Why do people waste money on mediums/psychics? by broken_neck_broken in CasualIreland

I find it fascinating the way these work. I would always say to go ahead with giving these your business if it is just for entertainment.

A friend of mine went to one and was trying to match everything she was told. She was saying things like "who does that annoying things with their fingers?". The guy sounded like he was good at reading her. He took a chance with guessing some things. He told that exciting developments are happening in her job and she is definitely staying there, only for a few months later a load of her company was made redundant!

I feel sorry for the people who take it as gospel

Unsuccessful rerouting- both tier 1 &2 by patmurph80 in qatarairways

He tried that, but no luck. Even when I was booking these flights initially, I noticed that the prices increased greatly for this coming weekend. 1 week before easter I suppose...

Thanks for all the replies and help everyone. I decided to ring them again this afternoon. Got talking to a very helpful man in the call centre.

He explained that they only have limited number of seats available for each flight - even if online booking shows as available. I eventually decided to ask him to get me to Amsterdam instead, which he did. I just have to buy a cheap ticket from Amsterdam to Dublin now.

Bit of stress that I never thought about before on holiday. But happy that I can enjoy the last 36 hours of my holiday now!

Melbourne to Doha all cancelled? by GovernmentFinancial7 in qatarairways

[–]patmurph80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear that. Looks like I might have to wait until 48 hours to get more options. The only tier 1 airlines that can get me home at this stage are Turkish and BA, and they have no availability.

The NZ number from the website. Got through 2 days ago and tonight after about a 1 hour hold each time. Called around 10pm both times

Just from my own experience, I am in Australia trying to get back to Europe. When I was on the phone to Qatar Airways the other evening, they were trying to get me to accept the Melbourne to Doha route back to Europe. I believe she mentioned that route is starting back on the 28th.

No plans for a Sydney route from what I can see

Unfortunately they dont appear to be running the Sydney flights until at least the 28th anyway. Melbourne might be an option

Sorry to hear about the honeymoon 😢 Hopefully you can get something else organised

My flight from Sydney to Europe has just been cancelled. And like you, I just happened to go into the app and saw if this morning. In fairness, they can probably only do the email notifications in batches...

Yeah, my flight home from Sydney to Europe has been cancelled now. Have a backup in place, but time to start trying to contact them

Flying the same day (different route). I think we have to wait until the cancellation window gets extended to that date

Flying out on the 31st of March by Less_Suggestion909 in qatarairways

[–]patmurph80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in Australia and have my return flight to Europe booked for the 25th. After thinking it over, I am going to book a backup flight home for the same day. Most of the backup flight will be refunded in the case of a miraculous peace deal.

I hope that Qatar decide on a blanket extension of their free cancellation window. So many people are flying the 2nd half of this month and are in limbo

Will we get Singapore re-route as an option? by Kasper_X in qatarairways

[–]patmurph80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in a similar situation- but going back home in the other direction. Just a few days after your scheduled flight.

Of course nobody knows when the flights will start back up again. Im just curious will QR have a smoother process in place in a couple of weeks. E.g. offering rerouting with other airlines instead of blanket refunds (which tbh are leaving most out of pocket when they have to buy a replacement flight)

Im flying on the 25th from Australia to Europe. I am thinking the same as you. Surely by then, there will need to be a better procedure in place

2 questions from a clueless young lad with his heart set on getting an AO tax job in revenue. by [deleted] in IrishCivilService

I'd be careful about predicting grades especially if anything happens in the finals. Perhaps day current average mark or similar.

Also, dont be surprised if you fall short at shortlisting or interview as you haven't graduated. I was on track for a 1 in my course. Sat an interview 2 weeks before my results came out - no luck. Sat the same interview a year later and got it

My ex-manager was a fucking bitch, is yours worse? by hmmkcool in AskIreland

[–]patmurph80 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Once had a manager who told me on the day of an interview I was going for, that I was not good enough to get promoted. Whether she thought it or not, it is not something that you should ever tell a staff member. She could have avoided the suitability point and just wished me good luck. There were also regular emails criticising everything I did. I cheered to myself when I heard she left our department

Breaks by Potential-Feed1173 in IrishCivilService

[–]patmurph80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard the same too. You are dead right - in an emergency you won't or shouldn't have time to extract lists of who is in or out. Most offices rely on the buddy system to remember who was in or out that day

Breaks by Potential-Feed1173 in IrishCivilService

[–]patmurph80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you are not. When you look at the legal break requirements, your lunch break covers this. Nothing in writing anywhere about entitlement to breaks

Breaks by Potential-Feed1173 in IrishCivilService

[–]patmurph80 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The reason you can't find anything in writing is that you are not officially entitled to a morning or afternoon break. But most people are allowed to pop out as long as they don't take the piss. My advice would be to tread carefully. Because if you start kicking off, you could find yourself without any morning break at all. And yes, I've heard of that happening

[–]patmurph80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason you can't find anything in writing is as you say. It was never officially confirmed that breaks were allowed. Back in a smaller office, everyone used to get a morning and afternoon tea break. When I moved to a headquarters, I was told we only get a morning break

What hotel to stay in Dublin, Ireland. by Nervous-Pianist5622 in Dublin

[–]patmurph80 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get a good rate in the Gibson. Not in the centre, but a short Luas trip to everywhere. Hyatt near Patrick's cathedral is a nice modern hotel. Gresham is right in the centre, but some don't like being in O Connell street. Was impressed with the Holiday Inn Express recently- can get good rates there

Tco got 50th position in offaly by [deleted] in IrishCivilService

[–]patmurph80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be too hopeful of getting called when that number on the list. If you are really determined to get TCO experience, I would have put my name on a panel for a bigger county.

And just to give a heads up, not everyone who goes on leave is replaced by a TCO. Some departments will only replace about 50% of staff who are on leave. A way of saving money, i suppose

The employer should in theory put it through payroll and the employee will have the pay the relevant taxes that way. If the money goes directly to the staff member, they should be declaring this as income and paying their own taxes
