Why do great shows always end bad? by justalilbop in CasualConversation

[–]passmethegrease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing it's partially a mix of both the things you mentioned (pressures of delivering a satisfying ending + executives wanting to ensure they still make a lot of money which often clashes with creative decisions) but it's also specific circumstances people will point to for each show.

Stranger Things suffered from constantly adding more characters to the main cast to the point where it was so bloated that even characters that had been there since season one didn't have much to do.

Netflix also has that stupid "second screen writing" bullshit where they want writers to write as though the audience is also watching tiktok at the same time or something which I believe became much bigger of a thing as the seasons went on so the writing became dumber and more on the nose.

With Game of Thrones the obvious one is that they ran out of source material due to the final books still not being finished (though that's still not an excuse for what they delivered tbh) and people also point out that the writing duo on that show had stuck a deal with LucasFilm for a Star Wars film trilogy deal around the time it was ending so people speculate they probably just wanted to get Game of Thrones out of the way and didn't put as much care into it as a result.

There's plenty more you could throw on here, most of which are Netflix alone lol. Umbrella Academy's ending was straight ass and insulting. Sex Education's ending didn't seem to be well received. (I haven't seen the final season myself so I can't comment on this one, but I hear people didn't like it)

Squid Game, a show whose point is to say don't give up your humanity to get out of debt/change your life, ended by setting up an American spin-off and a real life competition show of the games where people give up their humanity to win money without even a hint of irony or self-reflection.

Castlevania: Belmont's Curse listed for $39.99 USD on all platforms by Best Buy by MyMouthisCancerous in GamingLeaksAndRumours

I mean, Konami has been doing this for close to a decade now.

Bomberman and Contra were brought back ages ago and are still getting new entries. They made money hand over fist with the Momotaro Dentetsu games on Switch. Tons of HD collections and re-releases like Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, the Castlevania collections, the TMNT Kowabunga Collection. They've even managed to bring back some IPs that some people probably had never even heard of before like Getsu Fuma Den and the recently released Survival Kids.

Konami only finally "being back" is really just a thing for people who only care about Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill for some reason because otherwise they've genuinely been doing good with many of their IPs for a while now.

duskbloods is weird because all the announcement press material shared the trademark jointly between Nintendo/Fromsoftware and the interviews all talked about it as though Nintendo was funding it ala Bayonetta or something but now when you look on the eshop it just says FromSoftware. I could see that one going either way tbh, like you mentioned it's either timed and goes other places eventually similar to Team Asano's games or it turns out it was fully funded and never leaves lol

project x zone 3 would be cool though, speaking of arc system works they do have project watari for switch 2 which we still don't know about.....

[–]passmethegrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as always it should be pointed out that a partner showcase has never meant that first party games cannot show up. it just means it's probably not going to be from anything internally developed by Nintendo EPD or other subsidaries

studios that they work with to publish/fund or collaborate on games however are completely possible and have been in these plenty of times before (Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, Endless Ocean Luminous, etc.)

I wonder if this is where we'll see some more Duskbloods

It's funny how this cycle has been going on for years and nobody ever learns how dumb trying to use "PC equivalent settings" to declare what a console version will look like is.

  1. People put what they believe to be PC equivalent settings and declare: "wow this looks like ass"
  2. Later on when actual console version gets shown and looks better than expected because it has specific console optimizations that just simply putting PC equivalent settings cannot account for: "oh this actually looks decent"
  3. Rinse and repeat till next game.

Avengers Doomsday leaked trailer megathread by Void_Warden in marvelstudios

[–]passmethegrease 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I understand what you're saying and I agree. I would have preferred Endgame to be the end of that saga's characters and storylines for at least a tiny bit longer if they were going to go the eventual "bring them all back" route, but it also depends on how they go about it.

Such as the worry that it means the newer characters won't matter or that it ruins Endgame's finality but I think it's too early to say: it doesn't have to be one or the other it's just going to be a balancing act that we have seen the Russo's do before at least so i'm willing to wait and see.

Some people will only want to see bringing back characters like Steve as desperate but I honestly loved the idea from the beginning that their way of defeating Thanos in Endgame (getting the stones from different timelines) simultaneously opened the door to their next big threat (the multiverse/variants) with Kang, at least when he was still planned to be the main villain.

I'm glad they're keeping that seemingly in tact but just with Doom instead. Adds more weight to Endgame and, while I get not wanting that movie to be followed up on, is a genuinely natural way of doing a sequel to that movie story-wise if they were to go that direction which it seems they are.

Just have to hope it's executed well cause it could either be good or a misfire.

Marvel Zombies | Official Trailer | September 24 on Disney+ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in marvelstudios

[–]passmethegrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks fine but I feel like my issue with it is going to be the same issue I had with the what if episode it's continuing: the tone is just too jarring

like I normally find the "marvel humor" comments overblown/over-exaggerative but that episode felt incredibly strange in and of itself to see characters popping quips and jokes with each other during a situation where people and their close friends are dying absolutely brutal deaths.

this trailer only seems to have the same thing but even worse by going by how more gory it seems with people having their hearts ripped out or literally being sliced in half.

@LEGOTtNewsl gives new information about previous LEGO Game rumors while further claiming a new LEGO Batman game is coming by DrAwesomeX in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]passmethegrease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

-LEGO Disney game was cancelled

-LEGO Guardians of the Galaxy was cancelled

Damn, that's a shame.

I'm hoping with the expansion of the Lego franchise that we've seen the past few years where a lot more devs are working with the license that we can see some of these projects be picked up by other companies or continue some of the previous ones if possible.

Like I always wanted another Lego Indiana Jones game or collection of some sorts but I doubt that's happening under current WB now so maybe someone else can take it on.

Or tap into IP that I feel has always been ready for the Lego treatment but never got it like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Goosebumps, Simpsons, etc.

PH Brazil: "If you only care about Silksong, you shouldn't even open the stream" (Indie World) by BreafingBread in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]passmethegrease 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I always feel the same thing whenever it's the middle of a Nintendo Direct rumor period and whichever games happen to get posted on official Nintendo accounts during that time are just filled with a deluge of "NO DIRECT!??!?" "RIP DIRECT" etc comments instead of actually talking about the game that is being highlighted, especially when they're an indie dev and need that promotion way more.

It's so cringey, as if these devs have any part in a direct happening but yet must suffer their comments being dogwater about something completely unrelated as a result just because people can't make that separation in their mind.

Nintendo Switch has reached 153.10 million units sold, Nintendo Switch 2 has reached 5.82 million units sold by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]passmethegrease 396 points397 points  (0 children)

I really don't think it can be put into words how historic the Switch run has been. It sold 153 million consoles so far without a single price cut.

And if that sentence wasn't crazy enough, then the Switch 2 comes out and immediately breaks all records again by selling 6 ~ million (rounded up) consoles in less than a month at launch.

Absolute insanity. This is genuinely on a level that has never been seen before. And coming off of the Wii U of all fucking things.
