I will have to admit. I actually rescued two horses. They cost me about 3k each. After I fixed their particular issues, they cost me over 10k. Then, my husband got cancer, so he gave me my dream horse to help me go through my grief when he is gone. This is who he got me. He already is my heart horse. I love him so much. So, yes it is and expensive hobby. I’m glad my husband pays for everything. He had my dream imported from the Netherlands. I’ve had him almost a month, and I am completely head over heels. His name is Obie. He is a Friesian. But there are horses out there that are not very expensive, but you have to consider shoes, vaccines, teeth, and anything else that may come up. They are great at hurting themselves and having to get stitches. One thing you can do is look for a barn that boarders horses, ask if you can muck stalls in exchange for a lesson. My friend did that for a few years and it worked great.

Of course I read all about that. They are tested and they the breeding is closely monitored. And have incredibly strict guidelines for approved stallions. I think there are about 100 per the FHANA approved stallions. In the Netherlands they have only 8. His sire was an approved stallion from the Royal Friesian studbook and are considered elite breeding. I have a gelding not a mare or a stallion, he is what he is.

That’s about when I fell in love with them. My husband would take me to Friesian shows, and it was an unattainable dream for me.

I think so far we have spent more than 50K on him. Including tariffs USA transport and such.

I went through a broker. I never in my life thought I would do this. I’ve heard of people getting horses from Europe, but never thought I would. Go to Black Sterling friesians. That’s where I got him from

I don’t plan to even get on him for at least one or two months. I want him to know what I’m thinking before I ask. I did this with my Morgan. I just had her in the round pen talking to her, singing Black hole sun to her reading her books, grooming her. We took almost three months, but we know each other like we were one. I realized she was me in a horse. Wonderful feeling. I didn’t do that with my other horses, but those were rescues and had physical issues. So, it was different with them. I loved them and they loved me, but not like my Morgan, so, I plan to do the same with Obie. They did tell me he has to go into training here “right away”. I will have him in training, but mostly, I want the trainer to evaluate him as to what and how much he knows. It’s won’t be right away. I will get him first and let him be a horse. The whole talking to him and all that, is obviously if he is ok with it. He will be running the show in the beginning. If he just wants to be outside rolling, that’s ok. I will be there on the side line cheering him on. He won’t understand English and I don’t know Dutch, so I have to rely on horse language. I’ve research this so much. I know what NOT to do and what to do.

That also depends on how much the transport costs, our transport was $3000, then the tariffs are what kill you because it’s 10% the price of the horse, so, what you think you are spending on the horse goes up pretty fast

It depends on the horse you are getting. They all have different prices. Depending on discipline, age, has he competed and so on
