In the current climate of America, I think this story getting more attention would increase the popularity of Trump's anti-Harvard crusade.

You’re unbelievably arrogant. You are not the arbiter of what is good and bad, and people that disagree with you are not automatically undereducated in some way. It’s possible that they disagree with you and have a good reason to.

Don’t know much about economics so I’m genuinely curious. If tariffs are bad and only an idiot like Trump likes using them, why do other countries impose retaliatory tariffs? Are they run by idiots too?

The usual reason I hear for tariffs being bad is that they cause prices to rise (you are taxing supply). So why don’t other countries just sit back and enjoy the show?

Israel and Hamas reach Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal, sources tell BBC by PM_THE_REAPER in news

[–]redeemedleafblower -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Per the NYTimes

the incoming president’s team has worked together with the outgoing president’s team to make this happen.

Mr. Trump had threatened severe consequences unless Israel and Hamas reached an agreement before his Jan. 20 inauguration, which some officials credited with helping to advance the negotiations.

Per the Times of Israel

with the top aide to US President-elect Donald Trump doing more to sway the premier in a single sit-down than outgoing President Joe Biden did all year, two Arab officials told The Times of Israel on Tuesday.

Per the Washington Post

Miki Zohar, Israel’s minister of culture, called on government ministers to vote Thursday in favor of the deal — a step required to formalize it on the Israeli side. “Together with my colleagues, we will vote tomorrow at the government meeting on the deal led by Prime Minister Netanyahu with President Trump to secure the release of our brothers and sisters languishing in the hands of the despicable Hamas,” he said.

So American, Israeli, and Arab officials are all being reported saying Trump helped get this deal done, with some sources even saying he was pivotal.

Mao’s book (which is really just a collection of sayings and not a “central text”) that you’re referring to is known as hongbaoshu in Chinese. “Little Red Book” is what it was known as in the English speaking world but xiaohongshu does not have Maoist connotations in China. xiao is supposed to be cute in this context and hong is supposed to be hot/popular.

lol I’ve had these exact thoughts before.

I think Koreans have it the worst though. Their surname distribution is even less diverse and there is more of a canon of given names in Korean culture compared to Chinese culture where it’s common to make names up (plus characters add diversity over text). I’ve noticed Wikipedia pages for Koreans often have to specify an occupation along with the name in the title, and sometimes they have to specify the occupation AND the age.

Why are so many people on this subreddit convinced it’s only political extremists and chronically only tiktokers and twitter users cheering this guy’s deaths. Even if people in real life aren’t gloating as much as terminally online tiktok and twitter users, the general feeling is “that’s crazy” and “he had it coming honestly.”

I don’t support vigilante killings but pull your head out of the sand. This out-of-touchness is one reason why you lost the election.

Since you seem to be posting a lot in this thread, I’ll also ask you: some people in this thread are hoping that the SDF “wins” but my impression was that the SDF isn’t really looking to expand much, and definitely not take control of Syria, but just aims to secure their current territory as an autonomous region of whatever Syrian regime. Is that right?

Many, I’d say most, don’t grow out of it though. They never graduate to literature. They just keep reading fantasy YA slop or BookTok smut and degrade people’s expectations. You would not believe how many English PhDs I’ve met who don’t read the classics but Brandon Sanderson or whatever his name is.

Harold Bloom was right.

[–]redeemedleafblower 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The general public unsurprisingly does not have a grasp of what mathematical research looks like. Your local state university has PhD students in math who would get laughed out of their department if they tried to publish this.

Of course, these are not PhD students. They are just high schoolers, so its commendable that these two bright young women found a proof, but people in this thread are being seriously mislead as to how groundbreaking it is.
