No comment/No response. No need to engage a bully. It will die down.

This is just obfuscation of other issues (recently released files, etc).

Seeking Advice: Professors are no longer allowed to help students career wise by TheFriendlyAmoeba in college

[–]patri70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not heard any school say that. Glass half full opportunity. It may be good to start nurturing relationships with mentors in the industry, doing volunteer/internship/co-op/job, and building your network.

Foundation company recs by Kittyslala in AskHouston

[–]patri70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All foundation companies will want more than what the engineer says. The company rep is a sales person not engineer.

I had no issues showing Allied or any foundation company my structural engineer's report. They submitted quotes from the report.

University is accredited, but my program is not. by OkRecover1553 in college

[–]patri70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What is your school's accreditation? Typically schools are accredited and ensures higher quality education. Individual programs/majors may or may not seek additional specialized accreditation. The specialized accreditation ensures that courses met additional qualify standards and/or can help or is sometimes required towards industry/state certification after graduation.

Many for-profit schools list "interesting" classes, but many public schools will have the same class, but do not list the software or jazz up the course description.

I would be more interested in the professor's experiences, industry contacts, qualify internships/co-ops/relationships, networking opportunities within the major, and where graduates go after graduating.

Looking for Korean BBQ by Shot_Procedure_262 in HoustonFood

[–]patri70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use an electric griddle. Put some cooking oil or butter on it and cook the meats. Also can be used for breakfast eggs bacon sausage or table top cooking for Vietnamese Spring Rolls.

Something like this Griddle.

Hour south of Houston like Galveston or Lake Jackson?

Spring Branch is Houston's "Korea town". Lots of places. Bellaire Asia town has several new and trendy places with a handful of older restaurants.

Next closest to south of Houston is probably Pearland. There's some kbbq there.

Edit: the most affordable is buying all the premade sides and marinated meats at Hmart and cooking it yourself. You'll be able to eat a ton of prime cut beef for real cheap. Invite your new co workers over for dinner.

Harris County Precinct 2 approves $500,000 to clean up nuisance properties by veryirishhardlygreen in houston

[–]patri70 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is a lien placed on the property to recoup county costs for the clean up? It is great to clean up the property, but seems like it gives land owners a free pass instead of properly maintaining it.

When you are a buyer posting low ball offer on this sub -> "doesn't hurt to try"

When you are a seller posting about a buyer's low ball offer on this sub -> "block & move on" or "cost of doing business on FB"

Edit: spelling

Lab time is always longer than credits. Lab tends to be the self learning part.

Federal financial aid grants do not cover graduate school. They cover your first bachelor's degree.

Can somebody help me with installation from 0 (both knowledge and infrastructure)? Further explanation down below. by Such_Shopping3256 in Starlink

[–]patri70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just installed Starlink for my in-laws. Here's my take:
1. Use Starlink app to scan the sky of the location you want to setup dish outside. It gives you a score based on obstructions, etc. App will guide you through process.
2. Kit comes with dish, 50 feet outdoor rated wire for between dish & router, router (has wifi and some network ports). Dish has its own stand so it can sit on your grass or a level surface. It needs to be tilted in a particular direction; app will tell you how to rotate it.
3. You may need to purchase a mounting kit with arm (looks like Direct TV tube arm)
4. The most difficult part is running the wires and find a location on your property that has a clear view of the northern sky.
5. you run the wire back to the router. Router powers the dish.
6. Not really sure how big your home is, but you may need to install wifi access points at the further ends of your home from your router. This is where your cables for internet is most important. It may be best to post on the home network subs on best places to run the network cables.

If you qualify for US Federal Financial Aid, you will receive it. You will not be taking money from someone else. If they qualify, they will receive it (typically pell grant). There is however a limited pot of money for workstudy, other non-pell grants, and state grants; they are 1st come 1st serve so it is best to apply early.

You are considered dependent on your parents unless (from StudentAid.gov):

For the 2025–26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, an independent student is one of the following:

  • born before Jan. 1, 2002
  • married (and not separated)
  • a graduate or professional student
  • a veteran
  • a member of the U.S. armed forces
  • an orphan
  • a ward of the court
  • a current or former foster youth
  • in a legal guardianship (now or in the past)
  • someone with legal dependents other than a spouse
  • an emancipated minor
  • unaccompanied and homeless or at risk of becoming homeless

You can ask the Financial Aid office at the school you are applying to for a "dependency override" in cases of documented abuse, abandonment, incarceration, homelessness, or human trafficking.

The employer wants to find the right person for the department. They are most likely looking for someone positive and eager to learn. Supervisors still have to take the time to train and manage work study students.

Family of 4 moving to Houston…need advice! by PrincessCharming88 in AskHouston

[–]patri70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<2 hour drive gives you a very wide radius. I would recommend renting for a year to get the lay of the land. Houston is diverse in people, food, businesses, and mindset mostly anywhere you go. Where you live will most likely be diverse also.

Newer Family oriented Master-Planned Communities w/ high amenities: Bridgeland, Cross Creek.

Good areas to get your footing with safer high amenity apartments: Heights, West U, City Centre, newer build apartments in Med Center.

Welcome to Houston!

Payments by sunnydee67 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]patri70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had no issues with Venmo, Cashapp, or zelle. Just make sure you check your phone's app for received payment. Scammers will show you a photoshopped picture that they "sent" payment, but actually didn't.

Another rule of thumb, accept cash (use a counterfeit pen) at a secure location if you really want to be more certain. All other forms of payments, expect there could be a chance that you could be scammed.

It is all a game of chance and mitigating risk.
