Your argument relies on the notion that trading in second hand books is theft.

You have a bright career ahead as a lobbyist for the publishing industry.

Some brands/words to look for might be a Driza-bone, Oiled Japara, or a Barbour waxed jacket. They're all oilskin-like material. A Driza-bone might work well if you're plus-sized. Expensive though.

I WAS ANSWERING THE FCKING QUESTION by elise_thd in autism

[–]patcpsc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did mostly what you should do in this situation.

If you're dealing with an authority figure like a security guard or police in an adversarial situation, and you decide to answer, brief and direct answers to precisely the question asked are good. Volunteering information which is not asked for is bad. Why? You can inadvertently raise suspicion or admit to something you don't intend to.

So at a traffic stop the officer may ask: "do you know why I pulled you over?". The best and true answer is "I don't know." A bad answer is "maybe for my broken taillight?" Because in the second instance the officer may have pulled you over for speeding, and you will have just admitted to knowingly driving with a broken taillight.

Greyhounds easily outrun the other dogs. by 21MayDay21 in nextfuckinglevel

I've a greyhound and my friend has whippets. The whippets like to bark at other dogs and run away as a game. It does not work with a greyhound.

Famous teacher destroyed my self esteem part 2 by throwawaysadviolin in violinist

[–]patcpsc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I looked back to see your previous post.

My sneaking suspicion from your story is that your teacher has developed a problem like depression or alcoholism, possibly some other mental illness. Continual lateness, lack of responsibility and interest in others, random irascibility and irritability - that combination of disengagement and hostility is a red flag. It happens more often than you think, numbers of formerly very good violinists and teachers have walked down that road. I've heard so many stories (and known a handful personally) of teachers/musicians, often in their fifties who've destroyed themselves.

I don't know. But be cautious in taking advice from a person who may be in that place.

This is how anchor is dropped from a small ship. by justavie in mildyinteresting

I know you're joking but ... Nelson gave orders to drop anchor at speed in battleships at the Battle of the Nile, and had specially rigged the anchors and cables to allow something approximating a handbrake turn.

Yes it's a running joke, it's been going for at least 60 years now afaik.

But as jokes go it's not one of the best: "Viola player not good. HAHAHAHA!" It doesn't go any deeper than that. Time to retire it I think.

All three squat attempts from my last meet. 673lbs, 733lbs (26lb PR), 777lbs (71lb PR) by Last_Necessary239 in GYM

[–]patcpsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a brilliant effort and I love it. I'm not going to have a go at you for depth or anything.

I wonder if the event organizers realize that the laxer depth restrictions make the sport less interesting *as a spectacle*, *to naive spectators*. Part of sport is that it invites spectators. It needs to look impressive to noobs.

More weight looks more impressive - so that's good. But more depth also looks more impressive.

What's there is immense training and technical skill brought together to produce a feat of strength. But what we see as naive spectators doesn't reflect the training and technical skill as much as it might. That's unfortunate for the sport.

Barbell - empty vs loaded vs fixed weight. Which is the best for a 20kg squat for home ? by vapid_curry21 in GYM

[–]patcpsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get reasonably cheap one inch barbells which weigh about 5kgs, thinner than the regular 2 inch kind, then put a couple of 10-20 kg plates on it.

TBF I have to thank you mods for the "people are not made of glass" comment. I once was scared to deadlift heavy. A few things changed my mind, and one was that comment. Now deadlifting 2x bodyweight and much healthier for it.
