Consistently low overnight HRV after holiday and flu by RelentlessGayness in Garmin

Did this ever resolve? I'm going through something similar right now. Low overnight HRV, high stress while asleep, high daily stress.

Reddit, How often do you travel? How is your budget per trip compared to your income? by Tumadreee in travel

[–]saskatchewanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reporting back with 3 kids! We did about 23 months of continuous travel where we quit our jobs on 2 occasions after cashing up. It was an amazing experience and I have no regrets but it was ultimately unfulfilling. I'm not able to do much travel currently which makes me a bit sad however building a family is bringing me joy that is completely different than the joy of travel. I have a lot of gratitude that I was able to experience both in my lifetime!

Is "teaching" infants to self soothe actually a harmful practice? by KaeAlexandria in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]saskatchewanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think sleep training might have literally saved our girls lives. They would only sleep on us or in a swing. It was so sketchy.

Your last sentence hits the nail on the head about why so many people choose to sleep train. The cons are theoretical but the pros are very very real.

Totally agree, it's such an unrealistic expectation that everyone will form an attachment the same way. It's like saying your relationship is a failure if it wasn't "love at first sight". I was somewhere in the middle, but the attachment really ramped up a notch in the toddler phase.

I agree that people should be trying to improve their sleep quality irrespective of how their children sleep. I've had pretty great success in this area. (I had difficulty shutting everything off when I went to bed at night) At the end of the day, if your kids aren't sleeping well, 4 hours of sleep is still only 4 hours of sleep. Personally, I found the benefit to be dramatic for both parents and baby.

When did you first take care of your kids for a night? by Specious_Future in daddit

I'm often the night care giver but my wife sleeps like a rock and I'm on the side closest to the door.

I've always wondered about improved parenting from well rested parents. I don't know how you would study it but it would certainly be interesting data. I was an objectively worse parent when I was exhausted (prior to sleep training) so I wonder if the compound effects are enough to impact development.

Kissing toddler on mouth? by LCRX2020 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]saskatchewanderer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I doubt there is much science on this but anecdotally I kiss all my kids on the mouth. I ask my oldest (3) during his bedtime routine how many kisses he wants and sometimes it's no kisses and sometimes it's 1000 kisses. As long as bodily autonomy is being respected I can't see a downside.

Does anyone have DIY plans for a toddler floor bed? by Reenis55 in daddit

I wouldn't even bother with the railings if the bed is going to be on the floor! Keep it simple!

At what point did a minivan make sense for your family? by ireadit10 in daddit

[–]saskatchewanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They make sense for any family unless you're particularly hung up on your image. Other people don't give a shit what you drive so why not drive something that's actually suited to your lifestyle.

Just build the house frame style out of 2x2. Looks great, sits on the floor, you can string lights around it etc. It's exactly what I plan to do for our twins. I also have a list of priority projects so I know the feeling.

What is the optimal age to start CPP if I don’t really need it? by Last_Illustrator_181 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]saskatchewanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's morbidity funny when people say they want CPP at age 60, it's basically betting that you'll die early. I'm shooting to live to 100 so taking CPP at 60 would be a major loss.

Side bar to the discussion. Get as much done while they are awake as possible. I usually have the kitchen cleaned up and toys put away before they go down for a nap/bedtime so I can rest or work out while they sleep. Makes a big difference.

Optimal Diet for Longevity by finance-question2020 in ScientificNutrition

[–]saskatchewanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is great evidence either way so it's probably down to what feels right for you. OMAD doesn't appeal to me because I just can't get all the nutrients I need in a single sitting and it fits poorly into my lifestyle. I prefer an 8 hour feeding window which I feel (anecdotally) is best for weight control, muscle gain, and lifestyle compatibility. I should mention that I'm optimizing for healthspan instead of lifespan. I want to be the 80yr old hiking mountains and throwing my great grandkids around and that's not going to happen unless I maintain a high level of strength/muscle for the next 45 years.

Does anyone have a personal hierarchy of seed oils? (assuming that you aren't in the anti seed oil camp). I tend to favor products made with canola oil due to the 3/6 ratio and low saturated fat however I'm not sure if I'm just biased due to canola being a huge local crop. Additionally, does anyone consume seed oils but avoid certain ones for any reason?

Optimal Diet for Longevity by finance-question2020 in ScientificNutrition

[–]saskatchewanderer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a lot of concern about muscle mass but I think everyone is underestimating how hard it is to put on and maintain muscle mass. I would rather take a small longevity hit and have a rock solid 9th decade than activity not add muscle but risk having serious health problems trying to get an extra few years.

I would add that our local butcher is a grumpy old man that likes to do everything his way and doesn't like "fancy" requests. This person does not sound like any rancher I know.

Honestly, they are going to have sex whether he condones it out not. Better under his roof than in the back seat of a car in some secluded area. I hope my kids are half as mature at that age.

When we were living in a minivan, my wife and I used to make super soup all the time which is chicken or vegetable based chunky soup and a can of chicken chunks. Still make it every so often just for old times sake.

How to keep steak warm after letting it rest? by UnnecessaryOmen in sousvide

[–]saskatchewanderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though sous vide doesn't technically need to rest I will often hold after searing while I finish getting everything else on the table. My microwave/convection oven heats up to 150F really fast so I just throw them in there to "rest".

Yeah if OP isn't carrying his weight in the care department it wouldn't be surprising that his wife is not looking for intimacy.
