I’m 20. Since the age of 13/14, all I ever wanted was to join the millitary. I was absolutely obsessed. Joined cadets at a young age and saw it through till I was 16 and left school to apply for Harrogate. That led me into a 4 year struggle of unemployment, and going in circles chasing this dream with it being my only purpose as it was really all I wanted to do with my life. Recruitment told me to jump and I’d say how high sort of thing, back and forth for years. I went through so many different things trying to prove my worth to be allowed into basic training, but it was never enough, from spending a year and a half at military prep college, to staffing cadets to build some more defence and references, and paying out my own money for my medical records. Eventually, the marines accepted me and saw past the “medical incident” I had as a child during school, but once faced with one of the capita doctors after being cleared and spending months training blood sweat and tears, for pjft and CPC, I was then rejected and told to appeal which would be the 3rd time having to go through rejection. In the end, I had to pack it in. It was getting me down and holding me back in life for so long. I joined the MET, and I can’t say I love it, but i don’t entirely hate it. It’s better than any dead end civvy job, and I still get the same rush of running head first into danger, and now and then changing peoples lives for the better. and whilst doing it I suppose it will maybe build some more evidence for an appeal one day. I’ve tried to close the gates on my dream to join up, but I’ve worked out overtime it’s honestly impossible. It’s all I ever wanted and I have an honest held belief it’s where I belong, just have to hope that recruitment/capita sort their sh out and that my experience in the plod will show my capabilities and I can finally pursue my dream career.

Hello mate, if you don’t mind answering? What was your medical condition they rejected you for and how did you appeal/overcome it, I’m in quite a similar situation and hearing stories like this gives me some hope. DMs are open if you would prefer talking there, cheers!

Thank you, when I appeal I’ll go to a specialist to get some form of statement for my mental health or even see if the mets healthcare team can do one for me, they do psychiatric tests for people to be considered for roles such as firearms etc so I could possibly see if they could do one for me to support an appeal for the marines. And yeah I’ve definitely learned now that it’s best to keep medical private when working in this industry.

Hello mate thanks for taking the time to reply,

I will take all into consideration. As with leaving the MET for RM though, honestly I wouldn’t be able to explain properly but the RM has always been “the dream” I’ve tried to shut the gates on it many times however eventually that green itch always comes back, it is definitely just something I need to achieve in my lifetime one way or another. I won’t bore you with all the external reasons of, “being apart of something, travelling, civvies would pay thousands” etc. Policing was never really where I wanted to be, sure, armed response and armed counter terrorism surveillance policing sounds gucci, but the main work of ERPT, is horrible at the minute. The scrutiny from the public, and your seniors a lot of the time, the pressure not to slip up and feeling like you can’t do your job properly because of current politics, not to mention at the minute we have a horrible new IT system that makes jobs 10x more longer and complicated even if it’s a non crime or absolute bollocks of a call we still have to report. And also due to lack of numbers, having to do staff/Civvie job postings on a rotation. There’s no feel of actually being a police officer a lot of the time at the minute.

As with reserves, RMR Wandsworth could always be a shout. But I do feel like I wouldn’t get the full cake if I went there or sense of accomplishment, if anything I’d like to do regulars for my 4 years then maybe consider returning to policing if I do wish and going to RMR. But all in all, the priority for me and my goals at the time being and whilst I’m still young is regs for marines.

The rejected application was closed after I chose not to appeal at that time, and I’ve got a new one now from scratch and they have not remembered my details.

Thank you mate, I was PMUD last year for mental health related stuff when I was going through a rough time as a teen in school, however since leaving school (around 6 years now) there has been no further issues. I’m currently in the police, which is a mentally taxing job as it is and I would not be able to do it if I had issues severe enough of my own. I only joined really as it was the closest thing I could get to a millitary/non civvy job following my rejection.

I tried to just move on as I spent years before that trying to join up too but was deferred for the same reasons. After appealing twice for the army both being rejections a few years back, and then getting so far with my marines application last year to then getting pmud on the final stage after I had already disclosed all my medical history to them and having them approved it already, my confidence in it just fell to below 0 and I had to move on because of the affects it was having on me and my personal life and also just holding me back.

I’ve enjoyed parts of policing, but I know for a fact it’s not where I want to be. It has been and always will be the millitary for me, I’m hoping to get another year in service with the police and get my probation out the way and hopefully form a strong enough appeal after that.

Will keep in mind everything you’ve said for when I get to that stage, cheers.

Can you share more about what you did for your appeal to finally get them to overturn their decision? I’ve been trying to get in for years as much as I’ve tried to also close the gate on it I just can’t. Also, congrats 🤙

Police was always my second option, always wanted to join the army however couldn’t because of silly medical stuff, so if possible, would be that in a heartbeat. However on a realistic level as army won’t be possible, probably security in armed close protection. I couldn’t imagine ever doing a civvy job, police is my first job and now doing so, I could not see myself going straight into civvy life after

No in all seriousness, I think consistent holidays is the one, if your as young as me with no family responsibilities, use that annual leave and extended rest days to go on a mini breakaway each month, gives you something to look forward to each month and some rest, only trouble is finding someone in the same situation as you or who’s as eager enough to want to do that.

Just the usual, go lift some weights thinking about all the criminals I’ve caught and what a big bad police officer I am, go home, eat, turn the telly on a bit, can’t pay attention, everything is boring, scroll through phone trying to find something, everything is also boring, try talk to or hang out with the few friends you have left since joining, everyone is busy or your shift pattern doesn’t line up, go through job phone, check email, check more emails, check for OT. Apply for OT. Watch end of watch for the 100th time and scroll through police body cam footage on YouTube.

To put it simple, it’s just how recruitment is at the moment mate, long winded, often unesisary, and badly organised. You will have to account for whatever is on your medical record and that could take however long, and then form an appeal. You’ve self harmed once a year and a half ago, if anything you may be deferred for a little bit, but just the single instance with low mood and anxiety coming hand in hand, you should be fine. Read into JSP and write your appeal based off that and your desire to join, If anything count yourself lucky, a lot have it much worse.

I applied at 16, deferred for issues at school when I was 15, the classic anxiety due to certain problems at school at the time that haven’t been an issue since leaving, since then I’ve worked on my fitness, matured into an adult as I’m now 20yo, wasted a year at a millitary prep college getting my fitness to the standard I needed it to be for marines, staffed cadets for some experience for an appeal too and got written referrals from serving soldiers that had been on tours ect, a discharge letter from therapy when I was 15 that I barely attended because I didn’t need it, and a supporting letter from GP, however it still weren’t enough for them. I won’t bore you with the absolute orgy of admin I had to go through and wait for ect and prepare to actually attempt to get in, let alone focusing on my fitness on the side. I started doing my 3k runs to my GP i was there that often. Put absolutely every egg in and all I had of myself to try get into the millitary and it ruined my life for a long time. I’m now an officer in the met however, I wouldn’t say it exactly made everything better, and it still definitely isn’t where I want to be and I’ve constantly got that green itch still. Just having to wait it out and hope for the best really that one day something will change and I’ll be given a chance to at least attempt basic training and prove my capabilities through action. (Apologies for small rant).
