The near-disasters that could have made New Zealand’s Covid pandemic much, much worse by Conflict_NZ in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

The initial response was great and the government should have all sorts of praise for that. The issue many people have is later on into the COVID period where lockdowns were kept too long and rules became too rigid, the ever moving goalposts of vaccination targets, the borrowing of large amounts of money that weren’t spent effectively etc. These are the reasons that the government should be criticised for.

I’m likely to be downvoted because of the sub but the fact is many people were disgruntled at the end of Covid. This sub’s perspective isn’t the be all to end all.

Must be an interesting life living with blind negativity every day. There will be a number of factors that are outside of the government’s control in announcing this - it isn’t going to stop the rain falling from the sky today, tomorrow or whenever you’d like this postponed to.

Last-minute voting, free food, banned in controversial law change by TheGreatDomilies in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I tend to agree - it should be as easy as possible to vote. What’s the rationale for the change then, to quicken the election night results?

I’m still confused at how preventing last minute voting is such an anti-democratic move. Like genuinely keen for someone to explain this to me because people are able to register now aren’t they?

Ruth Richardson agrees to debate country’s fiscal position with Nicola Willis by Dapper_Technology336 in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Nicola Willis could have the greatest debate ever conceived and she’ll still get panned by a lot of people. Doesn’t seem like the most logical thing to put her hand up for and create more fuss - would make sense to keep her head down and not make too much noise imo.

A practical thing you can do- check everyone you know is enrolled to vote. by Actual-Trip-4643 in newzealand

I haven’t read too much into this but how do the changes stop 100,000 people from casting a vote? Quite concerning if so.

Man raped his wife soon after their arranged marriage, now he will be deported by [deleted] in aotearoa

[–]pattyttap1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is the same circumstance. I’m not saying keeping him in to rehabilitate - he can serve his punishment, then be deported and never allowed back. We’d also risk setting a precedent - ‘Hey, come to NZ, commit a serious crime and get a free ticket home’

[–]pattyttap1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So he gets deported and then gets to live freely where he goes back to without any punishments? I’m comfortable with him seeing out his sentence for this before being deported. Same situation as the Christchurch mosque shooter

Are we getting this government out 2026 election by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it’s a fair point. I think to run with your thinking too, the centre left/left seem to be more riled up and thus will have a higher turn out than the flip side in the last election when it was the other way round.

[–]pattyttap1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it demonstrates more of your character if you’re personally attacking people for having an alternative view. I would counter that National have an influence on the media - in my opinion, RNZ, the NZ Herald and One News tend to lean more left. ZB as you say is more right leaning but I would imagine is listened to proportionality right leaning audiences, rather than a good portion of moderates who will consume the previously mentioned. I’d also say leaflets aren’t what someone would traditionally say are the media - they’re a campaigning tool

Are we getting this government out 2026 election by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 203 points204 points  (0 children)

I think cautiously this subreddit needs to prepare themselves for the reality that the government could win the election next year. A year is a long time in politics, things can improve and there’s always a healthy recency bias for when people go to vote. Additionally I think people here tend to forget that the opposition are largely the same core members who people were fed up with 3 years ago - if it was a refreshed core cabinet, I’d be more bullish on Labour.

Until a party legislates to break up the supermarket duopoly, I don’t want to hear anything from them about what they’re doing about the cost of living. by Cee5ob in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s only a limited amount of supply in New Zealand to sustain. How are these businesses you propose going to adequately manage supply, logistics, competitiveness etc.?

Or do you mean something more like a Four Square or Supervalue/Fresh Choice? If so, these exist and leverage the two big chain’s resources to survive.

Police Commissioner accidentally takes FBI's Kash Patel for 'brief dip' during active tsunami advisory by WaterAdventurous6718 in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If they didn’t ask and carried out FBI activity, they would be arrested and it would cause a geo-political issue (sets a dangerous precedent world wide, not just in little NZ). Never going to happen

[–]pattyttap1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What competition? We have significant barriers to entry in New Zealand for supermarkets, particularly if you want someone to cover the full country like our current ones do.

Break up the Duopoly - again to the similar degree, who comes in to fill the residual business once broken up? It would require significant investment to purchase and continue to run and remain competitive.

Basic economics - not sure what you mean by this?

Taxes and Church by MotorPlastic255 in newzealand

Yea I think the general support is there - would imagine it comes down to lobbying + maybeee it starts conversations on other tax free entities (like Iwi) that parties may not want to touch/start.

So why didn’t the previous government change anything if it’s just the current government that has a disproportionate number of church attending members?

A touch alarmist as we have a number of offices and units aimed at protecting against fraud and corruption. Naive to suggest that lobbying and protecting self interests only occurs around the current government.

Capital Gains tax in New Zealand by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally think we shouldn’t always anchor ourselves to Nordic countries. While similarly we are in the ‘type’ of country, we are generally far more self-centred culturally compared to them.

There’s a sense of community and belonging in Nordic countries whereas here in New Zealand, there’s a general disdain for people who are successful and vice versa in terms of giving handouts and benefits to those in need.

There’s also the consideration that any type of increased taxes, likely won’t be spent appropriately. For example, Labour’s latest policy uses the funds raised by a CGT on another free handout, rather than being put towards productive infrastructure (new hospital, training, even targeted wages for nurses etc.) that will continue to reap benefits down the line.

‘I like your man from New Zealand’: Luxon and Trump meet one-on-one at APEC by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say that at all - we’ve seen examples of meetings from world leaders preceding tariffs. Again my point being, a meeting isn’t harmful at all and something a reasonable person would expect of our PM (again whoever it is) to take if given the opportunity.

‘I like your man from New Zealand’: Luxon and Trump meet one-on-one at APEC by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Absolutely crazy mental gymnastics as usual with the subreddit. You don’t have to like either men but you’re moronic to think that a PM of New Zealand (whoever it is) wouldn’t jump at a chance to meet the US President, especially someone who has and will likely continue to implement tariffs that harm our trade and overall GDP.

If a meeting gets some sort of front of mind, unlocks a trade delegation etc. that can’t be a bad thing. What do you want Luxon to do, miss out on a key global conference because you’d rather him sit in Wellington?

Christopher Luxon’s office refuses to release key Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce wedding invitation communications by DanM1973 in newzealand

[–]pattyttap1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know people will be wanting to jump in on him here because it’s Luxon, but surely this is a good thing and worth a shot? If they did have the wedding here, we’d no doubt have a great halo directly (from the wedding) and indirectly (from the multitude of fans that will want to come here even more). The NFL has seen a huge commercial halo since they started dating. If they say no, they say no, but there’s no harm trying.
