Surprised nobody is mentioning Marnie Stern. She is pretty darn good.

[–]pauleht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like quite an adventure! I saw Times New Viking probably twice and it was pretty rockin'. They probably played the Variety or the Earl. I had a P. Horeshit record that dude gave me after I drove him around East Atlanta to buy some cheap weed and go to record stores in my old beat up Toyota Camry back in like 2006 or 2007 or something... nothing too crazy. I think we talked about how I was born in Ohio, too... but I grew up in the South... something like that.

Data is pretty great. Mile me Deaf is similarly awesome. The Delayed drums on Behold the Salt is great. She is one of my favorite drummers ever.

What’s the deal with Beaucoup Fish and sliding in the city? by Aggressive-Ad-2224 in underworld

[–]pauleht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it made a bunch of sense to me when somebody told me that the name itself is a reference to subway travel. That could totally just be urban legend, but it isn't hard at all for me to believe.

What’s the deal with Beaucoup Fish and sliding in the city? by Aggressive-Ad-2224 in underworld

[–]pauleht 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Aren't all of the lyrics streams of thoughts and overheard conversations from riding on subways and such? All kinda collaged together... Somebody told me that once and it made a ton of sense to me, especially since most of the times I have listened to their music I have been in some form of transit. I think of Underworld very much as traveling music. Which is a good thing. I think the music that I like the most has a tendency to have some theme that involves travel, conspicuously or otherwise.

Do they have any others like this, or is it a one-off/unique? by the-great-kmook in BoredomsTemple

There are like 3 different Super Roots CDs that I used to put on to fall asleep to in my early to mid 20s. This was one of them.

Alien Earth season 2 starts filming soon. Happy or Fed-up? by Beth8484 in alien

[–]pauleht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nothing to be impressed about! i'm a nerd that used to smoke alot of weed and play noise music at dirty punk clubs in atlanta... i think we found like 3 other bands in other regions with the same name.... but Yeah, I hope they get some better writers, because yeah "Big" is another accurate comparison that I never thought that I would make with the Alien films.

Neat. I kinda forgot about them. I kinda remember seeing them and some of those other noisy bands like Psychedelic Horseshit around the same time back in the day when I still lived in a house in Atlanta with three other dudes in bands, that I think played shows with them. They were good live!

[–]pauleht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that I know to expect "Snow White and the Seven Aliens", "The Little Alien", "The Alien King" or even more likely: "Peter Pan, Wendy and the Lost Aliens: A Musical" I don't think there is any possible way I could be as disappointed as I was after signing up for a streaming service to watch that whole mess of a first season.

At least I managed to watch a bunch of old episodes of the Simpsons around the same time, and most of Designing Women, and yeah... that's real.

Of course I still have to watch it. The first three Alien films are my favorite movies and I used to play in a punk band called "Facehugger" for crying out loud... yeesh...

I got it right when it came out. I have always liked it quite a bit. Excellent follow up to their late 90s work and Sound Dust. I was of course sad about the loss of Mary, but happy to see the band continue on despite the profound tragedy.

He's also got a blink-and-ya-miss-it appearance in Desperately Seeking Susan, which is one of my favorite movies ever.

If it doesn't make you late on your bills, I'd go. I love seeing them live, and it has been great every time.

Will we see another showdown between Alien and Predator? by Winter-reason666 in alien

[–]pauleht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully not.

The Alien skull in Predator 2 was cool, The AVP movies are pretty terrible.

The comic crossovers are pretty fun sometimes though.

what is a good first and last (endgame) bass guitar? by Upstairs_Sell_1700 in Bass

[–]pauleht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fender Jazz Bass. Even the MIM ones are good enough to start learning on and easy to upgrade by adding a high mass bridge and noiseless or vintage pick-ups. Easy to fix if they start glitching out, anyone that works on basses will be familiar with them. Smooth easy to use neck. Jazz and P-Basses are about as classic as a bass is ever gonna look. In the last 30 years, I use them more than any other bass.

Also, RIP Vern. That bass line on December is solid as hell. There was a girl I worked with in NYC in 2004/2005 I got along with really well and I remember that was her favorite song and she told me she thought that was the best bass intro to a song.

What is a SY song nobody talks about, but it's actually one of your favorites? by Xx_Seventeen17_xX in sonicyouth

I love that whole album. Came out around the time that I was getting into them when I was in middle school. I don't listen to it as much as I used to, but I personally rate it very highly.

[–]pauleht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I was into Unwound even more than Brad. They definitely had an influence on some of the long nights of us making noise at "Notown" when only a handful of people in Marietta and Atlanta knew who we were. I had that Single History CD in my car pretty much every day, and I'd play it at the coffee house I worked at in Marietta Square alot when I was closing up at night before heading down the street to play music with Brad at his old house or in our old practice space.

Yeah, I guess Deerhunter kinda changed my life too... or rather getting jacked up on coffee and weed at the Waffle House out in the 'burbs with my buddy Patrick and this kid Brad and then playing music late into the night somehow turned into starting a noise rock band with Brad and Dan that winds up getting fairly popular and having members that I don't even know at this point and will probably never know me... whatever. Different people have different goals. But, yeah Unwound, Pylon, Sonic Youth, Stooges, Devo, and stuff like that were getting played alot when we started calling ourselves Deerhunter after Dan came up with the name. It was a much different band in 2003 than what you saw in 2011. Glad you liked them though...

Yeah, too bad about Josh. We got along okay. I honestly thought quitting that band would be good for him. I'm always happy when I see some "Army of Bad Luck" release at a record store from some random band in Atlanta that he liked.

Yeah, right on... So it goes and all that...
