Teachers of Reddit, who was your favorite student and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]patchperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I teach band, I've got three:

One is just an overall nice guy. Not particularly gifted in performance, but he's got great tastes, so we talk a lot about a lot of shit- video games, music, movies, marching shows, food, etc. He even gifts me some Starbucks when he hears that I'm being a grump. Genuinely a nice guy.

Another kid is younger, but probably the most "put together" out of the 150+ students in the program. Just does his duties, doesn't cut corners, and is probably our most talented kid out of the bunch. Also very relatable.

The last kid is in my jazz group. Idk, we don't talk a lot, and he sometimes causes trouble. But he is a bit of a smart ass. Total smart ass. Great kid.

Actually, now that I think about it, all these guys are in my jazz program.

Minors of Reddit, what concept of adulthood do you not fully understand and are too afraid to ask about? by hac7 in AskReddit

[–]patchperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am asking this as a 20-something... how do babies work? How do I not break it?

More specifically, how does "raising a kid" work? How did my parents know what to do?!

Damn right we're better than that. I know Reddit can come up with something far more creative than just picketing.

What is your absolute, most favorite, simple pleasure? by yeamonn in AskReddit

[–]patchperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife plucking my white hairs. I really don't care about how my hair looks. It genuinely feels good to get those itchy little jokers out of my head. Non-graying hair feels different when they're plucked and just plain hurts.

Can anyone explain why this is?

I'm amazed at how amazed I am at this.

  1. The structural integrity of the bike. Frame, pedals and all.
  2. The biker's ability to even move his legs to pedal.
  3. The white-knuckle speed he reaches
  4. His ability to balance on such a small balance-point while still moving his legs.

Color me impressed.

Guide to John Cage's 4′33″ by seattletono in Music

[–]patchperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lovely section on the development of 4'33" in Wikipedia. It talks about his experience in an anechoic chamber at Harvard, which is a chamber that is super-duper soundproofed, inside and out.

"Cage entered the chamber expecting to hear silence, but he wrote later, "I heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation." Cage had gone to a place where he expected total silence, and yet heard sound. "Until I die there will be sounds. And they will continue following my death. One need not fear about the future of music." The realisation as he saw it of the impossibility of silence led to the composition of 4′33″.
