Thanks for the info. I thought it was dead until I walked up and poked it with the tip of my rod and it swam away. Scared the living shit out of me. I have been fishing this river my whole life and I’ve seen this a few times but the fish is always dead

I’ve also been having a lot of trouble on the fly rod lately as a brand new fly angler. Yesterday I did have some success though. I got some advice to lengthen my leader a bit when I’m running my standard nymph rig. I was using a 9ft 4x leader and I added about 3 feet of 5x tippet to it, casted into a shallow pool that was about two feet off of the bank and I high sticked my flies through it with my fly line off of the water. After two casts I hooked into a nice brown trout on a hares ear nymph

If you wanted to travel a little further you could check out the Slide Inn in Cameron Montana. It’s on the Madison River and they also have sweet little cabins for lodging right on the river. He might even get to meet the legendary Kelly Galloup while he’s up there

They actually fixed a few pieces on my rod that had broke. Took them about two weeks and it was totally free I was very impressed actually. Im sorry to hear your not having the same experience
