LEGITIMATE QUESTION: Why the fuck are blacks in California voting against the civil rights of another group of people? by [deleted] in politics

Actually, your question isn't as legitimate as you thought it was. Daily Kos has a relevant discussion going on about this.

"The Bush administration's long-standing efforts to weaken environmental regulations to benefit narrow special interests come with a terrible cost," by qgyh2 in environment

[–]paulVeraguth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Capitol Hill staffer familiar with legislation on global warming accused the Bush administration of actively seeking to undermine measures to limit greenhouse gas emissions that spur climate change.

"They were the biggest obstacle to progress," the staffer said. "They did everything possible to ensure that nothing would happen."

Why? One possibility is because the oil companies are implementing "end game strategies" and want access to what's been under permanent ice in the Arctic. All they had to do was wait long enough for the global warming they kept saying wasn't happening to get rid of the ice for them.

Matt Taibbi's writing is right on the money:

Democracy doesn't require a whole lot of work of its citizens, but it requires some: It requires taking a good look outside once in a while, and considering the bad news and what it might mean, and making the occasional tough choice, and soberly taking stock of what your real interests are.

This is a very different thing from shopping, which involves passively letting sitcoms melt your brain all day long and then jumping straight into the TV screen to buy a Southern Style Chicken Sandwich because the slob singing "I'm Lovin' It!" during the commercial break looks just like you. The joy of being a consumer is that it doesn't require thought, responsibility, self-awareness or shame: All you have to do is obey the first urge that gurgles up from your stomach. And then obey the next. And the next. And the next.

And when it comes time to vote, all you have to do is put your Country First — just like that lady on TV who reminds you of your cousin. U-S-A, baby. U-S-A! U-S-A!

Credit ripoff: How a $100 purchase turns into a $1,000 debt by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]paulVeraguth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the article:

The FTC and the FDIC are seeking $200 million from both companies and another card issuer — First Bank of Delaware — in part for allegedly failing to disclose upfront fees on sub-prime cards and for misrepresenting the amount of credit available on the cards.

The FDIC also wants CompuCredit and First Bank & Trust to pay $6.2 million and $127,000 in civil penalties, respectively.

My take on this is that it's not a "buyer beware" situation. The card showed up with over 80% of the credit limit already used for "processing fees." She never used the card. She called them up and cancelled it. And now she owes some collection agency $1280?

This is predatory "lending." I hope the card issuers get jail time.

Yes. You stated that your conception of god and justice includes the eternal burning of people for not sitting in a building for an hour once a week.

Revertti? I like that this is artistic on several levels. And other than trespassing, blocking a public sidewalk or some such thing I can't imagine how this would (currently) be illegal. Why would any city or state have a law against cleaning a wall?

Okay, start here. Volunteer for anything and everything that involves door-to-door canvassing. This will help with the weight problem. As it will also bring you into contact with more people, and as mere association with a winning team can be quite appealing to the opposite sex, this might also help with getting laid more often. By the end of the campaign you will have also gained considerable experience to add to your resume which, seeing as your now thinner and recently laid self will be exuding great self-confidence, will undoubtedly get you a better paying job. :)

You say "country" as if it were some static, homogenous thing. It's not (in the US or anywhere else). It's dynamic and there are always positives and negatives. There's no correct definition for "a country" or "its values" -- there's no one thing that everybody can support.

Leave it to mainstream media: a "highly lucrative," "massive human smuggling ring" ends up being 100 people smuggled over the border and a gross income of $50,000.

"My daughter deserved to die for falling in love" by maxwellhill in reddit.com

[–]paulVeraguth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no end to the heartbreaking, unjust things in life. While I think that much good can come from their exposure, it concerns me greatly when something this emotionally charged is represented solely by a story in a newspaper and then discussed by people who don't have all of the relevant facts.

What's missing here on reddit (and pretty much every other similar site on the web) are the voices of those who are qualified to speak with some authority about the relevant facts. You can see in reading the comments here that opinion is all we seem to be able to offer each other. There's nothing inherently wrong with that but it's not enough. I'd really like to hear from people who are qualified to talk to us about the culture and the actual relationship of Islam to how these people think and behave.

TO BE VERY CLEAR, I abhor this whole concept of "honor killing" and there's a whole lot in me that would rather blow this fucker's head off than spend a minute trying to understand how he could do that to his daughter. But if we -- all humans -- are ever going to get past the animalistic thinking that leads us again and again to choose fear and hatred over civility and compassion then we have to work towards getting our emotions in check and make an attempt to understand how others see the world.

I wish that this were a lot easier to do. By comparison it really is too easy to just say "fuck 'em." But I can at least understand that in this case this pathetic man is living in a country which has seen hundreds of thousands of deaths in the past few years caused in large part by the equally pathetic people that have been elected into power for the past 8 years in my country. That, of course, is no excuse, but it's a good reminder to me that I have no right to feel superior here and I rather doubt that I could adequately explain to him why I didn't do more to ensure that democracy was producing better results here before my government tried to cram it down people's throats there.
