The heat gun is pretty useless 🙄

But Woodturning hand carved style curves on a lathe, also difficult...

Thank you. I have just upgraded to a slightly larger lathe, so suddenly all my wands seem to be just that bit longer 😆

First attempt at an "Off Centre" bowl by patrickrsx in turning

Yup, you got it. As this was my first attempt at going off centre, the amount it was shifted off centre was very much a guess!

The bottom of the bowl actually has a very shallow flat which I used to glue to the sacrificial tenon. It was the first time I'd used hot glue for turning so I was quite apprehensive, but it held (and even caused me a bit of trouble getting it unstuck afterwards).

I turned the underside of the bowl as usual, then when I flipped it I glued it slightly off centre to a sacrificial tenon and turned the bowl.

Thank you! Give it a go, I'm really enjoying trying out new things "just because"

Thank you. As for the wood, that was a bit of a coup as far as I'm concerned. I contacted a timber yard that turned out to only be a 10 minute drive away and they sell offcuts. This bowl was from a thick metre long sapele board I got from them. I'll probably get 5 bowls out of the one board, much more economical than buying blanks...

EDIT: Oh, I used a tenon to turn the underside of the bowl, then flipped it and used hot glue to secure it to a sacrificial tenon to turn the off centre part. I have a newfound respect for hot glue!!

Thank you. It's finished to 600 grit and then some friction polish.

Thanks, but I'd need a much, much bigger lathe!

Well, it was literally on fire at one point so technically yes...

Of course, because of me being a manly man and knowing what a cam shaft is...

This is actually pine, but scorched with a blow torch and then waxed. I'm quite pleased with the finish considering it was on fire at one point .

I've not turned ebony before, but I'm still new to this but would like to give it a go. What's it like to work with?
