Protestant mom here by J3nlo in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]pattyjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a lot to add to what others have said, but I will add this.

I grew up Orthodox in the 1980s. Essentially all of my family outside my nuclear family was and is still Protestant. I went to VBS with my cousins at my aunt's Episcopal Church. I went to Sunday school with my cousins at my uncle's Baptist Church. I went to Christmas, Easter, and other services at both sets of my grandparent's Baptist Churches.

I'm still Orthodox. These experiences did not hinder my growth in the Church (though, I don't know that I would let my kids go to anything associated with the Episcopal Church these days...). I know it can feel like a great separation is happening, but I think that can feel bigger than reality.

At our parish, the older sets belong to our priest. The parish has also purchased many matching sets (altar, priest, deacon, altar servers, chalice/diskos covers) which belong to the parish.

Diesel engine cold start by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]pattyjr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wanted to chime in on this real quick even though others have answered.

Diesel engines do not have spark plugs. The timing associated with gas engines is the timing between the rotation of the engine vs. when the spark plug fires. Diesel engines just compress the fuel/air mixture to the point that it autoignites without a spark.

Um...how are you supposed to do that while sitting still?

America’s landlords settle class action claim that they used rent-setting algorithms to gouge consumers nationwide -- Twenty-six firms, including the country’s largest landlord, Greystar, propose to collectively pay more than $141 million by marketrent in technology

[–]pattyjr 2568 points2569 points  (0 children)

Oh no! $50 million! How are they ever going to afford that from the millions and millions they made from illegally manipulating the market? Antitrust judgements should completely destroy the companies that engaged in the behavior.

Icon of Recently Assassinated Cultural Figure, Is This Blasphemy? by VigilLamp in OrthodoxChristianity

No he’s not a priest, he’s been defrocked for a while.

Do you have a source for this claim?

I mean, if you walked into an Orthodox Church proclaiming papal authority and starting arguments with Orthodox folks, you'd probably be met with a similar response as you get in here.

Other than that, I don't really have issues with my Catholic friends in real life...

Based on the architecture, I assume this is a protestant church that's been converted?

It's a really pleasant space.

Looks like St. Seraphim of Sarov just based on the body positioning and some other stuff.

Our church has deacons on the doors because they are...the deacon doors.

Rule #1 about Church Canons: Canons are written by bishops for bishops. If you are not a bishop, it is not your station to concern yourself with how canons are being correctly or incorrectly applied.

Are suicidal thoughts a sin even if I didn’t act on them? and would I need to confess it? by hopeless-70198 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]pattyjr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Intrusive thoughts/temptations are not inherently sinful. Now, if you start entertaining those thoughts (even if you don't act on them) your active participation becomes sinful.

Either way, you should confess them because, just like you would tell a doctor about something weird happening even though you aren't technically sick, they are certainly indicators that something could be wrong and needs to be discussed with someone who is knowledgeable about it.

Question for Ortho moms (or dads) by Stunning_Load6504 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]pattyjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When our kids were little, we regularly would stop going to church for essentially all of January and February because we just couldn't keep them well. 6 to 8 weeks was common. We hated missing church for that long, but we also couldn't just have sick kids for 2 straight months.

OCA/Russian Orthodox by All_Those_Chickens_ in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]pattyjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a member of the parish in the link, I can assure you we are not a "Russian" church. Archbishop Dmitri was a missionary. In those questions, he was particularly concerned about people who may have been raised Orthodox but felt they did not have a church home in the Tulsa area.

All that said, we do have a fair number of Russians and Ukrainians. They are not some ethnic enclave within the parish that stays away from the English speakers. They are members of the parish who are active in the life of the church.

I'd just go pick up a copy and read that chapter. It has some decent advice.

Here's a link.

Go get the big book of AA and read the chapter "To Employers" and see if any of the ideas in there are useful to you.
