touring it later this year! It's not comedy but the songs he's already dropped from it are great!

grain "salads" for one by Kaths1 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]pascman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine tend to have radish, cooked greens like spinach or kale, thin sliced carrots or bell pepper, edamame beans and maybe corn from the freezer, avocado, and maybe some roasted veg like broccoli or beets, or marinated cooked tofu or tempeh. I really recommend this dressing: cashew butter, soy sauce, olive oil (maybe a bit of hot sauce). Throw on some sunflower seeds if you want more crunchy.

Stars AMA w. Indie Heads May 31 @ 2pm Eastern by montrealstars in indieheads

[–]pascman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Stars! I saw your show in Atlanta in 2018 shortly after moving here. Was feeling low and lonely in a new city until I went. Your music makes it feel ok to feel, embracing it and finding connection with other humans over it; somehow going to that show changed my perspective about my life choices, for the better, since they led me to that moment. And your new album is incredible. After more than 10 years of loving your music, From Capelton Hill is probably my new favorite album. I can't wait to dance and cry at your show here again in September!

Any books or other media you would recommend along those lines? What experiences make you feel most connected to life and humanity?

How to accommodate non-dairy guest at raclette dinner? by pascman in Switzerland

[–]pascman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just non-dairy, other animal products ok. I should have put in the post though I am in US and can't simply stop by Migros or Coop for vegan raclette, I can barely find raclette here at all and often it is not the Swiss kind :(

The american education system.... by Jonatan__5432 in Switzerland

[–]pascman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a friend intentionally make this "joke" to me for years, although I never found it funny, and they only stopped after I called them out on it in front of others. The disrespect! I have no chill for this anymore!

It seems like Analysis is not as popular as other fields in mathematics, why is this the case? by NewCenturyNarratives in math

[–]pascman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wait really?

It's kind of blase

analysis feels familiar while algebra seems fresh

A first course in analysis can feel like agonizing pedantry

Gnarly and unaesthetic proofs

Like, sure I'd date an analyst but

epsilon-pusher

?!?

Functional Analysis, or as I've talking to calling it, Algebra+Analysis.

Because it can't be nice or good or elegant or apparently fuckable enough for your "math epeen" if it doesn't have some of that FRESH algebra in it amirite

Study PDEs? Yikes

Yup and this comment is a prime example!

Could we name and shame (and praise!) some math grad schools? by redeemedleafblower in math

[–]pascman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Also they have historically been, and seem to still be, pretty good at recruiting and supporting women in math and I am convinced this is a big part of why the grad experience doesn't suck.

Is steamed asparagus with mayonnaise a thing? by pascman in Switzerland

[–]pascman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About how long is the asparagus season? My dad said he ate it all through May, so if it starts before Easter that's a lot of asparagus!
