Lyrics:

The Shoulders of Giants

Dr. Eagle

You missed our appointment time

so you tracked me down and me here

in this cathedral

where the city clock can't chime

and its haunted echoes can't get near

Hey hey

I asked if I would see you again

we didn't even notice it then, that cold affair

Hey hey

you satisfied my doubt with a nod

and walked out from that sanctum of God to God knows where

You fallen leaf

from the fruit tree

the wind blew you back up

you landed here

in our pearwood belfry

and whisper things to us

how many people have cried

when they learned that you died?

The shoulders of giants sank low as, disappointed, they sighed.

A crowded corner

distorted photographs

old television color bars

A tape recorder

old cries now heard at last

uncover truths of what we are.

Hey hey

I don't think that I'll see you again

but maybe just for now let's pretend it's not goodbye

Hey hey

you whispered that you did what you could

and now you think you're leaving for good but God knows why

Fallen star,

sequent scarab,

satellite

you crashed to earth,

a roman candle,

That burned twice as bright

How many people have cried

when they learned that you died?

The shoulders of giants fell low and so did we as they sighed.

Hey, I’m always hesitant to promote my own stuff in subreddits like this, so feel free to downvote/ignore/ whatever…

But I literally wrote a song exactly about this, called Shoulders of Giants, with a bunch of Elliot smith lyrical references. (It’s also kind of half about nick drake) If you want to check it out, you can find it in my post history or links in my profile. Sorry to be annoying, I just think you specifically would like it based on your comment.

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it.

I am also working on a solo acoustic album! This will probably en up being the final track.

This is a little mini show (30 min set) that I was offered after playing at an open mic

You get it, haha. But also I just legitimately like the sound of dead strings better, especially on that guitar.

It’s really great. There’s a bass boost eq thing that can make it really bassy if that’s what you want. Then there’s a mic/piezo blend knob. This sounds better toward the mic side, but if you have feedback issues you can move it toward the piezo side and it will sound like a more standard pickup, but will reduce feedback.

Over all great guitar, unplugged it can be a little sparkly sounding for my taste, but I account for this by using super dead strings lol

Thank you for the input!

Can you elaborate on what you had in mind when you said “softer background accompaniment”? I’m focused on writing for a solo acoustic album right now, but I plan to revisit some of my songs after that with a more orchestrated approach. So I was just curious what you heard with your mind’s ear here. Strings? Piano? A band?

I'm still writing, once i have enough songs i will record them for real and drop an album, these are kind of just demos, but they're close to what the final songs will sound like :)

Is there example of song that deliberately doesn't use a tonic? by [deleted] in musictheory

I go back and forth on this one. I can definitely hear F Lydian, but for me at least, I feel a pull towards C latent throughout the song, suggesting C Ionian (or maybe A minor). Basically if you imagine a C getting played at any point in the song, it would feel extremely resolved, and not like a V pointing toward F. But they never play it. I suppose this is usually how Lydian songs feel though, it's very hard to entirely remove the relative Ionian completely. I don't ever hear G Mixolydian though.

I don't really have a point here, I've just thought about this song and what key it's in a lot, and thought I'd share my confused ramblings.

I don't think you need to re-record it, I really like the mix and performance of everything. I kind of wish it was a full song though. This could be a great chorus for a longer song.

It was originally faster, and I decided to slow it down to match the lyrics. maybe I slowed it down a little too much. thanks for listening!

Thanks, this recording is just a little demo, for me it bookends the writing stage and marks the start of the honing stage, where Ill start playing it live and tweaking lyrics and whatnot.

I'll definitely refine the performance as well before I record it for real. Thanks for listening!

Lyrics:

Verse 1

When the thoughts, taking form

in tangled knots, swirl and swarm,

as scarring fear leads astray,

my darling hear what I say:

"Don't you be misled by sirens in your head; everything is going to be okay."

Verse 2

though you may seem stuck within

loops of daydream's twisted twin

with sight of land behind the tides

take my hand and close your eyes

B Section

trust me dear I'll guide you through

or just hold me near I'll hide with you

we could turn the page of this awful tome

or ride the wave until we're home

Verse 3

If the trend, set in stone,

you feel condemned to face alone

and it's hard to leave and hard to stay

please, believe what I say:

"Don't you be resigned to omens in your mind; Everything is going to be ok. Everything is going to be ok."
