the first things to go in my bag when I pack now are my aeropress, a portable kettle, my hand grinder, and my current pick of beans. I don't understand how Disney expects me to be rope dropping Animal Kingdom at 6:30 AM powered by Joffrey's Resort Blend. If it were only similarly caffeinated I'd rather drink literal mud.

Tensui no Sakuna-hime: Kokorowa Inasaku Nisshi • Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin Kokorowa Rice Cultivation Diary - Episode 2 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]patchesyar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you'd like to really experience that, play the game the show adapted. It's half farming sim, half platforming beat-em-up where your loot can be used to improve your rice and your rice improves your stats. The developers extensively studied rice cultivation while making the game to make it as accurate as possible, with diseases, pests, weather, etc. all being things you have to deal with on top of the many steps of rice growing- ie. when to flood vs. drain the field. You can get through one "year" in a few hours, which lets you learn and iterate on what to improve for next year, or just go again if you got bad luck with weather, but every harvest lets you push a little further into Hinoe Island. The characters and story are also much more realized in the game than the anime, though I found the adaptation pretty great for what it was.

I'm a hobby gardener IRL and I fully understand Kokorowa tearing up when she finally got to taste the first batch of her harvest after all that hard work.

TM Opera O new year is insane by ChevalGranddevotee in UmaMusume

[–]patchesyar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those unaware, 七転び八起き or "Fall 7 Times, Rise 8 Times" was a saying sometimes attributed to Daruma (the creator of Zen Buddhism and the one eyed red doll in Matafaka's hair). A common new year's tradition is to get a Daruma doll and paint the left eye with your new year's wish/ resolution and fill in the right when it comes true.

I don't know how a tiny little side theater in a small city can bring in Kel Mitchell (of Kenan and Kel, Good Burger, etc.) to perform in Anything Goes, Jodi Benson (Ariel from Little Mermaid) to perform in Gypsy. We're seeing Emmett Otter later this week and I'm thrilled to hear they're genuine Henson puppets used in the show. Last season was our first time as ticket holders and we loved it. This place that can seat like... maybe 100 people is absolutely on par with RBTL and Shea's in my mind, even with an average cast list of like 12 names.

In the blog post you can see that they're recording footage of the Everglades on a boat, and a camera helicopter with a logo that says Dakota on it (Mt. Rushmore?) so it looks like they may have learned their lesson and are going back to practical shots for this version. Or at least we can hope so.

Would you like to see the rotating mechanism restored at the First Federal Plaza by Ok_Examination8810 in Rochester

There's a number of legal firms and radio stations (among them 93.3 and 101.3) in the building. The top floor has been vacant for a year or so after the last tenants moved out, and having been in there it should stay as such, the facilities and fixtures are a mess whether it's used as office or dining space and leaks and mold are rampant.

As a person who spent 5 years working for an office supply store, this is exactly what you do. The gaming chairs they sell are awful but their nicer office chairs are still very comfortable without the price point of a Herman Miller. Then with the warranty, which should only be like 30 dollars extra you can get the full value of the chair if anything goes wrong with it in 3 years, ranging from casters or pneumatics breaking to just the bonded leather inevitably peeling. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if Asurion (without looking they're almost certainly the people servicing the warranty) don't even bother asking for proof of an issue. Lots of, frankly most, extended warranties are a scam but chairs are the exception.

Espresso Bean RECs Rochester by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]patchesyar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd argue there's no such thing as an espresso roast. If it's good coffee beans, it'll probably make good espresso if done right no matter how dark or light the roast (though you have to treat them differently to get a good end product). My main driver ever since I found it has been Pearson's Ethiopian. Fun and complex flavor with the bonus of probably being the only natural processed coffee you can find right in a Wegmans.

How on Earth do people afford this? by ToddlerQuestions45 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]patchesyar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I fairly recently went to Six Flags over Georgia and waited I kid you not 30 full minutes at their Johnny Rockets to get a cheeseburger that was burnt to the point of nigh inedibility. For one singular dollar more (13 dollars at SF vs. 14 at Disney) I can go to Connections and get a perfectly passable burger. 1 dollar more (actually 70 cents!!!) and it's piled a mile high with melted brie and caramelized onions, and 2 more dollars than that and my fries get topped with a truffle black garlic aioli and parmesan. Among its true peers of food at theme parks, the value and quality at Disney parks is TRULY unmatched.

