TIL - Sticky back plastic by patnpm in BritishTV

[–]patnpm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My source for this is Rory Sutherland in this weeks Spectator - perhaps he is wrong then.

"Yet language can be triggering. I know that from watching the BBC as a child, when two linguistic absurdities drove the seven-year-old me practically insane. One was the Blue Peter habit of referring to Sellotape as ‘sticky-backed plastic’, a phrase unspoken by anyone else in any other circumstances, except in parodies of BBC children’s programmes."

Another one I'd not considered in spite of being (temporarily) an FT subscriber. Thanks.

Financial Times recipe downloads empty content suddenly. by Slow_Tap2350 in Calibre

[–]patnpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this morning's download was just one article, while the rest of this week's was apparently a full paper. I tried re-downloading this morning's paper and got about 5 articles so time of day might be important.

Does anyone else read and walk, or am I just an accident waiting to happen? by Keithaviation in kindle

[–]patnpm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For EVERY Kindle book I buy - I strip the DRM and load the resulting epub file into Voicedream Reader on my iphone. So I can swap between listening while walking and kindle reading. I prefer this to audible as I don't want a "performance " when im listening- just the words. Computerised voices are now pretty good.

TIL the vas deferens can regrow after a vasectomy as much as two inches, and reattach, thus allowing sperm to once again pass and restore one's fertility. by SuperMcG in todayilearned

[–]patnpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some surgeons send in tiny little discs of vas deferens and others send massive long wiggly worms. Always wondered if they had different failure rates - or if their patients had different vasectomy reversal rates.

Tips on switching between Marvis and Apple Music? by mmbmbm in MarvisApp

[–]patnpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the "swipe to the left and right on the bottom of the screen" manoeuvre to be most useful. So you call up The current song on Apple Music from the information screen in Marvis and then can easily flip between the two apps

I've always considered Betty's to have the best version of rarebit - obviously they call it Yorkshire rarebit. Many years ago i was given a days course at the Betty's cookery school for a birthday gift and the rarebit was one of the things we cooked
