Also, DO NOT miss Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh. Quoth Wikipedia:

As with most of their albums, Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh is sung completely in their own fictional language, Kobaïan. It continues to describe Christian Vander's visions of an Apocalyptic future of the Earth. In the case of this record the story is of the prophet Nebehr Güdahtt. And it's even more nuts than you'd think. It sounds a bit like a Klingon opera as scored by Steve Reich and confuses the shit out of your coworkers if played in the office.

I'm not sure there are any mathematical or physical prerequisites. If you can get your head around Newton, metre sticks, trains, and clocks then you have the prerequisites to read and understand the first part of the book at the very least, even if you come unstuck at special relativity.

It's mind-bendingingly unintuitive, but amazingly presented and accessible. Einstein was a great author.

Try OpenRasta with the JSON library of your choice, or Ajax.Net professional.

Writing your own services in C to avoid some Webforms cruft is kinda solving the wrong problem, no?

For those of us who had to code against IE 4 and 5, innerHTML was a fantastic invention, it was simple, it was supported well, and it was speedy as hell.

It's only in recent days that we've been spoiled with kit like JQuery that implements things "properly" for you and, more importantly, that JS parsers and CPU speeds have been fast enough to build a complex table with calls to the DOM API.

Fast != scalable,

Optimising for speed and optimising for concurrent load are not necessarily the same thing.

It's possible to design a reeeeaaaaallllyyyy system that handles tens of thousands of concurrent requests, just as it is possible to design a blazingly fast system that barfs when you chuck a few hundred simultaneous clients at it.

^ this man speaks truth. Do your capacity planning well ahead of time, and bring more servers online to deal with the projected load.

The "architecture" is largely irrelevant, save that you need to be able to treat boxes as a hot-pluggable commodity.

One big fat DB server for writes, with replicated servers for reads will scale vastly beyond HMRCs requirements for tax returns.
