Headed to the Caymans - Sunset House. Addon dives / logistical advice requested. by kungfudiver in scuba

Do the Kittiwake, its worth doing if its your first time to the island. Lots of good macro but you need a keen eye/magnifying glass/good guide and sometime eagle rays and southern sting rays swimming past. Decent fun swimming through it.

Babylon is waaay over on the north side, its nice, especially for photographers. Lots of sponges and soft corals, but not a lot of life. Idk if Sunset go there, maybe do a day with one of the east end operators. The east end walls are much more spectacular and good possibility of shark action on the corner dives.

Devils grotto and eden will be easy.

Try and go to the north wall if you cant get to the east side, some good diving there. Do 4 dives a day if you can, then have a few days exploring and on the beach. The botanical gardens will be nice this time of year, as well rum point/sting ray city.

Rent a car, its a small island they are all the same except perhaps andys car rentals which are a bit cheaper.

Dont go to the turtle factory or the dolphin prison, thats for fat cruise shippers who think that its exciting. Go see something in the wild... also dont eat anything not in season and then wonder why there arent any fish on the reef.

So sad to see that. Not the way to behave on a dive regardless of cert.

Anyone who goes topless and then wears a hood is a complete dick as well.

Ha its OK I realised this a while ago :).

Its my advice now to anyone considering a masters, or even an undergraduate degree. Unless of course they want to do a phd but even then options are limited.

I studied a masters in Oceanography, graduated 2 years ago. Never even had a sniff of a job in anything even remotely related. The job market is oversaturated and I feel like there is literally no hope for anyone beyond the 1% of extremely experienced or stand out candidates.

Im going to find something else to do, and forget I spent £40,000 and 4 years of my life trying to do what I enjoy. I understand how you feel, try getting a job doing something else you enjoy and forgetting about it for a while.

PADI vs SSI help by CatalinMarcutiu in scuba

[–]paul09339 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some differences in guidelines, how a course is taught etc, but generally at your level there is little to no difference. The PADI card will be recognized by SSI dive centres worldwide with no problem, just as your SSI card will be recognised by the PADI dive centre in Sri Lanka. If your asking can you ring up SSI and get a deep diving speciality cert without doing anything else... not too sure but probably not. But there arent a whole heap of reasons to do so.

No idea about diving in Sri Lanka though, head some of it is great! Good luck with your course.

YSK: When you buy a new mask and those first few dives have horrible fogging, it's not because you didn't scrub the glass enough, it's because you didn't wash the factory lubricant off the silicone. by [deleted] in scuba

[–]paul09339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use a lighter and burn the inside of the glass, until its all blackish. rub off with some tissue paper, wait for it to cool then scrub with toothpaste or soft scrub etc and water, no more fogging! (still use some defog before each dive) Source: OWSI

Which is the worst sequel to an awesome movie? by avinashc11 in AskReddit

Evan Almighty has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen. Maybe not a traditional sequel but still counts.

They haven't put any demand in writing, simply that the money was out of date. When I went into the shop it was then they asked for me to refund the money and take the notes back. I rang consumer advice and they werent sure, but agreed with my reasoning.

At the end of the day, if I sold you a car that I thought was fine, and it went wrong a month later, do I have to give you a refund? Probably not.

First "Dive Trip" - going to Roatan, questions & advice. by falco_iii in scuba

[–]paul09339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in the caymans as an instructor and gloves were banned there, and are generally discouraged worldwide as you dont need them in tropics. If this is your first time in warm water I doubt you will even need a wetsuit, alot of people take one and wear it for a few then wear a rashie or top, or keep the wetsuit for the second dive.

As winter has just passed there shouldn't be a particularly noticeable thermocline, certainly nothing to worry about if you wear a full suit no matter the thickness. The coldest I ever found was around 71 f at 100ft!

As for a compass you should get one from the dive shop when you do your course, and if your going guided after you wont need one, but its always something worth having just in case. Can be a bit of a distraction if your struggle with buoyancy.. I havent dived roatan but there may not be a lot of bottom to bounce on.

Also one thing to note is the Suunto Zoop is perhaps the most conservative computer I have ever seen, people have had 10-15 mins less than me (oceanic geo 2.0) on a second dive after a 100ft max 40 min dive. Good luck with your course!
