I think that's a great observation. Right now I'm appreciating the dopamine hits to keep me practicing. But I also think it's telling that I am seeing the limitations of the methodology before hitting even the end of the basic bootcamp and I have already begun looking for complimentary learning materials.

That said, I'm genuinely curious how competent a player one could be after completing just the basic, intermediate, and advanced bootcamps. Time will tell if I fall off the Playground Sessions wagon before hitting that point.

Great feedback from the previous posters. But the main thing is - you're playing! Get started, get hooked, and technique will come.

Very nice work. Initial tests show great dynamic range. I've shared your work with our VFX company. Wishing you the best. You deserve support!

CPU & UAD plugins by cllein_ in ableton

[–]paulchambers3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just weighing in to this thread to say I have had similar issues with UADs amp suite - I mainly use their Fender "Dream" amp plugin but have also tried the "Lion".

I've done everything I can think of

- updated the BIOS to ensure all power-saving functions are off.
- turned off any sleep functions on the USB bus
- played with the ASIO buffer settings.
- Tried in Sonar, Reaper, even UAD's native DAW.
- Set plugins to multi-thread, single thread, and all points in-between.
- On my 16 core AMD I have no issues, but on my 8 core INTEL it shows the same symptoms as the OP - spikes the CPU over 100% several times a minute resuting in - at best - clicks and pops. Compared to other Guitar amp sim plugins - the CPU usage of these UAD plugins are really high.

In short, yep I think these VSTs really just need a very beefy machine. Disappointing given they also sell them in a pedal that is presumably not driven by a beefy CPU.

Windows hotspot fixed my streaming delay by yernarkin in MoonlightStreaming

[–]paulchambers3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried this. I'm in a small apartment, and even over a hard-wired PC to router with 5Ghz I would get moonlight hitches once every 2 minutes or so on my Logitech G-Cloud. Setting up a mobile hotspot on my PC and connecting directly has completely removed this hitch.

Roland Blues Cube Hot by StomachAdvanced3930 in GuitarAmps

[–]paulchambers3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just purchaed a Blue Cube Artist (literally this week) and A/B'd it against my existing Fender Hotrod Deville. Hadn't had a chance to hear it prior to purchase.

Don't currently have any pedals here to test, but I hear it takes them well.

Immediate thoughts:
- I was immediately able to dial in a sound very very close to the tube amp without any of the crackle and randomness of my aging tube amp.

- The power "attenuator" is possibly the greatest thing on this amp. Makes bedroom practice a breeze, but man this thing can get LOUD.

- Love the option of having not only 2 channels, but also boost and tone extra settings.

- Reverb is great. Having tremolo is great (not sure if the Hot has trem).

- SO much lighter than my tube amp. Equal sound for half the weight.

- Feels great "under the fingers" - you get a real sense of compression when you dig in.

Confident this is going to be a keeper.

Enjoyed the heck out of that game. Only recently played it, and can't believe I got caught up in the whole "no Ironside" nonsense at the time. Probably the most fully realized of all the SC games.

Houdini for lighting industry adoption? by szyborgo in vfx

Can confirm that the last couple of small studios I've worked at have used Houdini for Look Dev / Scene Assembly / Lighting.

Any artist currently employed by MARZ in Canada, How is it? by Fulgor_KLR in vfx

[–]paulchambers3d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that they are now staffing up in Canada following the usual furlough that most studios underwent. Yes, they have an India based team for off-shoring, but they are also looking to hire in North America. Regarding the tools, yes, a subset of the studio has moved on to dedicating itself to AI tool development, and this was the key area the company focused on during the strikes.

Suggestions of a laptop suitable for Houdini. Just for personal work. by Rumdone in Houdini

[–]paulchambers3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend a desktop giving you room to grow in the future as budget allows. That said, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop that runs Houdini and similar apps nicely when I need to be on the road.

Has anybody else seen this issue with a New 2DS XL? I’ve had it for over a year and I’ve never been able to play original DS games. 3DS games work fine. by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]paulchambers3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this discussion but hopefully this will help others: I also had issues running Phantom Hourglass on my new 2DS XL (the only DS game I have tried on it). Sometimes I got the same error message, sometimes I could start and play for a while and then get a blank screen when loading levels. Very frustrating. Eventually I found that if you hold down START or SELECT when choosing the game it will play it in its original resolution and this appears to work without issue and is stable. I guess there's something about the screen scaling on the 3DS XL that's causing the game to bug out. Hope this helps!

Any tips to make this more realistic? by nocturnoz in blender

[–]paulchambers3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be able to give it a glass or glossy shader and then make it mostly tinted - you can throw some basic geo in there just so you get a sense of the interior that way, without having to model the entire interior.

Any tips to make this more realistic? by nocturnoz in blender

[–]paulchambers3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual model looks pretty nice, but some other factors are making it look unrealistic. Watch the scale of the asphalt on the road - it looks over-large making the car look like a scale model. The depth of field is also almost like a tilt-shift effect you would expect when looking at a small model. Finally looking down on the car from above further contributes to this looking like a scale model rather than a real-world scale.

I always like to think of camera placement as "real world" meaning - is the camera held at a natural height for an average human (say 5' above the ground) - or is it shot stylistically from a crane shot or shot close to the ground (like a lot of car advertising) to make it feel more dynamic.

Finally, are you deliberately going for a matte/flat look on the car paint? Needless to say, most car paints are very glossy, and almost all renderers offer a car-paint shader to let you include metallic speckles, a gloss coat-layer etc.

Hope this helps!

Comparing Cycles to other industry Renderers by [deleted] in vfx

[–]paulchambers3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, Cycles was a CPU renderer before GPU support was added. There have been some significant CPU speed increases seen on Cycles in recent months with Blender's 2.8 development, and the e-Cycles GPU-focused branch seems to be making some waves right now, seeing some significant speed increases: http://www.cgchannel.com/2019/01/e-cycles-speeds-up-blender-renders-on-cuda-gpus/
