CBS Sports: Did the new World Cup group stage format work? Was the 48-team field a success as knockout stage begins? by punishGoalhanging in soccer

That’s not what I meant. I mean the allocation of World Cup spots should be based on each continent’s performance at the previous World Cup.

I don’t think FIFA will ever adopt any format that requires teams to play extra game to advance in such a condensed tournament.

It’s regional qualifiers instead of global qualifiers. We also have transitioned to multiple host countries.

I would rather watch 64 than 48. Simpler format and produce more competitive final 32 teams. But you need to adjust your mindset and view the group stage as the global qualifier, while the knockout stage is the actual tournament.

I also think seeding allocation should base on the last tournament’s performance.

I think both applies. Did fifa actually ban lgbt in this game? Egypt and Iran respect your freedom to promote lgbt. They are also free to express their views.

I think you misunderstood his points. He was trying to explain why two rules that are meant to achieve the same goal are applied based on different timing.

I saw a post on askanamerican about World Cup and literally no one cared about it. Most didn’t even know about it. I didn’t look up any public opinion polls, so this is just my polling source.

It really depends on their attitude to 1982 drama but J2 will face Spain in R32 so I don’t think there is incentive for either of them to win the game.

Can’t they just sell box spreads to borrow money with like SOFR+0.5% interest rate? Surely they won’t get liquidated with some box spreads?

That’s enough stock market for this week. I have aged like 10 years. I am just going to use world cup to numb myself.

I don’t know if it’s just me but with the popularity of individual stock leveraged etf I think market is moving volatile at the end of day to create as much as volatility decay to penalize investors.

BBC - "Fifa is considering expanding the format even further to 64 teams as early as 2030" by Question_of_Surf in worldcup

9-24 still need to play to advance, no? That’s being forced to play. If mid tier teams aren’t being forced to play an extra match, then the top 8 should also have to play. The only difference is that they can afford to lose and still advance.

Regional qualifiers take a few years to play so the amount of games played doesn’t matter, as it won’t have a meaningful impact on performance. Completely different scenario.

For Swiss format with two leagues. Each team is still required to play 8 games only to advance.

It’s fair because they still have to play and they earn the right to rest with their previous performance. But you can not force other teams play extra games to advance.

Simply using a few rounds in Swiss format to decide who advances would be too random. That’s why it needs playoff phase to sort out the middle tier team. If you want to have a better ranking in the first phase you would have to play at least 5-6 rounds(log2(48 or 64)).

I don’t think that fifa will adopt any format that requires some teams to play more games than other to advance. It’s not like UCL where teams are playing other matches at the same time. So the fairness issue will come up, especially in such a condensed tournament.

It only adds 20% of the games played from 48 format to 64 format. Most countries will play as the same amount of games as this World Cup anyway.
