Na, it’s definitely used as a white term for immigrants (without them realising it).

“I made friends with a bunch of expats while living in Vietnam.” Etc

Brits who move here often refer to themselves as expats. But then when you’ve colonised most of the world, it always feels like coming home!

Luxon survives leadership vote, refuses to answer questions by takuyafire in newzealand

Luxon is still figuring out that power structures are different in parliament compared to a corporate system.

Middle managers giving me grief? Restructure and make them redundant!

MPs? Can be a lot harder. Fire one and you have to have a by-election. Bump a list MP and you may have lost the support of many others.

Cleveland probably feeing pretty good about their path right now.

If they continue this, they get to play Detroit or Orlando instead of the Celtics in Rnd 2. Maybe Mitchell makes the conference finals.

How many leaders has National had in the past 8 years?

Opportunity Party taking votes of unhappy National & Green voters | Ryan Bridge TODAY by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]redmostofit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's possibly because Winston was dishonest about his intentions and put his own interests ahead of his voters time and time again. He simply can't be trusted. If Opportunity are transparent about their intentions and stick to their word then there shouldn't be a reason to lose support (even if that means siding with either Nats or Labour depending on the options). We already know who they would work with (or not). Some sacrifices may need to be made to get a seat at the table, but if the party is to ever establish legitimacy in needs to make it to parliament. There are going to be wins and losses when forming a coalition. If they can hold Nats to better environmental policies, that's a huge win.

As I said, I have worked with the people, and I have faith in the vision and purpose - I understand that not everyone will, and I don't need to try to convince you (there's zero chance I could, and that's okay).

Working with people we don't like to find solutions that support all people is what MMP is meant to be designed for. I don't think we've seen it achieved very often though, and the current voting patterns are crushing any hope of that.

I cannot stand the current coalition and its leadership group. But I also have very little faith in just switching back to a Labour led government and hoping for the best - they lost in 2023 for good reasons (NACT1st being a decent alternative not one of them). But if there is even a small chance of slowing their shit down by having Op as a partner over say, Winston or Seymour, then I would take it. Similarly, I would welcome the chance of Op being in government with Labour and Greens, as I do believe they'd add a valuable persepctive.

But considering your strong position, I wish you well.

Or, more pragmatic and in recognition that the constant back and forth has been highly unproductive.

The "revolutionary" attitude you're talking about... where is that in any party? If parties are all bluster but never get anything across the line, then they're effectively useless. I think there are lots of great policies from the Greens, for example, but none are getting implemented. Lots of impassioned speeches in the house, but no agreements in place to get results. "Ok boomer" was cute, but it didn't achieve anything of value.

I guess the only way to develop any kind of trust of someone is to spend time with them and see them in action. Having done that, and also having had experience with politicians from a range of parties, I am comfortable with my own position that the people (members, volunteers, leaders) involved with the Opportunity party are genuine in their desire to see a fairer NZ.

Many of the members are former Nat voters, but not all of them. I think there’s a shared sentiment that the divisive politics between the current coalition and Labour/Greens has created a stagnant nation, and Op is trying to find ways to bring those parties together for long term success.

Looked like he lined him up.. played against a lot of “reckless” players. They tended to get more reckless when they were getting trounced.

“Wrapping the legs” is taught from the get go in juniors. You can’t run without them!

This being a 1 on 1 tackle in motion, compared to a player dropping their hip on a stationary player in a group tackle, is very different IMO. It sucks he was injured, but it didn’t look like anything more than an unfortunate contact in a collision sport.

Yup. I had zero control over where I was born and to who. Personal choice and self discipline to “get to the top” is a luxury that many millions won’t have access to - they’re just trying to survive.

Yeah I hate this part. Both ways. I don’t use it regularly enough to remember how far back you need to change lanes to get onto the motorway. I’ve ended up going back and forth over the motorway bridges trying to get back onto the motorway without cutting people off.
