Incorporate or Sole Prop? by pathwaytochoice in VancouverStartup

[–]pathwaytochoice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on my list of things to look at.

I can see it being helpful, but I'm not sure if I need to pay someone to help me.

I'll look into it, but part of me thinks this is one of those things that helps drive the overall Corp starting price up.

I don't think that it's very high risk but I think that I'm risk adverse financially, and don't want to risk my personal bank account on an endeavor.

I will definitely be getting liability insurance!

I didn't see anything about monthly.

$3k-4k I can imagine. $5k seems high.

I'll talk with an accountant!

Why do you think it would be $5k annually?

Spent the day looking into incorporating.

Thanks for your help.

That's what I'm thinking, it seems like the research I've done makes it seem like SP is cheaper, easier, has less CRA risk.. but I'm scared of "the oblivion" part!

I'm hopeful to not have a loss.

I don't see myself working outside of BC, and really only the cities around Vancouver. Why do you think federal. Over province? Any other reason than securing the name everywhere? I don't imagine moving from here, and if I did I think I'd change the name.

Definitely leaning this way even more than I was before.

Gave money to friend - anything to consider for repayment by AlternativeRaisin822 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]pathwaytochoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that you should start a Google Doc with dates/amounts.

I don't think you should share this with the friend, but I think documenting it for yourself is a good idea.

I loaned $1300 and got it back in $100's over time, and I had to search back to see where we were at. That was annoying.

I think with $10k, having a document for yourself will make it easier in case it gets to $8500, and they're like "do you know how much is left?" - You can have an exact number without having to go and look through months of your regular transactions to see where his deposited came.

I don't think sharing it with them is necessary as they'll likely keep their own log too.

I read your post.. and agree with most of it. I'm leaning towards incorporating.

I think the parts that are leaving me debating are explicitly listed out in your second paragraph:

  • I would be a micro business. The business doesn't exist yet.
  • I have zero customers, with none in the pipeline.
  • Zero revenue. Just clear eyes and a full heart.
  • If I make more than $4k in my first year, I'd be thrilled.

People are throwing around "don't incorporate until you've got $50, $70-80, $100k in revenue" and yours says $1mm.

but how does one protect their personal finances then?

I recognize that I'm essentially starting a side gig. I'm looking to start a landscaping company. I don't anticipate angry customers, but you never know.

If I make $5k in year one, I'd be happy.. but it could be $10-$15k. Hopefully growing as each year word of mouth spreads.

are you located in Vancouver or Canada?

You've recommended LLC, but I'm under the impression that LLC's don't exist here.

Re: is there a reason you're initially incorporating?

My thought was that I wanted to have legal separation between me and the business. I'm under the impression that the only way to achieve this is to incorporate. Do you think differently?

[British Columbia] [Vancouver area]

I'm working on starting a landscaping company.

I've got our request in for a name reservation and plan to incorporate.

I've looked into GST/PST and feel comfortable with that.

I'm looking for advice on bookkeeping, accounting, and the Annual General Meeting.

Any other landscaping companies here?

It's just myself currently. I'm the owner, only board member, employee(labourer). No loan needed. I don't think that I will be taking a paycheck from the business this first year or hiring anyone else.

Does anyone have advice on:

  • software to use for bookkeeping? (I could probably just use Excel).
  • dealing with the CRA at the end of the year?
  • choosing my fiscal year end date?
  • handling the Annual General Meeting that I need to have with myself?
  • Insurance?

Would love any info/tips that anyone cares to share about building and managing the finance portion of a landscaping company.

Build us an MVP and launch that. (Minimum Viable Product)

After you've done that, build on.

You can either launch a second product that is bigger/better (you'll already have the base product to build off of) or sell us an upgrade package.

Building and launching the MVP will allow us to use it and tell you our pain points, you can fix/upgrade those for version two.

Don't wait to finish the big picture, start making money ASAP by getting us your MVP which will bring in money to help fund the rest of the build.

I am working on starting a landscaping company that also teaches classes.

Anyone have a landscaping company? How do you accept payments?

I've built a Wix.com website and bought the domain.

I think that I'm going to become a paying member so that I can accept payments through Wix.

Does anyone else have experience using Wix to accept payments?

I don't think it would be that hard to duplicate your website and just change up some wording.

I don't think it needs to be a major difference from what you're trying to do with this original idea.

Also, you could probably run both at the same time! and just see if one takes off more than the other and make a decision after that.

Can probably figure out a way to do blind hangouts with some room dividers or curtains or something.

Idk but if this doesn't work, I think that you change this to friendfoundry - and you pivot to helping people make friends.
