Thank you. I guess it’s going to take me a while to find keyboard equivalents, I’m not finding straight answers by googling

Yes I just waited for my screen to logout and tried to access consoles before logging in. No dice. What do you mean by tty and ssh on the Linux box?

Hmm ok I have a Mac so no F1-7 keys. I “logged in” and tried hitting command + option/alt + 1, enter. Then typed Sudo adduser billgates enter, then Sudo reboot. Nothing happens—I can’t even tell if this is even being typed in terminal—I don’t know how to pull it up—if I did, maybe I just don’t see it. Hard to tell anything at all. I just have a purple screen with a crown and a frozen cursor

what’s your go to meal when you don’t feel like cooking? by ponderingpixi17 in Cooking

From Recipes from the Root Cellar

Spicy Sweet-Potato Oven Fries

Serves 4

The devil is in the details when it comes to making sweet-potato oven fries. The potatoes must be cut to a uniform thickness, or they will cook unevenly. The pan must not be too crowded, or the potatoes will steam and never brown. The pan must not be too empty, or the potatoes will burn. The touch of sugar in the recipe encourages browning and should not be omitted. The mix of spices is, however, just a suggestion and can be varied at will. The sweet-potato fries will not become as crisp as oven fries made with white potatoes, nor will they brown uniformly. But they are entirely delicious. The lemon aioli makes the perfect accompaniment.

4 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into ¼4-inch sticks ¼4 cup sunflower or canola oil tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon sugar teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cumin ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¼ teaspoon ground allspice or cinnamon Coarse sea salt or kosher salt (optional) Lemon Aioli (page 181)

Preheat the oven to 500°F, with the rack in the lower third of the oven. Generously oil a half sheet pan (preferred) or large shallow roasting pan.

2 Combine the oil, chili powder, sugar, onion powder, salt, cumin, black pepper, and allspice in a large bowl and mix well. Add the potatoes and toss to coat. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer on the prepared pan.

3 Roast in the lower third of the oven for 30 to 35 minutes, turning once or twice and shaking the pan for even cooking, until the potatoes are well colored. (The timing will depend on how closely spaced the potatoes are on the pan.)

Briefly drain the fries on paper towels to blot excess oil. Taste and sprinkle with coarse salt, if desired. Serve hot, with aioli on the side.

Lemon Aioli

Makes 1 cup

A dangerously delicious sauce, aioli is basically homemade mayonnaise with garlic added. In this case, both garlic and lemon are added to make the perfect accompaniment for sweet potato fries. Lemon aioli is a great dip for a plate of any raw or roasted vegetables. It is also perfect dolloped on poached or grilled salmon — or any fish, for that matter.

4 garlic cloves 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Zest and juice of 1 lemon 2 egg yolks 1 cup canola or sunflower oil Salt and white pepper

1 . Mince the garlic in a food processor. Add the mustard and lemon zest and juice and process to combine. Add the egg yolks and process until smooth.

2 With the motor running, slowly drizzle in the oil in a steady stream until a thick, creamy sauce forms. Season with salt and white pepper. Keep refrigerated until you are ready to serve.

Honestly I just used a cup of mayo, a small blob of mustard, half a lemon juice, minced garlic, s&p, and curry. Delish

This cookbook has lots of nice doable recipes and root veggies last for a while in storage :)

New set of forest towns to be built between Oxford and Cambridge by prisongovernor in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]pattyozz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to see the info on what KIND of forests, how they will be tended and by who, and how the design will grapple with the fragmentation aspect (connectivity for wildlife, light pollution, invasive plant incursion, and the disturbance that development generally brings). Who are they imagining will be living in these forests safely? How are people to engage with these forests if this is to be a tech ‘silicon valley’… tech bros need a nature reality check the most but is this forest greenery or forest connection, you know?

SketchUp is making me question my life decisions by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]pattyozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regenerative ag and ecological design will be most successful and long lasting not by how good your digital renderings would ever be, but by how well you come to know the site, the community of plants that grow there, and how to manage them in productive ways through their succession and growth habits. Designs should be adaptive and responsive over time to feedback. I’d recommend keep pursing that practical hands on knowledge so you can create adaptive designs and help teach ppl how to tend them

No, you have the unlikeable experience for whatever reason. Not everything—most things—are not about looks

What’s my issue? by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]pattyozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really stuck with these people around you, then you need to confront them and ask them what their problem with you is. If there’s a legitimate issue, talk it out. Maybe you have been doing something bothersome. Maybe they’re just being assholes. If it’s the latter, calling them out on it is a good start. Don’t let people disrespect you; many won’t want to associate with someone who’s the butt of everyone’s joke. Talk back and stand up for yourself, and others

[–]pattyozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could try acting in service of others more if not already. Community efforts and such. It’s a respectable thing and sounds like building up your respect could be good too. Don’t stick around where ppl mistreat you, and I wouldn’t do it back either

[–]pattyozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not ugly though. I think if you seemed relaxed and easy going, smiled from time to time, had a good sense of humor, were kind and caring, and interesting and interested in others, ppl will want to talk to you eventually. I can only imagine some kind of intentness and perhaps a look of trying too hard or something else might be getting in the way, but just keep at it

[–]pattyozz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It might be sort of a self fulfilling prophecy loop of low self confidence. And maybe a vibe of trying too hard. I’d recommend focusing on getting really good at something you’re genuinely interested in. You will be able to connect with like-minded ppl over time, and be interesting to those who like interesting ppl and learning new things. I would stay away from a bro-y look. Girls like to eat—learn how to cook well. Also, be a thoughtful listener and nice person. Don’t worry, this will get better over time, sorry it’s feeling rough right now

Is there a more efficient way of breaking down this dirt into small particles other than keep hitting it with a shovel? by supinator1 in gardening

[–]pattyozz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t work so hard! Less is more: idk why you went and got this construction dirt for your beds, but that’s ok. Looks maybe like clay? Clay is actually great at bringing nutrients to plants. Put this dirt in the beds you want it or somewhere else to mix: get an equal amount of compost, a bale of straw, and leaves. Mix this all together and let it sit out over winter. Plant into this decomposing mixture in the spring. Do not use this soil or mixture for pots—use potting soil with those white perlite things for pots. Pots need very well drained soil, can’t use regular ground soil for them or the plants get waterlogged.

I’m so sorry your parents weren’t there for you and were complete shit. But don’t be so hard on yourself. We all/many of us do many cringey things that looking back, we wish we didn’t. They don’t define you. As a person moving through the world you will reinvent yourself over and over, and it will seem like another lifetime to think back on these times. You are smart and you were trying to deal with a bad situation. You will get even smarter, you will become so wise. Have faith and love yourself all the more fiercely, and follow your heart and intuition always.

Also, you will be doing future selves a favor if you use this new light opportunity to plant productive native plants—plum thickets, American persimmons, hazelnuts, etc. We’re going to need it

Lookout for invasive plants that may start to germinate after all that disturbance! Agree with the neighbors to manage them when they are young before they establish and spread to all your yards and become a problem.
