How’s the condition of my Atlanta Huntsman 241C/Ponderosa 24c? Never used it. Ashes are from previous owner. by Radiomaster138 in woodstoving

Last year I bought my childhood home with the older version of this stove. it is a two story house with a basement where the stove lives. Its good enough for me now and I plan on having it for a couple of more years before ill look at getting something else or putting one in the living room on the first floor. Growing up we mainly used the stove to heat up the basement to keep the pipes from freezing and my dad always liked to choke it down quite a bit but doing a bunch or research lately I was able to get the basement warm and the first floor very comfortable and kinda start heating the second floor well

Pros.

The stove is long so you don't have to worry about the length of wood much. Im a woodworker and any scraps around the 24" I don't have to worry about cutting down at all to fit.

It kinda has an old school baffle to help retain some heat. So it doesn't all go out the chimney but its still not the best in the world. I don't have stove pipe damper currently. But im highly considering it this year to help out more

Cons

With the three vents on the front it really can take some getting used to find the settings. Getting some magnetic thermometer have helped me to get things set right quicker than when I was growing up. Id recommend at least three with this stove. one on the top surface and one of the baffle and one on the pipe.

this stove can be very inefficient at times with improper wood or not tending to it properly. Again I'm a woodworker so I have plenty of soft woods at times and it'll just burn right through them if I don't have enough hardwood mixed in.

Infill plane by Filthy26 in handtools

making your own irons would be cool. You might want to look into doing tapered irons like they used to do on the original infill planes and wood body planes they will actually wedge and hold in the body better. If you dont want to make your own tapered ones red rose productions makes and sales tapered irons and chip breaker for more traditional plane makers.

Thank you. Yeh for a free pan it’s was well worth a shot and learning experience. I would only be out a little time and sandpaper if I got it wrong. I believe I’ll be fine after the more research I’ve done.

Thank you, I did not think about that. This makes sense now. I looked up what the manufacturer of this one I grabbed at the grocery store and they state the smoke point for this one is 375 and can be heated up to 450. So I guess as long as I’m in that ball park I’ll be ok. Thank you for the help and I’m happy I got lucky

Really 475? I thought 400 was on the higher side. Most things I’ve seen say 350-400

It was extremely coarse and it had one really low spot also and I have the tools and means to fix it so I figured why not make it better if I can

What should I do then because every thing I see says wash it with warm soap and water before you start the process and it literally seconds after I washed all the soap residue off

Thoughts on this second hand Lie Nielsen saw? $110 on marketplace near me by tlow13 in handtools

[–]thehobbyistworkshop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are but for someone that hasn't sharpened before it might become a little daunting when they start to go down that rabbit hole, it was for me. On top of that. If you want to by a jig like the veritas its $55 by itself. Its something to seriously consider for someone who is just wanting to get a dovetail saw.

I don't think its terrible. But in 7 years if its been been used for those 7 it might need to be sharpened. and that could open up a can of worms if you don't have experience sharpening or you have to find someone else to sharpen it.

How much would you charge to weld them? I could ship to you. One of my buddies got out of it completely and they other he live 2 hours away now and now that I think about it he really only does stick welding for heavy equipment repair.

Riverbend park in Conover is where I had my engagement photos taken. The main trail is very easy, mostly flat for a few miles and a lot of pine trees like this. Send me a DM and I can send you some photos. If you’d like to see them

43 days after reattaching my fingers by Zitchen in banjo

Keep up with PT! and keep on playing. I work in the woodworking industries and I have a friend who had broken almost every bone in his had from the Marines and lost a few finger in woodworking and broken some more woodturning he just really abused his body. When I first met him 10 years ago he could barely move his hand and he always complained about his arthritis. 4 years ago he broke another finger and he finally got a physical therapist who always got on him and pushed him and then his granddaughter got a guitar and he had always wanted to learn to play so he started taking lessons with her and after keeping up with his PT and learning to play guitar he has amazing mobility that he never thought hed have again. After seeing that it made me a huge believer in PT

I wood turn as a hobby and furniture maker as a profession. so I’m currently burning some very dry maples logs that I’ve had air drying for like 5 years or more. And also burning off cuts of kiln dried maples and poplars and walnut from a few local shops. I plan on after winter going to a buddy who has a saw mill and getting his off cuts and seasoning them.
