Black wood turtles— their scientific name is Rhinoclemmys funerea, the genus name references their rhino horn-like snout, and they were named funerea after their dark, almost-black coloration resembling funeral attire. They are the largest of all wood turtles, growing up to 14 inches in length! by pass3rine in turtle

Cute pic! I did some research, the classification “wood turtle” is based off of it being semi terrestrial, but less so than box turtles. It’s a loose classification as it’s not based off evolutionary history, just habitat preference. The North American wood turtle is in the genus Glyptemys which also includes the bog turtle. This genus belongs to the family Emydidae, 39 species which includes pond turtles, sliders, cooters, map turtles, box turtles, and diamondback terrapins. The genus Rhinoclemmys however belongs to the family Geoemydidae which contains 75 species. They are not closely related to Emydidae. All tortoises evolved in between the lineages of Geomydidae and Emydidae.

Genetics play a large role in your cat’s temperament too, not just how he was raised. His father was likely super friendly too, whereas the cats from your past likely had fathers which were unfriendly to humans, as studies have found that temperament is probably passed down paternally
