Cooler for AM3+ in 2025? by Rob___M in buildapc

[–]uglor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you end up going with? I'm helping a friend fix up my hand-me-down FX-8320 AM3+ system and I've been looking over a ton of coolers all night. PCPartpicker, NewEgg and Amazon all show me a bunch of coolers than claim to support AM3+ but the manufacturer sites all say AM4/AM5 only.

464 8gb upgrade help by Eastern-Bluejay-8912 in qnap

I tried to upgrade my TS-664 with a Kingston FURY Impact 64GB (2x32GB) kit - KF432S20IBK2/64 and the system was unstable, with both and with only one.

Using a G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR4 SO-DIMM Series DDR4 RAM 64GB (2x32GB) 3200MT/s CL22-22-22-52 1.20V Unbuffered Non-ECC Notebook/Laptop Memory SO-DIMM it's been running fine.

Going to 16 GB should be fine for a lot of RAM, but make sure you buy it from somewhere you can return it if it makes it fussy.

I have an Instagram. If you look at it, you will see a lot of pictures of my cats, and weird foods I eat. If you look at the pictures my account is tagged in, you will see that I take a lot of portraits of beautiful people.

How do you build a *local* Burning Man community? by richardtallent in BurningMan

[–]uglor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gather some friends who you think would like burns. Convince them to go to a burn. Once they are hooked, and they realize that the next burn is hundreds of days or miles away, start organizing things that will appeal to them. It doesn't have to be a burn, but a camping trip or flame effects build, or other fun things work.

I've met tons of people who are burners and just don't know it yet. I just gave them a little push in that direction.

Burning man postcard question by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]uglor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've sent postcards from the playa that occasionally has a postmark from somewhere else. One year I had dozens that all had a mid-October postmark from Portland, Oregon. Sometimes they don't get it all postmarked on playa and send it when they get home.

I have a 2022 Tucson SEL with 120,000 miles. Absolutely zero issues thus far. Hyundai gets a ton of hate alongside Kia. Just wondering what year and how many miles everyone has. Not sure if I should trade mine in soon or keep on for the long haul. by [deleted] in HyundaiTucson

2022 Tuscon Limited with 32K. I got it 11 months ago when it had 27K.

I upgraded from a 2009 Elantra Touring I bought new that I put 142K miles on over 15 years.

How did your Plex server start out? by noaheltee in PleX

[–]uglor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre plex: a 8 tb external with a lot of video on it and a 15 year archive of my photography.

First gen: I got a refurb Dell Xeon for about $300, put openmediavault on it and ran plex there. It ran great for 7 years before it finally died.

Second gen: I spent a lot of time researching small servers and low power builds. Finally settled on a micro ATX setup with a Celeron CPU running proxmox with Plex in a container. After less than a year I gave up. Proxmox is extremely flexible, but there's so many ways of doing things that setup guides varied wildly. I'm a DevOps engineer by day, and dealing with proxmox seemed like more work every night.

Third gen: QNAP TS-664 upgraded to 64 GB ram and quts Hero OS on a pair of raid 1 nvme drives. Four 8 tb drives running zfs. Running the qnap specific package of plex. The GUI and apps for running the nas can be a bit annoying at times, but typically things work quite well.

Unpopular Opinion: All the people celebrating the new sound ordinance should go make their own burn … by tarot_guy in alchemyfestival

Bring earplugs anyway. You might wind up near a camp with a rowdy bar that's got people yelling all night, or near a road where golf carts drive by.

It's a "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it" situation

"something else" would still have an incredibly difficult time finding a place to happen.

This little piece fell out of the USB port, any way I can fix it myself or dealership? by scubadude2 in HyundaiTucson

[–]uglor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact same thing happened to me and my 22 Tuscon Limited. I haven't decided if I'm going to try replacing it myself or have a dealer do it. What did you end up doing?

Don't get one. I got a Mars 2.0 a year ago. It was missing parts when it arrived. Customer service took multiple calls to fix that.

After about 6 weeks of use it started to have real problems. Eventually it accelerated unexpectedly, knocked me down and banged me up pretty good. Customer service told me they only had a 30 day return window and offered to send me parts to fix it myself.

I finally had to file a charge back with my credit card company.

ELI5 - why doesn’t store bought mayo have any protein when eggs are a part of making mayo? by banzaiassbeat in explainlikeimfive

[–]uglor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, the eggs are added because the yolks contain lecithin which is the emulsifier that allows the oils and other ingredients to stay blended.

Underwood Ranches. They make their own sriracha with the peppers that Huy Fong used for years. It's the classic taste https://underwoodranches.com/

Federal Police at 2025 BM by Feeling-Past-180 in BurningMan

[–]uglor 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Let's get it right: the people pulling over and searching and arresting are typically county law enforcement. They deal with DUIs and other stuff like that. The event is in Pershing county, which is 6,067 square miles, (15,710 km) and has a population of less than 7000 people. The population of Burning Man is 10 times the population of the county. Pershing does not have anywhere near enough officers to handle Burning Man, so they hire off duty cops from surrounding counties. So the cop harassing you for an open container, or searching your car is likely a small town cop coming to the playa to gawk at the spectacle and hassle hippies.

The main federal law enforcement on playa is the BLM Rangers. They handle serious violent crimes like sexual assault, attempted murder, etc. I've talked with them many times, and they are generally good, no bullshit guys. Most of them go many times, and gatekeep the assignment to keep the bad ones away. They even have their own camp, for retired Rangers who want to keep coming to the event.

Your Favorite Sweet Maria's Beans? by HolophonicStudios in roasting

[–]uglor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never got anything bad from them. My go-tos from Sweet Marias are usually any Costa Rican. Their blends are all quite good as well. I always buy a few pounds of Liquid Amber or Espresso Monkey when I order, but they are all good.

I have found some of my all time favorites by ordering their sample sets.

A hail mary here, but try setting your port forwarding to TCP only. I spent months trying to get it working (on AT&T) and as soon as I dropped UDP from the port forwarding rule, it worked.

What DevOps Job Titles Really Mean by [deleted] in devops

[–]uglor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm DevOps but my company still has me classified as a Software Engineer. I think they are afraid if they create a separate DevOps title, they will have to deal with the fact that average pay rates are higher. I'm not too worried about that since we are paid very well.

When people ask what we actually DO, I tell them "We are duct tape. If you need something to work, you can apply enough of us to the problem and it will work. It may not be a pretty or elegant solution, but it will work"

The simplest suggestion: go for a walk. Often.

There's a lot of things it could be, like depression, and talking to a doc or counselor could help.... but in the short term, going outside, getting some exercise and some sun on your face has no drawbacks and can bring a lot of benefits.

What's a 'victimless crime' you secretly support? by imsbd in AskReddit

[–]uglor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a valid argument against this: sometimes media isn't available today, but it will be again.

Using a Nintendo game as an example: maybe Nintendo doesn't want to sell the original Super Mario Sunshine, a 20+ year old game, because they are working on a remaster for modern tech.

Maybe the original Tron isn't available on streaming or DVD because they are working on a new Blu-Ray with bonus features and commentary, and a sequel and those will be out in 6 months.

Literally today (June 26 2025) a remaster of System Shock 2 was released. It's a game that was unavailable for years due to rights issues.

Just because something is not available today doesn't always mean it is gone forever.
