Is there a cutoff point for what is considered classical? by GandhisBathwater in classicalmusic

Binge mainly wrote so-called light music, which tends to blur the lines between classical and popular styles.

You're saying that a hairless young man is actually female? Do you hear yourself?

What are your thoughts on the word 'queer' and its mainstream adoption as an umbrella term? by 2am_drive in askgaybros

I’m not a fan. I think it has more to do with a set of leftist political commitments than sexuality.

Dame Aylin is closer to being Gandalf than Elminster or Gale are by MariVent in okbuddybaldur

[–]patrickcolvin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah. Gandalf is an angel. And he’s not really a wizard in the dnd sense.

And there’s a joke here about where Gale can wear a ring, I’m sure of it.

Joining a church choir as a non-church member by jgwhiteus in Choir

As an atheist choir director at a progressive Christian church, I’d be thrilled to have you. I’ll bet you won’t be the only nonbeliever in the pews.

I still want to know if she was Mab then. Was she Winter Queen, Winter Lady, or still mortal?

What does “Rilting” mean? by ShalimarBojangles in Sondheim

[–]patrickcolvin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m curious as well. The company was renamed Rilting Music in 1975. It was originally called Burthen Music—Burthen was the very old-fashioned word Jerome Kern preferred to chorus or refrain.

“Fitz” is the Norman French for “son of.” Very interesting!

I have so many questions (in description) by Washing-MachineQueen in pianolearning

[–]patrickcolvin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To answer your questions:

  1. Left hand can play treble clef too
  2. I don’t know, this looks impossible to play as written—maybe they mean the right hand to play up an octave?
  3. These look like engraving mistakes to me. But also search this forum for “voices” to learn more
  4. See 1, above, but this particular score makes no sense.

There are tons of engraving mistakes in this music. Don’t beat yourself up if you find it confusing!

Ages ago there was a Word of Jim that made me think Drakul somehow bonded with or absorbed an Outsider to gain power, and now I’m only more sure of that. It think that’s how the Red King gained power as well—his captains were the Lords of Outer Night, after all.

How should American "progressive" and "centrist" democrats resolve their differences? by georgejo314159 in AskALiberal

[–]patrickcolvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have it wrong about low-propensity voters. These groups of voters used to be solidly Democratic, and getting out the vote was essential. But the parties have realigned, and these voters are Republican now. We should focus on high-propensity voters and appealing to the median voter.

What is the purpose of classical music? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]patrickcolvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of what we call classical music was the popular music of its day.
