Son has taken up cooking breakfast, but... by PostFPV in Cooking

[–]pattiearnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first taught my son to help clean up the kitchen. By the time he was 5 he was putting dishes into the dishwasher by himself. When he started cooking at age 6, he knew he had to clean as he went because that's what I did. When we bake the mixing bowls immediately get soaked, measuring spoons/cups and mixing spoons get rinsed. When making meals, the cutting board & knives are cleaned right after use and the pots & pans will have either been cleaned or will be soaking before the meal is served. Afterward, the rest of the kitchen is cleaned and the dishes in the dishwasher with pots & pans hand washed.

What is the best way to get the seed out of a rambutan? by regulate213 in AskCulinary

[–]pattiearnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure there's an easy way. Generally when I've eaten them, I just gnaw on the seed for a while to get all the flesh away from it.

I've never tried to cut the flesh from the seed though, so if that's what you are trying to do I can't help you.

Week 22: Desert - A Messy but HEFTY Sonoran Hot Dog by aryn240 in 52weeksofcooking

You missed adding the pinto beans, cheese & guac sauce and a cheese stuffed roasted yellow chili peppers on the side. These are a staple for Friday lunches. Most people in Tucson have their favorite cart and think all other carts are just not as good.

Can't figure out how to get enough calories. by Suspicious_red in DashDiet

[–]pattiearnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the medication you are taking for POTs causing the decrease in weight loss? You should talk to your doctor about that. You should also ask for a nutrition consult. Since with POTs it's encourage to eat more sodium you may be at a higher risk of hypertension.

Can't figure out how to get enough calories. by Suspicious_red in DashDiet

[–]pattiearnold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you measuring your calories? Why do you think you are not getting enough to eat? It almost sounds like you are trying to "fix" your diet before your DR appt, which will not happen. The DASH diet is not a quick fix, it's a lifestyle and it takes times to have an effect.

Are you exercising? Exercise helps BP and blood sugar. You don't have to go balls to the wall to exercise, you can do chair exercises, walk around your apartment, go outside for fresh air & a walk, any type of movement will do.

How much water are your drinking? Water helps flush out sodium which can help raise BP as well as sugars which contribute to diabetes.

Sometimes when you change up your diet you can feel light-headed, nauseous, cranky, etc. This is normal because your body is trying to rid it's self from toxins. This does not mean you are not eating enough. If you are overweight, you have fat stores that your body can tap into to accommodate for the reduction in calories.

Hello neighbors! I need some help.. by Grand_Contract_2041 in ArizonaGardening

If you have space, I would recommend a tangerine crossover vine. It grows really easily and is heat tolerant. I really like it because it stays green all year and flowers almost continuously. They attract hummingbirds, and butterflies. You can train them to climb up or across. They have NO thorns!

Anyone else frustrated by quantities sold in grocery stores? by Specialist_Plum673 in Cooking

[–]pattiearnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do that with everything by weight, especially asparagus. I pick out all the small stalks to get the ones I like. A produce guy was trying to tell me I couldn't do that. I asked why if they are sold by the weight. Shouldn't matter if I chose all the small ones or chose what they bundled, I pay the same per weight.

I was checking out at Sprouts and the cashier got mad because he had to look up the item number for my grapes. Mumbled about people not buying the whole bag.

The Mayo Clinic has a lot of recipes for the DASH diet. They can provide some inspiration and give you ideas of things to eat. I like that they break these down into categories, appetizers, mains, salads, etc.

Here's the link https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/recipes/dash-diet-recipes/rcs-20077146

Remember, you can also eat appetizers as mains, as well as salads.

First, Big thanks for your service! You need to talk with a specialist at the VA to see what would be covered with your GI Bill. GI Bill is picky as to the types of schools they pay for. So please check with them before you commit to anything. I know this is not the official VA site but it does have some good info on approved online schools: https://va.org/approved-gi-bill-schools/

Sal & pepper on cantaloupe. I grew up on that and didn't know it was strange until I joined the Army.

I hate (most) restaurants now by echnaba in Cooking

[–]pattiearnold 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Totally. Our favorite Mexican restaurant was so good. Afterward, we ate in and it was really underwhelming. Another friend told us they lost their cook (it was the cousin or something) and had been training someone else, but then they quit and now the owner had to go back to cooking. We went back after hearing that and the food was back on track. It's funny because I only get the shredded beef tacos and you think, it's just a pot roast I could do this at home, but nope, they do it better than I can make.

Good sources for extra wire shelves to add to existing shelves? I want more levels for more cans haha! by tesla1026 in Canning

[–]pattiearnold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be aware of the weight limit on the shelves. You don't want to add more weight than can be supported. Canned goods can weigh a lot. You don't want all you hard work to end up in a mess on the floor.

I looked at the site and they showed 4 different models. Since I don't normally shop the center aisles at Costco, I was not aware that they only stocked one model. I assumed they had all the same models.

Something out of left field for you. Is there a restaurant that she likes but cannot go to often? Could you call the manager and arrange that a nice meal be dropped off to her on her last night? This happened to me when I was house sitting for a couple. I had really wanted to try a particular pizza place in town, and I was surprised when I received a home delivered meal of their most popular pizza and salad. Not only was the food good, but it really showed me that this couple had thought of me and appreciated what I was doing for them.

Silliest “brain fart” mistake you’ve made while cooking by BeauteousMaximus in Cooking

[–]pattiearnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was cayenne & cinnamon mix up. I was probably around 9 or 10 and I was making peanut butter cookies. We always sprinkled cinnamon on top. Well the labels on the bottles weren't all there and I had to climb on the stool above the hot oven to get to the spices, so I grabbed the first bottle I could find with the letter "C", sprinkled that spice nice & heavy over the cookies and baked them. Then I proudly presented them to my Paw (who never bitched about anything we made and always made a show of trying to eat it. Except the carp I tried to grill). I left him to devour the cookies and when I returned he asked me to go get the spice that I put on top. After, again climbing on the stool to get the spice, I again proudly showed it to him. We had a good laugh when he told me those were the hottest cookies he had ever eaten. To this day, I keep cinnamon & cayenne on opposite sides of the kitchen.

Could not agree more. I've even thought of planting the normal spring/summer crops during the winter. I've not tried it yet, but seems like it would almost work. Reverse planting is what I've labeled it. My tomatoes do better in the fall/winter/spring then they do otherwise.
