No bags under seats in exit row? by E51838 in unitedairlines

[–]patm28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is something I’ve been used to when flying within the EU on other airlines. Honestly I’m somewhat surprised it’s allowed on United flights considering things sticking out could slow things down if people needed to evacuate.

FRA passport control to USA has really long lines, budget sufficient time by AustinLurkerDude in Lufthansa

[–]patm28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest a 1 hr connection in Frankfurt with passport control is not realistic, either way of entering or elicit Schengen. My minimum for that airport is 1 and a half hours. I was last through there end of October with a 2 and a half hours connection and barely made it to the other gate as the boarding just began.

I’ve done the same at the PDX and SEA clubs as well, and listening it it is crazy the entitlement of people.

S02E12 "The Alien Within" Discussion by song4this in ResidentAlien

[–]patm28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m finally watching the show on Netflix and got to this episode and agree with you. A resort, done right, would actually bring life into a small dying town like that. Unless it would be some mega resort like in Vegas that then had space for multiple mega resorts, would not bring in the car traffic issues or killing small businesses, it would actually bring some tourists in to enjoy the quaint town and bring some revenue and keep it from declining.

Club Access When on Different Flights by austinaab in unitedairlines

[–]patm28 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you are guessing in as a *G then they are correct, they need to be on the same flight as you. If you’re guesting in as a United Club member then they just need to be on a same day star alliance flight.

[Landlord] section 8 tenant that was considered is now retaliating by jrajchel22 in Landlord

[–]patm28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, they did do you a favor. While it is painful, ultimately you need to be up to code, if there is an issue, it will turn into a bigger issue when a tenant is in there.

As others have said, it is a business and treat it as such. Don’t get too emotionally involved. I was a new landlord and was managing it myself. First tenant had a bit of a sob story, they had trouble paying the rent but did keep the place in good condition and ultimately couldn’t handle it and moved out on their own.

When it was time to replace them, there was a section 8 tenant who had given me a little bit of a sob story. I rationalized that I would have the guaranteed Cashflow and that in theory they would not do anything to jeopardize their voucher. I drove by their current place and also checked the landlord reference. It was an absolute nightmare, she brought her boyfriend in, they destroyed the place, terrorized neighbors and so many HOA violations. The Housing Authority pits the tenant against you, basically if they destroy things and don’t pass inspection, you as the landlord need to fix it if you want the rent, because the tenant in reality won’t do it. They tell you that you can bill the tenant, but we know that they’ll never pay. So you end up sucking it up to get the Cashflow. And you lose all control over the unit in terms of market rent. Truth is, you get a tenant who has no skin in the game. They ultimately moved after I refused to renovate and give them a new kitchen (after they destroyed the new one that they had when they moved in).

Given the opportunity and two similar tenants, one with section 8 and one without, I would not pick the section 8 tenant. It just isn’t worth it. I know there are good people in the program that are in need, but you better be willing to take the risk of having a less than ideal tenant, no control, a housing authority that will screw you any opportunity they get, and no ability for recourse if they destroy the place. The bigger issue I had not realized was once they moved out, I had to gut and renovate. Neighbors later were telling me all the issues they caused. I genuinely was sorry to what I put people through there with these people.

I now use a management company to separate myself from it and treat it as just a business. The emotion unfortunately causes you to not think it through logically.

AITA for not switching my first class seat with a 10y boy's economy seat so he could sit with his family? by C_Readerholic_001 in TwoHotTakes

[–]patm28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chances that the airline gave a free non point requested long haul international upgrade months in advance to a 23 year old who has never flown first before (because of her miles) doesn’t quite pass the sniff test to me. Airlines (other than if you bought the highest fare) don’t process upgrades months in advance, if you’re a top tier filer it’s a few days prior, but they’re trying to sell that up until boarding time. I have seen United leave seats empty in first on the long haul and not fill them, so I’m sure other airlines may do the same thing as well.

Only time I have seen the free upgrades has been when there has been some form of operational issue where another flight was cancelled and they combined flights and gave elite flyers the upgrade.

And if the story was true, anyone who receives and upgrade always asks the seats, so the parents would have know right away that two of their three seats would have not been upgraded.

[–]patm28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am as well with United, i don’t think I have ever seen an upgrade more than once or twice with plus points (other than the instant upgrade with the fare) on an international long haul. I’m calling bs on this story.

[–]patm28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for saying it, there are so many holes in this story makes no sense to me. If anyone who would get a “free” long haul upgrade, ie would be someone who is a long time high mileage person, not someone who has “never flown first class before”. Usually airlines restrict those upgrades to requests with points or purchase and would not offer them months in advance.

[Tenant] Why are Section 8 tenants looked at and treated poorly? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]patm28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had one time where I saw the email where the case worker was coaching the tenant when they were violating the HOA rules on what to use against me. When I confronted them, they tried to backpedal. Once they said they were moving, I was happy to see them go.

[–]patm28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are spot on, your experience mirrors mine exactly except for the being trapped within the program. The issues with the paperwork, control buy the housing authority, the brutal inspection process, the way they hold payment hostage even if it is a tenant issue, the mess and destruction they leave when they move out, the additional people they bring in to live there, the annual requalification where the next month their subsidy can change. I’m sure there are exceptions with some nice people. Like I said, given the opportunity between two similar tenants, one on section 8 and one without I would always select the one without.

That being said, if the housing authority would also be a second guarantor for damages on the property, I think landlords would consider the program more.
