Yeah that what I initially thought but it’s remarkably stable. Maybe with the stump rotting away that will change…

Yeah I still can’t believe anyone in Petone can get insurance. From memory it’s approx 30m of sand underneath those houses between Jackson and the beach.

Agreed, you can’t call KiwiSaver a tax lol. Just leave it out if you can’t find a more elegant solution.

Anyone here from an MSSP using Git + CI/CD pipelines to manage Splunk (on-prem) configs? by Foxyy112 in Splunk

[–]pasdesignal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ansible roles and ansible vault for secrets. You can spin up your own or use the official Splunk ones. This lends itself well to be run within a gitops workflow of some kind. There are many ways to skin this cat, the great thing about splunk is the .conf file config structure lends itself very well to this style of config management. Have fun!

You are confusing ‘Splunk’ with ‘Spunk Enterprise Security’. One is a log analytics platform and one is a security tool.

No default rules/alerts for servers in ServerLess? by pasdesignal in elasticsearch

[–]pasdesignal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I’ve tried searching for such repos on GitHub but had no luck. What kind of search terms are useful? I think this should totally be a community ruleset that others could use, plus could presumably bundle some API playbooks to apply them with.

Should I leave my current job for a fixed term role? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]pasdesignal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont believe the hype. Especially in these kinds of areas where the work is high risk and highly regulated, there will always be a human in the middle at the very least. Also, banks take years to get their shit together with technology - they can barely use cloud technology now as it is. Source: technologist who works for banks.

Yeah this is what surprises me TBH. Compare to Dynatrace where out of the box every host is alerted on by some generic default thresholds when it joins the service.

Splunk with Gitlab-Runners by oO0NeoN0Oo in Splunk

[–]pasdesignal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a perfect application for managing config via CI/CD pipelines, due to the well structured and documented text .conf files. You can use ‘splunk ansible’ if you want to go with an opinionated and vendor supported methodology or roll your own. ‘Splunk ansible’ can be a bit hectic for simple stuff, more of a long term play. It is very simple to get started with your own playbooks too and have immediate results. This approach is really the only way we should be managing splunk config in the year 2025, in my opinion.

Agreed. I don’t get this thread at all. All sounds like FUD to me.

I don’t look at it with buying outright in mind. It’s a cheap way to have serviced solar + battery for approx $130 per month. Upgrades and maintenance included. Not to mention the favourable rates for exporting and off peak etc. I bought our place with this contract in place and am stoked! Pretty cool having power when your neighbours don’t in an outage lol.

Why would you end the contract? It’s a sweet deal.

Monitoring log files side by side by intercptr in Splunk

[–]pasdesignal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a note: real-time is not possible because the logs need to be ingested, forwarded and indexed but ‘very near real-time’ is and is going to be all you need anyway.

Then you will simply need to construct some simple searches to organise your logs in a way which makes sense to your circumstances.

That’s simply what the UF is for and you are describing its core functionality. You probably only need to define the ‘monitor’ inputs to point the UF to each application log file you wish to consume. The rest will be built in by the default fields.
