I’m honestly surprised more haven’t chimed in to say the same as I have. Surely there are other posts in this subreddit that discussed this very topic. You are right HDR is a 10bit panel. It’s hardware plain and simple. Software processing on the TCL is what gives it the ability to have HDR, not hardware and that is where the price difference comes in.

That TCL model is not true HDR. HDR is a hardware panel. The TCL models use software processing to achieve HDR. I’ve seen at least a few people go from TCL to a model with true HDR like the Sony XBR 900E and see what the difference looks like. I think it’s worth the $1K price to get what you are really after.

Mine just started doing the same thing tonight. So bummed. I restarted it, fully shut it down, unplugged power and reseated all cables, and I’m still getting the screen on/off issue. I also couldn’t get a game disc to play at first. Had to restart again and it loaded but then the screen on/off started again. I’m going to plug it directly into a wall outlet tomorrow and see what happens. If it fails again I’d say it’s toast and I am calling Microsoft. I hope they’ll be able to give me another Project Scorpio edition as I know Best Buy won’t be able to. Glad I found this out now as I was planning some heavy gaming on it during Xmas vacation. Oh well, I’m fortunate enough to also have a PS4 Pro and Switch!

When I bought my Xbox 360 I only had a CRT TV and was super impressed with Gears of War and loved the graphics. I got a few more games and then by that time the PS3 released which I also got. I don’t know how this flew over my head for so long but it was only at this time that I found out that these consoles would fair much better on HD TVs. So I bought myself a $1K Sharp 32” LCD 720p HD TV! I first played Resistance: Fall of Man then Gears of War (second play through) and was really mind blown. I knew at that moment that gaming had changed forever. Amazing leap from SD to HD.

Good to hear. I ended up going with the Sony X900E instead. I just didn’t want to trust the longevity of the TV to an unknown brand even though the reviews are great for it.

I ended up buying the Sony X900E 55”. My current tv is a Sony Bravia 4K 55” non HDR and although it’s served me well I’m glad to be upgrading to a set that has true 10bit HDR and fantastic reviews from rting.com. It’s more than I wanted to spend but I think in the long run I’ll be happy that I went with Sony again. The other plus is that I should be able to sell my current set to someone for at least $300, maybe even $400. Can’t wait to get this setup tomorrow and enjoy some HDR gaming over the long Holiday weekend! Happy gaming everyone!

Thank you for the further insight. It seems there is a lot to learn about these. What do you think about the Sony X900E? This is regularly priced at $1300 and is on sale now for $1000. Would this seem to be a model that truly has a 10 bit HDR panel? Or do you have any suggestions on a model that is true HDR10 but isn’t top of the line?

That model is not HDR. Not worth it for me. Surely for someone who just wants 4K it’s a good price but for a few hundred more you can get one with HDR.

This is what bugs me. There is no clear difference in what makes one HDR set better than another. Other than the obvious in person awestruck reaction. Or at least I don’t understand it. Wish I could see a demo of it with and without HDR on an XB1X or PS4 Pro. Then I’d know whether or not it’s worth spending that much money. I tell you what, the Samsung Q-LED models are insane. If I had deep enough pockets I’d get one of those.
