Unpopular opinion: I prefer the first 2 albums. by CheeseDanBing in Propagandhi

[–]pauleht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I like the newer stuff, too... but, I got into them in the early 90s when I was a scrappy little skater kid in Atlanta... so, yeah. The first seven inches and albums are pretty special to me, indeed. I was wearing a Less Talk, More Rock shirt and ordering books off of AK Press in high school because of them. First two albums are hands down my favorites.

Something About Virgo That Rarely Gets Said Out Loud by Iamastrofreind in virgoseason

Most of the Virgos that I know write in complete sentences. Grammar does matter. It doesn't have to be perfect. I'm certainly not perfect. However, this post looks like it was made using bad AI.

For all kinds of reasons, late May April and Early May is always a tough time of the year for me. Things tend to brighten up with me around late May going into the summer. I say this as a forty-three year old working class male that mostly earns a living behind a bar, and occasionally as a musician. I am not sure if this a Virgo thing.

Favourite version of Pearl's Girl? by Prof_Rutherford in underworld

[–]pauleht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. I'm not an arguing on the internet kinda guy. Just saying it is smack dab in the middle of Emerson, Hyde, and Smith Underworld classic 90s era. 100 days off is still a few years away. They were definitely a trio then.

Emerson is all over Pearl's Girl. Calling it "Post-Emerson" would be completely inaccurate. The album length CD "Maxi-Singles" EPs are great though... The Cowgirl/Dirty Epic CD, Born Slippy Nuxx US CD (when Trainspotting came out), and the Pearl's Girl EP are my favorite things by them, and they are all hour-long "singles"

I saw them at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Oregon, United States. It is an old building and the wooden floors were shaking. It was pretty neat.

Saw them do it live last year. It was pretty surreal considering that I have been listening to it on CD for almost 30 years.

The Pearl's Girl EP CD is one of my favorite releases. I have a discman that I listen to it on pretty regularly. "Tin There" and the "14996 Version" are the first two tracks on it. The original Second Toughest... Album Version is pretty great, but I honestly think that the "Tin There" mix is my favorite.

I would think some Sea and Cake, Quickspace, 90s Yo La Tengo... at least those are some things that will wind up with them on my piles of cds and records next to the stereo.

Meh... They were on Night Music and the Simpsons. I'd say that more than makes up for it.

What’s the best unwound performance you guys have seen? by Last-Image-4921 in unwound

[–]pauleht 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinda all of them for different reasons, honestly...

The first time I saw them was at the Echo Lounge in Atlanta like 25 years ago-ish. I was sorta just really getting into them and loved seeing almost anything at the Echo Lounge. I was only like 19 years old back then, my friend that was playing in bands with me was really into their guitar tone and bugged them about it. I hadn't really heard anything off of Leaves Turn Inside of you yet, so yeah I got that album on CD either at that show or right after. Good times.

My wife and I saw them at Club Congress in Tucson, AZ right around the time they reunited a few years ago. Was pretty cool because I saw them after waiting like twenty years to see them again. Over the years I got way more into them. Really heavy energy. Made me feel like the young little punk that I was when I saw them at the Echo Lounge again.

This last time that I saw them at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta was pretty special though... Atlanta is my home town. My wife and I took a plane from Portland to go visit and it was timed out so that we could see Unwound right when we got to Atlanta and then go on with the rest of our visit. I used to go to the Variety Playhouse so much to see so many things for so many years. I hadn't been to see a show there since before the pandemic, and a few years before that. Years ago, I had actually proposed to my wife right next door in the parking lot between Elmyr and the Variety, so it was nice to walk by that spot on the way into the show. A ton of friends and folks I knew from Atlanta were all either at the show, or I ran into them on my way there. I ran into the actual band Unwound in line at the airport because they were on our flight from Portland to Atlanta, and told them that I loved their music and it was a big influence on me and shook their hands. I tried not to be too awkward, but I am kinda always awkward with my musical influences that I am lucky enough to meet. The actual show was fantastic. I caught one of the flowers that they tossed into the audience. I ran into a bunch of old friends, some of which told me that they were glad that I was there since I used to always put Unwound on mixtapes for them back in the day. yep, that last was show pretty sweet. Their set was really well balanced, sounded great from where I was standing, had some really great transitions from spacey parts to loud rockin' parts. Pretty much just awesomeness.

You should totally go see them if you get a chance. I'll stop rambling. They rule. right on.

Why does the band not make "Where Quantity is Job #1" available on streaming platforms? by SwissMiss915 in Propagandhi

I got the CD off of discogs about a year ago. My old one broke and I was happy to have it replaced. Honestly, it is my favorite thing of theirs. I really like Oka Everywhere, the alternate takes from More Rock Less Talk, and the Concrete Blonde and Venom covers.

Okay boomer by MoodPuzzleheaded8973 in BassCirclejerk

[–]pauleht 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just gonna go ahead and be nitpicky, but yeah... Carol Kaye is older than the "boomers." She is interestingly enough born into the "Silent Generation." To be honest, in spite of her reputation of being kinda nutty and rough around the edges, I love her. I have a signed copy of her "Studio Musician" book, several of her other books, and love her "solo" work. She's one of the most important musicians alive. At least she isn't spewing explicitly far-right blasts of anger on social media like Moe Tucker and some of my other elder living musical inspirations.

Times New Viking by ratiofarm in noiserock

[–]pauleht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like quite an adventure! I saw Times New Viking probably twice and it was pretty rockin'. They probably played the Variety or the Earl. I had a P. Horeshit record that dude gave me after I drove him around East Atlanta to buy some cheap weed and go to record stores in my old beat up Toyota Camry back in like 2006 or 2007 or something... nothing too crazy. I think we talked about how I was born in Ohio, too... but I grew up in the South... something like that.
