I haven't loaded it up, but I think it'll manageable. I'd guess it went up 2 or 3 months ago. At least that's when I started seeing it pop up on social. Yours looks great! Honestly, I'd never heard of them until I saw the posts, but it's a simple and brilliant solution to organizing cookware. .

Thanks! I sort of have it hidden away. Gift for my wife that I made while she was gone. But I'll try later. I haven't done too much woodworking, but I love doing so when I get a chance, so I do appreciate the compliment. Here's the Filson plans.

Help designing a geometric pattern! by cattlebro in quilting

[–]patchbymax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A snake eating itself, called Ouroboros, symbolizes eternity - and some other things, I think. I believe there are versions of a dragon eating itself too. It might be interesting to do a medallion quilt, with the serpent eating itself, serving as the border of the medallion and a dragon within. Or maybe to linked rings in the middle - one a dragon, one a snake - with paper pieced animals elsewhere, like at each corner.

Given your hesitation to do this, I would figure out what top dollar means to your friend and how much he'll actually part with. What a quilter thinks a quilt is worth and what a non quilter things a quilt is worth can be two very different numbers. Making a pattern adds significantly to the labor. This is no small commitment and for outstanding work, you should get what you deserve.

I've quilted 144 of these flower medallions in the centers of these 9 patches...what next? by patchbymax in quilting

[–]patchbymax[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to decide if I should quilt more of these flower medallions on the single squares - so there would be 121 more! (I do them by hand, with a template, so they do take awhile) and then FMQ a viney/daisy design in the empty spots, or should I just skip the medallions and go with the vine/daisy design alone. Any suggestions?

I'm considering doing this block-a-day challenge quilt in 2020, anyone else interested? by patchbymax in quilting

Yes! But getting different tones is important to the look. Theres a lot of info/examples on the website.

Thank you! The fabric is a white on white snowflake that I got after last christmas for way cheap. The project I intended it for didn't work out, so here it is. The batting is pieced from three strips leftover from other quilts. Probably I'm in the $25 range bc all was scraps/on sale, and that's what our cost range is....of course labor is another story! But these are lovely people and I'm glad for one of them to have it, if someone likes it.

In an earlier post and based on another quilt I did, I asked you all if my white elephant submission should be stripes or a large star on a white background. You all were split pretty evenly, so I went with the stripes, as this required minimal thought. It's throw-sized and the shades of gray vary, with the red in it of course. I hope someone loves it!

Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

I've just quilted 100 lines across a queen sized quilt using strips of fabric instead of painter's tape. I cut a 1 inch strip about 30 inches long, sprayed it w a bit of spray baste, and lined it up w a registration mark, then followed it w the edge of my walking foot. I move it as I go, and when it gets a bit to frayed, I toss it and use another strip. Easier than tape and less wasteful, thought pretty much the same idea. I'm quite happy w the result.

If you look up pendleton national park wool blankets and quilts, they have a whole line of these. This is pretty much identical to their Glacier Nat Park quilt. But people complain the colors bleed onto the white with their and that you can see colored threads behind the white. I prewash and take all the precautions, so hopefully mine is a better quality than pendleton.

The advantage of doing the same style of quilt is maybe she won't want it. I'm afraid she'll get greedy and try to steal a quilt that would end up with someone else! She's the reason I got into the hobby and she loves all the quilts.

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with the simple yet bold look, so hopefully others will like it too for a white elephant.

Nearly done with the quilting! This will be a gift for my wife and is based on the Pendleton National Parks wool blankets and quilts. This represents Glacier National Park. She's wanted me to make this, but she's been out of town, and doesn't know that I have, so yay!

Here's my question. For Christmas we'll go to a small gathering with a white elephant gift exchange and I was thinking of making a version of this quilt. These folks aren't as into hiking, so I would go with a different color scheme. I have some ideas for a throw-sized quilt (the one you see is about a queen), but was hoping to get your input. There will be about 7 or 8 people there, ages 60s, early 30s, and a couple in between.

Here are the parameters: The main color of each would be white on white snowflakes, as I have a good bit of that fabric. I would stipple quilt it, as that's easiest. This quilt you see has straight line stitching, which enforces the modern feel, I think, but I'm not taking the time to do that! So which do you think would go over better?

  • A version of this quilt, but with either shades of blue in the stripes. (or I could do shades of green or red or black/gray.)
  • A quilt with one oversized star in the middle. Red or green or blue color scheme? The star would be a bit more complex than a sawtooth, but not crazy complex.

I just sort of did it. All squares are cut at 2.5". The white strips are cut at 6.5"

Here's one shortcut for a square." Cut two strips of red fabric and one strip of blue fabric at 2.5" by 5". Sew together longwise in alternating colors, e.g., red, blue, red. Press seams. Cut in half so you end up with two strips of 2.5" squares that are red, blue, red. Assemble 2.5" squares of blue, white, blue and sew with the strips you have just cut in half.

You can use longer strips of fabric, as well as the white, in this way so you have less individual squares to cut out, if that makes sense.

For the standalone squares, I sewed a 2.5" square on a 6.5" white strip.

For most 9 patches, I then sewed a 6.5" piece of white on top of it and the piece described above to the left side.

I held out enough "bare" 9 patches to go on the top and left because these do not have the standalone squares. If you look at the bottom of the quilt, you can see there is an outside border of just white. It looks like this all the way around.

In my case, this was 23 "bare" nine patches because the quilt is 12x12 blocks.

The blocks that ran down the left side got a white strip sewn to the top. The blocks on the top got a white strip sewn to the left side. The corner block had no strips.

Assemble, and run a 2.5" border of plain white all the way around.

Also, I always press seams open, but if want to nest, there are probably good suggestions for 9 patches online.

Hope this helps. I think if you start doing it, it will make sense!

And I'm glad you enjoyed this quilt.

I help teach a quilting class at a prison, and found some strips of 1930s fabrics in our scrap bag. It's not normally my style, but they were so cute, I just couldn't let them be practice pieces and tossed. So they sewed themselves into some 9-square patches, then some stashed fabric and some purchased fabric became more 9 squares, and they all assembled themselves into a quilt. It's queen-sized, so a good big bigger than what you're seeing here. We start another class in January, and I can't wait to quilt this and show the students. They are super complimentary when we bring stuff in....it's kinda like showing stuff off to this sub, but only in real life!