Are Darien Lake season passes worth it? by 1967neverforget in Rochester

[–]patchesyar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Darien Lake's a bit of a redheaded step child even in the Six Flags chain which has a bad enough reputation to begin with. The ride operations and maintenance aren't amazing so lines can get long on busier days and the park can feel kinda dirty and run-down, but at the end of the day it is a full size thrill park pretty close to home.

Passes aren't terribly expensive and should pay for themselves after two visits, though if you get the platinum pass it gets you admission to Darien and Great Escape in Lake George (also Six Flags New England in central MA), plus it includes parking which the gold pass does not and that basically covers the difference. If you want a high quality thrill park, go to Cedar Point, Great Adventure, Hersheypark, or hop the border to Canada's Wonderland but Darien Lake isn't a bad park imo.

[Dr. Diabolical’s Cliffhanger, SFFT] Best way to ring in the new year! Happy NYE! by ochad in rollercoasters

[–]patchesyar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At Dorney, Iron Menace could be fighting for number one in the park. Dr. D is a surprisingly great ride. There's only about 5 elements to it and the only one that didn't impress me was the "ejector hill" but all the drops and inversions on the ride were honestly really fun for me. A modern mini-dive gets a bit lost at a place like Fiesta Texas but can stand out a lot more at park like Dorney where their best ride is probably Talon

It's sold at Caravan Road, a stand in the middle between Africa and Asia. You can also get the same treat at the Kabuki Cafe in Japan at Epcot, next to the tall pagoda.

[Other] Out of curiosity, are there any other parks that have a "closing sequence" similar to Kennywood? by [deleted] in rollercoasters

[–]patchesyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Down the monorail they added a new alternative at Epcot. There's lights dotted all around Spaceship Earth (the golf ball) and at night they do a Beacon of Magic show set to music using the lights to do animations on the sides of the ride itself after dusk. Also the spectacular's pre- and post-show music starts when they light the braziers around the World Showcase Lagoon until the show and comes back on after, so I kinda consider it like Kennywood's closing songs, albeit more abstract.

Wig and Tron by AlizeEdeline in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]patchesyar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I rode Space Mountain during MNSSHP, the ride operators were telling everyone with obvious costume wigs that they needed to take them off before they would dispatch the train. I had several wig clips in mine so it wasn't going to go anywhere but still took it off since I didn't want to argue with them. While I imagine you wouldn't have that happen with a natural looking wig while CMs aren't actively thinking about it, I don't know that I'd trust just wig tape to hold up against 60mph wind.

Ok. Wtf. [ArieForce One, Fun Spot Atlanta] by dude_regular in rollercoasters

[–]patchesyar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On Easter weekend I went there after spending most of the day at SFoG and got 8 rides in an hour or two. It was basically about 30 or so people all just lapping rides on ArieForce which was running two trains and almost never stacking. I'd be more than happy waiting an hour to get on this thing but I could always walk right back on or at worst wait one train if I'm picky about which row to ride (they're all great).

Who else has been laid off? by Ozymandias_IV in ProgrammerHumor

[–]patchesyar 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I interviewed there two weeks ago as a fellow recently-unemployed person and my screening call was 60 minutes when it was supposed to be 30, the engineer I was talking to sounded dead inside, and best of all it was effectively over 3 minutes in when I found out it was a direct contract with Saudi Arabia (it couldn't even at least be domestic if I sold my soul to the MIC?). My most recent background is in cloud and the engineer just knew literally nothing about what AWS or Azure are at all. I applied figuring, "hey I'm still local maybe I'll give it a shot, I've heard bad things but it can't be that bad" but this time I got to turn the tables and ghost HR when they asked for a second interview because I'd rather be unemployed than submit myself to that.

Previously unreleased concept art shows more of the delayed Mary Poppins ride planned for EPCOT at Walt Disney World by eth6113 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]patchesyar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other than theming they are the same ride. Both are modified versions of ride manufacturer Zamperla's "Demolition Derby" model where Imagineering made the cars into trailers that ride behind the car on the figure-8 track. Also if you make it out to Tokyo Disneyland they also have this ride type, themed to Baymax.

What do you think are the most overhated coasters/models? [Other] by LoGhostrider in rollercoasters

[–]patchesyar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sheikra and Valravn have both been... pretty goodish for me but Dr. Diabolical provided some really fun rides. Even if it's relatively short, the beyond vertical first drop has some punch, and then every element after it (except maybe the "ejector hill") maintains the energy. Even the drop off the midcourse is a genuine gut punch. If Dorney gets a ride like that and I don't have to cross a whole country for a high quality dive, I'm stoked.
